MONDAY. MARCH! 13, 1S93.
A BILLON DOLLAR CONGRESS. The appropriations of the 51st Congress $988,117,183. The Democrats deuounced this as a Billion Dollar Cougress. The appropriations of the 52d Congress nmonutto SI.020,822,019. These figures show the hypocrisy of Democratic denunciation of the Republican Congress, for Republican figures are exceeded by nearly thirty million dollars. This is the record upon which the party pledged to retrenchment and reform must go to the oonntn It is not claimed that there has been undue extravagance on the part of this Congress. The appropriations were necessary for the support of a prosperous anil growing Government, and the Republicans recognize that fact, while on the other hand, the Democrats, having cried extravugance, were compelled to cripplo every branch in order to reduce thy total below that of the amount of tho appropriations of their predecessors. It should also be remembered thnt when the Fifty-first Congress met it received as a legacy from the Democratic Congress of the year before a deficiency for which it was compelled to provide, amounting to S38,G1T,-148.0(, of which sum S'25,321.007.35 WHS for pensions alone. That is one way the Democrats have of showing their friendship for tho old soldier.
FOR the sixteen months ending August 31, 1891, prior to the ratification of the reciprocity treaty, says the New York Mail and Express, the imports of merchandise into this country from Cuba amounted to 889.551,021 our experts to Cuba amounted to §15,880,33"). For'the sixteen months ending December 31, 1892, under Republican reciprocity, the value of the imports was £93,171,4:71 the value of our exports was $28,869,2(53. The total increase of trade, under this Republican measure, was 816,599,758, of which 53,010,S50 was in imports, and $12,982,908 was in exports. Cuba offers one inetauce of tho benefits of reciprocity. There are many more.
THE 'Washington correspondent of the Terre Haute Express called upon Senator Yoorhees to ask his opinion of tho report that President Cleveland had determined to suspend the order issued by President Harrison extending the civil service law to the exployes of all free delivery postoffices. The Senator said he had heard nothing of such a report and was not prepared to express an opinion upon a matter of which ho knew nothing. The Senator said, more over, he did not believe the President intends to suspend the order. Si far as he can learn there is no good authority for the report.
Tnu Governor of Washington has appointed Hon. John B. Allen as United States Senator from that State to succeed himself. As the Legislature was in session when the vacany occurred the Governor's right to appoint is qces tioned. The Governors of Wyoming and Montana haye made similar up pointmenta and their right to do so ha^ been challenged by the Senate.
DAVID DIVINE has in his possession a copy of the Wabash Courier of the date of April 12, 1838, a paper published at Terre Haute, by J. and L. DowliDg. It is principally taken up by a speech ae livered by Henry Clay in the Senate February 19, 1838, against the subtreasury bill. The paper is yellow with age.
THE moBt contemptible thing done by the late lamented Legislature was to legislate Judge Friedly, of Jefferson county, out of olllce at the demand of Stale Liquor League, because he had enforced the liquor law in his circuit Tnis dirty job was put through by the njtorious Sim Coy.
AFTER all it seems the tariff question is to lie relegated to the rear. How to reduce the tariff without hurting our industries and at the same time raise more revenue is one of the problems that puzzles tho Democrats.
DEMOCRATIC rule has put Now Jersey in the power of gamblers and blacklegs. Is has done the same thing in this State by refusing to wipe out the Roby race track.
A OroBs Complaint.
Amos J. Surface, who has been sued by his wife, Lorena E. Surface, for a divorce, denies everything which she alleges in her complaint against him He sayB on the contrary that so long as they lived together he provided for her in tho most liberal manner, and instebd ot absenting himself she was the guilty party. In his cross complaint he will Bet out some things that will make her wince.

fun From Becinnins: to Eud.
l,Mr.
Wilkinson's Widows," Mr. Gil-
lotto'6 new farce, kept large audience in a state of almost uninterrupted mirth at Proctor's Theatre last evening. The persons who witnessed this first performance will undoubtedly talk a great ideal about the curious ending of the play, and undoubtedly the author had in mind the creation of public discussion when he devised the termination. The farce ends with the only real mystery in it—unexplained. More than that, it is impossible to give it any rational explanation. This fact will be known before to uight- to all those who are familiar with what goes on in this iic:ivocity therefore it will be discounted, as the gentlemen of Wall street say.
For "Mr. Wilkinson's Widows" is funny from beginning to end. Its mirth is good genuine farce fun, always a tritle exaggerated aud depending for its effect on the serious attitude of the actors. The situations are ludicrous in the extreme, and they are heaped up in a bounteous profusion. At Music Hall Wednesday, March 15.
