With The Daao.

Mr. Edwin II. Carroll's role of Old Sponge, the tramp, in The Dago, is one of the most wonderful, yet natural combinations of mirth, pathos, cliuracterand song, it has ever been the good fortune of a dramatist to create, and though a difiicult part, Mr. Carroll is said to be fully capable of all its requirements. The ups and downs of the elevator boy dwindle into microscopic insignificance when compared with those of Old Sponge.—Preu Notice.

COLLEGE NOTES"

Candidates for oratorical honors are not blossoming very faBt. Dr. CunuingLmm is getting great work from bis students and has introduced the feature of debates among the Juniors and Seniors. To-morrow the suspension of foreign immigration will bo discussed.

The now rules tind regulations have worked wonders in regard to attendance. At the end of the first week there were two atibences from chapel, one from church and none from recitations. All three were excused. This for zero weather is fair. IX

TIIK PHYSICAL lMIlKCTOH. 5,

Tt now seems a certainty that E. G. llorton, '91, of Cornell, will be the new ihysical director of Wabush College. Mr. Horton is now tutor of mathematics in a Detroit academy and besides bting a scholar is a trained athlete. He was half back on the Cornell football team and captain of his

He is a thorough paced chap and will prove a general favorite besides requirng good work.

That Donation.

To tlio Editor tlio Journal, A good deal has been said recently regarding a donation made by our County Commissioners to Wabash College. This oollege, ns I understand, is a sectarian institution. Now other denominations have their institutions ot learning all over this country whioh they naturally and rightly feel under obligations to assist but they do not fancy being taxed to help this one, especially without consultation, as neither do a vast majority of the members of that church.

Those who desire to donate to the college let them do so by all means, but you seem to think we owe it a donation for having lived and spent its money among us for

eo

long. You had as well

take the same view of every substantial old citizen in the county. See how ridiculous is your statement? Yon spoke of a petition being circulated, but I nor any one with whom I have talked ever saw it at all, or even heard of it until it was all over.

Very many of the people of this county have all the burdens they can possibly bear already and bitterly remonstrate against being oompelled to pay their hard earned money, so badly needed at home, over to a rich institution that is all the time receiving vast anms by voluntary donation—why it received a large sum just a few days ago. Ot all that I have heard speak of the action of the County Commissioners all are strongly opposed to it but two persons, and they are high headed Presbyterians.

About all the college seems to develope is an inferior football team any way. It is nothing but football, football, football, team, team, team! And all the teams put together wouldn't be equal to one Rocky Mountain burro, to wit:—a diminutive jaokaas. People of this county don't tancy being taxed todevelope football teams in the form of little, long-eare Spanish jacks, and the projectors and accomplishes of the scheme which is equally as unpopular as it is unjust and tyrunnical, will very likely wake up to a bitter realization of the fact. Respectfully,

A WILLIE WHITFOKDrSLETTER.

He Describes Some of the Things to be Seen In the "Glorious Olimate of California." Special to The Journal.

Valona,

Contra Costa county, Cal.,

Jan. 11, 1893,—I snia in my previous letter I would write about California. When I arrived at Oakland it was night so I could not see how it looked. However, next morning I had plenty of time to look around. There were several thiDgs I noticed especially. There are hardly any brick buildings, and there are no brick sidewalks the sidewalks are of made stone. Another thing is that almost every yard has a palm tree in it. Oakland has more palm trees in it than any place I have yet seen. They are planted along tte sidewalks instead of shade trees. It also abounds in live oak trees, from which it is named. We took the train for San Francisco that afternoon. It takes the ferry boat about half an hour to

ciosb

the bay. San

Francisco is the greatest place for coastng down hill that ever 1 saw it is used for that purpose by all the boys who have a wagon. Whenever a boy can get a pair of roller skates, or even one, he has a fine time. All he has to do, if he knows bow to balance himself, is to get on the top of a hill, get in a good position and let himself go. He goes Hying, for the sidewalks ure very smooth and slanting. It is a wonder that some persons are not killed, but that never happens. The boys 6eem to know their business. I went to Chinatown one day and saw more Chinamen than I ever saw before or ever expect to see, unless I go again. There are tall Chinamen, short Chinamen, lean Chinamen, and fat Chinamen Chinese women, boys, girls aad babies. The last three named are funny looking creatures, especially the babies, who are very cute. All the men have long queues hanging down to about a foot from- the ground. They tia them up only when at work. Nobody knows how many different names they have till they come here. There are only two names that I have heard worth mentioning, "You Fat" ana "Gee Wo." They are the best I have Been yet. The Chinese live here just as they live in China. They are very useful here for all kinds of labor. They go all over the country with big baskets carried on a pole across their shoulders. The basbets are generally filled with all kinds of things to eat. They are useful to such a degree that 1 think the people will be 6orry when they are all gone, that they ever passed a law against them. While I was in San Francisco I went to see the new war ship, "Olympla" launched. There were a number of boys on a lot of chained logs close to tlio shore. When the ship was launched the swell took the logs far out. It they had not come baok in a little while they would have been badly loft. You should have heard the crowd shout when they went out. The OlyLipia is the largest war ship on the coast, though not so heavy as the "Monterey." You can imagine the effect upon me, who had never seen a Bhip worth mentioning before. The next place to which I went was San Rafael, which was the prettiest place I had yet seen. The only drawback was fleas. However, fleas are common in all California. There are none of them in Valona, I have found out, for which I am duly thankful. Nevertheless I had a good time trying to o.itch lizzards, that is, trying to catch them. They live in crevices in the rocks and under stones. When you raise tlio stone they run

bo

ear and throat, diseases only, Dr.

Greene, Joel Block. Fitting of a specialty. Choice Apples!

fast you can hardly

catch them. The country here abounds with them in the summer time and there are some to be found in the winter. 1 managed to catch one of the little lizzards. I was looking at him when he gave a jump and, there was a tale rolling around in my hand. There are no horned toadB here but there are plenty of them in Southern California. There are a great many hillB all over this part of the State. They make me think whenever I Bee them what a pity it is that with such splendid hills there is no snow. There is not much chance for snow whero roses and calla lilies bloom out of doors now. Flowers grow to a great height. Roses bushes, when planted by the house, grow up to the eaves, geraniums grow to be about six feet high and have to be tied up. I can not sny half what I want to say, but will have to wait until another time. I have received

CITY COUNCIL OF KEMPEN.

nulrh Simplicity Was Their SlrotiR ruiiit, l.itip That tif Sorilu Other Iinmpon, a Mwn in Holland on the lower Kiiine (the birthplace of Thomas tt R'*mpis), is a famous resilience of people with small incomes. The imagination of these Dutchmen imisl be as lim-itf-6 as their inuomes, judging from the ilr'jll stories that are toid of them, savs Ilnrper's Young People. .At one time a fire broke out, and much damage was done because the engicoK were out of repair. The council mrt, and after much argument it was vu'.eil that on the eve preceding evenfive the town officers should carefully e\imiue the engines, pumps, et.e. ^l.e of the greatest profits of the town was the toll exacted at the gates. The council wished to increase the income, ai instead of increasing the toll it voted to double the lytmber of gates.

This same council also ordered the snndifll to be taken from the courthouse common and placed under cover, where It would be protected from the weather.

But of all the queer things that are tolrl of Kcmpen and its people nothing is so absurd as this: Grass grew on the top of a very high tower, and the only way these droll Dutchmen could th:nlc of to get it off was to hoist a cow up and let her eat it.

The Palmetto Proving I'bcful. The graceful palmetto, that grows so profusely iu the lower tiers of the southern slates, has recently become a factor in the industries of the south, for its wood is hard enough to carve and its fiber is strong enough to make excellent cordage and a useful substitute for sponges. In Jacksonville, Fla., a factory has been start,c--l for the purpose of making brushes and brooms of the fiber, and elsewhere sink brushes are being made of the wood, half of whose thickness is Vicing converted into bristliug points. The young leaves of the true make a salad chat the people are beginning to appreciate, and the taste of it is likened to that of chestnuts. Hears knew about il long before the people did, and it is a. favorite article of diet among them the black bears climbing the trees and browsing on the fresh shoots ns eagerly as they browse on watermelons.

The Stranger's Sheaf.

An old custom Btill prevails in the western parts of France duringthc harvest season. On the edge of a Held bordering the hiphway a sheaf of grain is left standing", to which all the peasants of the village contribute, and which is called "the stranger** sheaf/' as it is the property the lirst tramp or other homeless wuyfaror who may care to carry it away and profit by its price
