The Mite Social.

The young ladies of the Methodist church gave a very successful mite social at the home of Mis3 Mame Oeraru last evening. Solos were sung by Harry Maxwell and A. A. McCain, and Dr. Tucker read a poem by Whittier entitled "The Crisis." Afterwards all indulged in a hilarious game of illustrated quotations. Each person was given a slip of paper whereon was written a well known line and was required to illustrate the same on the blackboard so that the company could guess what the quotation was.

Very Bucoessfui.

Last evening at the home of Rev. R. S. Inglis nnd wife the young girl's mission band of the First Freebyterian church conducted most successful fair. A ltrge number were in attendance and tho stock in trade was entirely disposed of. Tho entertainmentbesidos being a very pleasant one netted the organization about 850.

A Slight Break.

Mr. Benj. Wasson has been solicited to accept the jxisition of caBliier of a now bank at Elwood, just organized with a capital of §200,000. Advancing yearri and business interests hero will probably prevent him from accepting the posi'tion tendered, yot coming from the stockholders, all of whom are strangers to him, the request is a decided compliment to Mr. Wasson.

The above is not true, nor anywhere near true, and originated in the fertile imagination of tho correspondent of the Oincinnate Hm/uirrr from tliiB city. There are not f3 saloons in tho entire county, let alone Crawfordsville. We are told that there aro not over 31! it) the county altogether, and instead of this city having 53 Baloons there are not 23. We have enough, no doubt, but the truth will injure no body unless it may be this correspondent.—CriticfordsviHe Review.

A casual reader of the above might bo led to infer that our esteemed contemporary had "chased the can" until the subject of saloon became confused with all others. Such, however is not the case. The second paragraph was in answer to a statement made by the LaFayette Times to the effect that Crawfordsville had 53 saloons. The "makeup man" in preparing the matter for the press caused the error which caused confusion to reign in the Review sanctum all day. That "make-up man" was buried this morning without the usual services.

The break calls to mind one made in a Cincinnati paper several yeais ago. The correspondent from Oxford sent in a special relating of the commencement at Miami University and in the dispatch made some reference to the "Alma Mater. The denizens of Oxford dropped dead the next morning when the paper reached there blazing with the glories of "alum water."

The Great .Buck vs. Hughes Case, The great case of Mrs. Lavina Buck against her son David Wesley Hughes has occupied the attention of the circuit court for the post two days. This case begun away back in ancient history somewhere and is famous in the court annals of the county. It began with a suit to rescind a contract and is now involving a suit to quiet a title. It never had over 8200 at stake but the costs have pilsd up during these years of endlesB litigation until they are something frightful to contemplate. The case in one form or another has been fought in four counties and before eight judges,

The last suit has been the cause of three juries disagreeing and when it was given to another last night no man know what the verdict would be. This morning the twelve men returned with a special finding of facts but had spoiled everything by tacking on the end a contract to be entered into between the parties to the Buit. This, of course, rendered their verdict void and Judge Hadley, who presided over the case, sent the jury back to bring in another finding.

Pleasant Recital.

This afternoon at 2:30 o'clock the pupils of Miss Josie Stilwell gave a very delightful recital at 418 south Washington street. They were aasisted by Mrs. R. S. Inglis, whose musical ability is very pronounced, and the affair was a success from every point of view. All the numbers were well rendered and both pupils and teacher are to bo congratulated. An honest Swede tells his story in plain but unmistakable language for the I benefit of the public. One of my children took a severe cold and got the croup. I gave her a teaspoonful of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, and in five minutes later 1 gave her one more. By this time she had to cough up the gathering in her throat. Then she went to sleep and slept good for fifteen minutes. Then she got up and vomited then she went back to bed and slept good for the remainder of the night. She got the croup the second night and gave the same remedy with the same good results. I write this because I thought there might be some one in the same need and not know the true merits of this wonderful medecine. Charles H. Thompseen, Des Moines, Iowa.
