COLLEGE S0TES.
The foot ball players of Purdue met yesterday afternoon and elected William I'. Finney captain for the season of 1893. The choice meets with general approval, as Mr. Finney is one of the most conscientious and cool headed men upou the team, as well ns one of the brilliant plays. When Mr. Finney began playing ball three years ago there was no second eloven to speak of, and the foundation fur Purdue's recent brilliant successes was just being laid. Since then a second—almost a third eleven lias sprung up which is better than the lirBt and only team in which "Captain'' Finney played three years ago. Mr. Finney is a Junior, and has bc-en in the school over three years. It is a little odd that the man who made most of Purdue's remarkable plays the past season, and who proved the wonder of the All-University team down East, should not have cared enough for foot ball the first year he was at Purdue to even attend any of the games than played. The team will lose nothing of its aforetime vigor under the new leadership.—Lafayette Call.

THE ROAD QUESTION.
Thomas E. Howies Coiucs to His Own Defense —A Street Congress. To the Kditortothr Journal,
Ou.w, Ind., Deo., 12.—In your issue of the lOlli inot. you ipiote mo as being opposed to building and repairing gravel rends. 1 cannot see how anyone could pnt'BUch a construction on any thing have said or written on the subject as that. However, 1 will make this plain enough this time. I am in favor of good roads of grnvel or McAdami/.ed if tho fanners want them und can pay for them. But whenever a fellow like Mr. Pope, the great bicycle manufacturer, aud the President of the Amorioan Wheelmen's Association, became so deeply interested in my welfare i»b to grieve over my isolation, nnd figure up the wear nnd tear of my teams aud carriages, in getting my produce to market, I lwgin to think of three card inonte games. I would rather own a farm twelve miles from Crawfordsvilie on a mud road than own one six miles from town with gravel roads on all sides, with an assessment against it for their construction that I could not pay. Only three weeks ago tho railroads and elevator men in Chicago were praying for the fall rains to set in and spoil the country roads. Tho railroads were suffering wivh one of the greatest car famines they had ever experienced and the elevators were overflowing with wheat, thus depressing the wheat market to 01 cents per bushel, a losing price to the farmer. If the country roHds in all the northwestern States ware good all winter, wheat would sell in Crawfordsvilie for 50 cents per bushel, so you see there is good thinking all along the lino on this question. Tn the road congress nt Indianapolis there were theories advocated by some ''diamond fronted dtidis" that if enacted into law would bring open rebellion iu many counties of Indiana. One fellow wanted a law to 30111pel the people to use broad tired wagons and another to use tires six inches wide with the front axle six inches shorter than the hind axle thus making a kind of field roller to haul wheat to town on. There is not a team in the State that could make fourteen miles in fifteen days with such a vehicle empty on thousands of miles of roads in this State. In our prairie roads where there is no gravel it takes high wheel wagon with narrow tires to get through the mud roads. I advocate at Farmers' Institute the enforcement of all laws, especially the road law, and with a progressive, intelligent, energetic supervisor and trustee with public opinion to back them up, we can have as good roads as the farmers are able to build. But any plan that will increase the financial burlens of the farmers will be met with a general kick. 1 never attempt to merely please the public in my institute lectures, but express my own opinion in public questions, and if the public don't like it they can go to thunder. But judging from the following clipping, from the Greensbnrg Standard I stiuck the sentiment of tho locality:
Thomas E. Bowles, of Hamilton county, talked on "How Farmers are Fleeced and How Farmers Fleece Themselves," and his remarks showed '?".t he was an eminently practical alter and a man of experience .. ho dealt with facts ha bitually instead of theories. He pointed out anong other means of loss the failure to raise stock of the best grade- a well bred steer costing no more attention and feed than a scrub and the difference in his favor being about S40 when both go to tho butcher. The piper was discussed with general commendation.
Iu another I clipped the .following from th6 local paper:
Thomas E. Bowles then spoke on "Laws Enough if Properly Enforced," and showed that the statutes now cover aliuoBt everything needed, and he showed that in some respects they contained much that would be better out of them. He showed that he is a good man for institute work, and he and Prof. Latta make a good team.
I noticed in THE .TOIUNAL that Dr. H. V. Tncker preached a sermon on the same subject. If the laws were enforced on the public roads we would not have our free gravel roads cut up by log haulers and other heavy loaded teams. the law is a just one, enforce it. If it is a bad one and unpopular, the be3t way to get it repealed is to enforce it. Our last Legislature promised to do something for the farmers, and they did, but it was increased taxation in place of relief.
I say that the country roads in central Indiana are in a better state of repairs than the townB anil cities. West Market street, in Crawfordsvilie, has not been in good repair to my certain knowledge for three or four years previous to my leaving the county. My driving team always "slowed up" when we struck that road when doming into Crawfordsvilie from Elmdale through force of habit. Kentucky avenue in Indianapolis in the month of August was in such a condition that we could not drive out of a walk on it. The streets of Noblesville are not as good as the county roads between my home and the city. I have been thinking of calling a street congress to meet some time in .rune in some nice shady grove, out where the lambs and the colts grow, to devise some plan to have the streets iu our towns nnd Capital City improve!

An honest Swede tells his story in plain but unmistakable language fortii6 benefit of the public. One of my children took a severe cold and got the croup. I gave her a teaspoonful of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, nnd in five minutes later 1 gave her one more. By this time she had to cough up the gathering in her throat. Then she went to sleep nnd slept good for fifteen minutes. Then she got up and vomited then she went back to bed and slept good for the remainder of the night. She got the croup tho second night and gave the same remedy with the same good results. I write this because I thought there might be some one in the same need and not know the true merits of this wonderful medecine. Charles II. I'hompseen, Des Moines, Iowa. The laws of health are taught in our schools but not in away to be of much practical benefit and are never illustrated by living examples, which in many cases could easily be done. If some scholar, who had just contracted a cold was brought before the school, so that all could hear the dfly loud cough, and know its significance see the thin white coating on the tongue, and later, as the cold developes, see the profuse watery expectoration nnd thin watery discharge from the nose, not one of them would ever forget what the first symptoms of a cold were. The scholar should then be given Chamberlain's Cough Remedy freely, that all might see that even a severe cold could be cared in one or two days, or ot least greatly mitigated, when properly treated as soon as the first symptoms appenr.
