Serious Runaway,
Yesterday afternoon between four and five clock MisB Edna Dice accompanied by her two Bmall sisters started for home just south of town in a surrey, When descending the grade from the the Big Four track on south Walnut Btreet the harness of the horse because disarranged in some way and the horre taking flight ran off. The slope of the grade naturally added momentum ar.d by the time the liitle pide street leading to the Greencastle road was reached the horse was* plunging foward at breakneck speed. Miss Dice realized that she could not hold him and fearful that they should be overturned at the bridge just beyond the creamery and throw 1 down the steep and dangerous embankment she turnred the horse into a tree the side of the street. The surrey struck with a crash and the horse breaking loose ran on'home. The two children crawled out from under the cemolished surrey unhurt, but MIEH Edna hud not fared BO well. She was thrown over the dashboard, and it was feared upon her arrival at home that, one of her bones were broken. Dr. Histine was summoned and pronounced the injury nothing ing worse than serious bruise. Miss Dice suffered considerably all night and was unable to be up to-day.

Miss Mary H, Krout's Misfortune. Last Monday evening Miss Mary 11. Krout met with a most painful and serious accident. She was waiting for the approach of a street car in Chicago and as it»nearod she stepped off the curb. The distance to thepavoment below was greater than she had calculated and her foot turning as her weight carao upon it her ankle was given an awfui twist. The pain produced was so great that Miss Krout fainted quite away and knew nothing more until she found herself coming*to consciousness on the lounge of a neighboring drug store. The ankle had swollen greatly and at last accounts while it was not certainly knowu, it was feared thr.t the small bones had been broken. At any rate the injury is of such a character as to necessitate her confinement for a month. This will delay intended trip to the Sandwich Islands in the interest of the Jutrr Cretin, but the management of the paper will retain the assignment until Miss Krout is sufficiently recovered to make tha journey.
In connection wiili the accident there was quite a pleasant little incident. Mi-s Krout carried an accident policy for S2.j a week and when the examining surgeon of the insurance company called bhe was struck by something familiar in hi* face. Inquiry developed the fact that the surgeon was Ernest Hancock, a former pupil of Miss Krout's in the Central school of Crawfordsville. His fathar was a well known plasterer here then and Ernest going to Chicago had acquired a medical education and riseu to a place of distinction in his profession.

Chnrles Rogers, of Mulberry, who completed a sentence of two years in the penitentiary yesterday, was not satisfied with being behind the bars and so he came to LaFayette, filled up on bad whisky, tried to take the town, was jailed by the police last night, and was this morning returned to jail for twelve days. He and his brother were sentenced for stealing clover seed, and the brother was here, too, but he escaped.-— LaFayette Courier.
The Roger boys were Bent up from this country and lay in the jail here for a long time. When taken away they created a scene at the Vandalia station by their lamentations.
Pettit the Martyr.
Mrs. Elizabeth Loup, the insane lady of New Boss, was put in Pettit's old cell at the jail yesterday and at once begun to whoop and tear about declaring that it was her province in life to see that the martyr was freed from the pen. She declared he was innocent and unjustly imprisoned and that she intended to wade up there to Michigan and Bet the dear man free. Throughout the period of her incarceration she continued to rave about the great wrong done the great and good man, Fred Pettit.

An honest Swede tells his story in plain but unmistakable language for the benefit of the public. One of my children took a severe cold and got the croup. I gave her a teaspoonful of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, and in five miuutes later 1 gave her one more. By this time she had to cough up the gathering in her throat. Then she went to sleep and slept good for fifteen minutes. Then she got up and vomited then she went back to bed and slept good for the remainder ot the night. She got the cronp the second night and gave the same remedy with the same good results. I write this because I thought there might be some one in the same need and not know the true merits of this wonderful medecine. Charles 11. Thompseen, Des Moines, Iowa. I'ut l'p ami 1'ut //oicn. I want a word to rhyme with ills. l^-'v-I have it now: I'll put down pills.
Kxcuse me, though- than put down pills, "I'd rather sjtter some big ills. To put down the old-fashioned, huge, bittor pills, that gi iped so and made such disturbance internally is more than a wise man will do. He will put un with such unnecessary suffering. He uses Dr. Vicrcc's Pleasant Pellets. As a Liver Pill, they are unequaled. Smallest, cheapest, easiest to take. Put up vials, hermetically scaled, hence always fresh and rc'iablc, which is not true of the large pills in wood or pasteboard boxes. As a gentle laxative, only one Pellet for a dose. Three to four of these tiny, sugar-coated granules act pleasantly and painlessly as a cathartic.

The laws of health are taught in our schools but not in a way to le of much practical benefit and are never illustrated by living examples, which in many cases could easily be done. If some scholar, who had just contracted a cold was brought before the school, so that all could hear the dsy loud cough, and know its significance see the thin white coating on the tongue, and later, as the cold developes, see the profuse watery expeotoration and thin watery discharge from the nose, not one of them would ever forget what the first symptoms of a cold were. The scholar should then be given Chamberlain's Cough Remedy freely, that all might see that even a severe cold could be cured in one or two days, or at least greatly mitigated, when properly treated as soon as the first symptoms appear.
