luterestinc Services.

l?ev K. S. I nglm, phstor of the First Presbyterian church, will devote one Sunday evening in each month to the hv 11111 writers. The subject to morrow night will be "Charles Wesley." In these services a biographical sketch will be given with a history of some of their most familiar hymns, which will be sung by the congregation, the choir not doing so much hinging a.9 at the song services. A pleosiint part of the programme, too, will be the responsive reading the scripture. Programmes will be furnished those attending.

A Wordy War.

A groat war is being waged 111 the Commissioners' Court in the highway case of David Stanford et, al, vs. Chas. Kountree and others. The case is from Ripley and the piaintiiT is represented by Capt. Billings, while Hurley .t Clodfelter are in the points for the defense. The suit is to remove a highway which now runs through the Elmore farms and place it on the section line. The CRse is being discussed and stubbornly contested. It has now occupied two days.

Still Tied Up.

The latest news from Waveland is to the etTect that the Midland tie tip is still in force. No cars except those carrying the United States mail are permitted to run and thing begins to look ugly again. Changing the name does not seem to have placed the road beyond the pale of difticultioB and tie* tips.

The Musical Amateur Glee Club of Indianapolis was delightfully entertained at the pretty home of Mr. and Mrs. Gibson la6t evening. A musical programme was given and the favors consisted of lovely little celluloid calendars having a bunch of forgetmenotn and a bar of words and music of "Auld Lang Syne" deftly painted. Luncheon was served aV !):30, the tables being tastefully decorated with choice (lowers. Twenty guests participated and all voted Mrs. Gibson a charming hostess

When the big tank at the water works was drained last week for the purpose of cleaning it out, the bottom of the tank was covered with fish loa depth of three feet. We can hardly complain of Crawfordsville water after a perusal and consideration of the above.

Complains of ttie Jail.

Tom Oane, the I Arlington terror, is going up and down the land defaming the fair name of the Montgomery county jail. Thomas declares that during his recent incarceration here that he was linabb to steer clear of the festive "gray back" and other vermin which he asserts infest the jail to an alarming extent. He declares that it is a dirty old hole and that he came near being eaten alive during his imprisonment.

TaUe as a foundation an oM ami muoh shnmken ilunnol blanket which by dint of frequent washings had beeoine of a yellowish shade (if it is of home weaving so iniu-h the better"!, and make it of the rirht wiiitli to cover your lounjro nicely, falling,' ahnost to the iloor. Look amon^ tiie bundles in your piece ba«j for breadth or two from an old woolen dress, which, like a thrifty housewife, you have laid aside against the hour of use: tear it into strips from nine to twelve inches wide line with old paper muslin, to {five body, and baste in the edjfcs: with a bit of ehaik draw on these strips a running vine with leaver and an open petalled flower, or scatter a dogwood blossom and leaf here and. there over them. Work these in old jrold and dull reds if the {roods is blue, in fainter rods and dead jrold if it is red, usin«r outline or short and long- KVnsinrjton which tills in very rapidly with crewels.

Haste these strips lengthwise on the blanket, leaving a space about as wide as the strip between each and ap»liquc them with crazy stitches or herringbone. usinjr black crewels, ifty cents worth of crewels will more than sufliee. Stripes from a trolden brown serge, cashmere or flannel dress, worked with darker browns, the designs afterward outlined with yold, make a very rich .cover. If any old yoods which you may happen to have, is too liffht dye it. Finish with a hem or heavy fringe.

One of these shrunken blankets dyed a dark brown ami worked with crewels gold, wood, golden and seal browns in interlaced rings and crescents makes a very nice rug. These are easily drawn with an inverted tumbler. l»its of dark colored cloth cut in crescents, lleur-de-lis or circles, interlined, basted on and appliqned with crewels is another way of ornamentation.

A very pretty little ornament, and a useful one. too. for a lady's bureau can readily be made from the small shell* that you have gathered while at the seaside last summer. Drill holes in the shell with a small awl, one hole at the point, and one on either side at the top, then tie the shells together with banv ribbon, any color that suits the maker, the one

I

made being of orange. This

being done, cut out a piece of cardboard in the shape of a circle sufiieientlv largo to form a bottom for the little basket. Cover this piece of cardboard with silk of the same color as the baby ribbon.

Fasten the shells by means of the latter to the bottom and then line the interior with silk of the same color as that on the bottom, making it into putfs. and there you are. When *ompleted you have a neat ami handy receptacle for rings and jewelry anu also a pretty ornament. You can vary the style and have the little basket square or oval shaped.
