GLORY, REMORSE AM HONOR
Be to Miss Emma Conner, For She Gleans Jim Starke Out Completely. It was 4:0 o'clock yesterday afternoon before the jury in the slander cftse of Emma Conner vs. .lames II. Slarke returned verdict in the Putnam circuit court where the cose had boon venued on the defendant's motion. The veidict gave the plaintiff judgment in the sum of §1.000 and ousts. The jury had been cut so long that people began to think it was going to hang but the time was passed in a wrangle ovar the amount of damages to bo allowed. Some desired to give the plaiutitt S-VJOO while others wished to allow less than SI,000. Finally, however, all came around and agreed to make it an even thousand. Starke came up from (ireeneaetle last night and panned the morning with Hurley «v Clodfelter, his attorneys. Mr. Clodfelter states that he has found several important errors upon which he will base an appeal for a new trial. When asked it Starke hud the money to pay out Mr. Clodfelter gave one of his characteristically foxy grins and stated that Starke's farm had been in his wife's name Tor two years and that \ie had mighty little personal property. Starke will probably hustle around and sell that little before judgment ia taken. Judge vomas will go to (Treetieaatle next
Monday and insist thr.t judgment be rendered at once so as to clean Starke out as soon as possible.
The verdict was no surprise as Starke had pursued his victim with tinrelentng fury and malice, always refusing to retract and declaring that he could prove his vile charges. Even on the witness stand Lis malice was patent to all. The published accounts of the trial give no adequate conception of his charges as they were far too vile to even hint at Slander suits usually fail but Miss Conner's was ail exception.

Yesterday afternoon oflicers (iiimes and Gill were summoned to Charley Annabel's popular lupinr dispensary near the Monou station to look after a gang of tramps that had taken possession of the place and were drinking up ill the costly beer. The tramps were having a great time and when one was nsked to give his place of residence he threw back his head and exclaimed proudly:-, "We live under tie skv.' When requested to "come along" there was a demurrer filed and cot until it was overruled by Mr. Grimes' knocking two of the gentlemen down did the procos aion eturt for the jail. This morning tihov were given tivo uiiuute6 to leave town and left 011 the gallop.

The Dear Old Midland Railroad Again in the Tureen. The famous old Midland is in the soup again and a jolly war is on which promises to equal that of somo months ago. This morning at Waveland Mar shal Moore tied up a passenger train fcr a board bill amounting to S~0.73, which he road owed F. C. special from Anderson 6ays: Business is at a standstill to-day in the yards of the Midland Railway Company in this city. Madison county's treasurer, Page, has been after the road with a sharp stick for delinquent taxes. Several locomotives have been attached and the company, becoming alarmed, has stopped all trains at. Noblesyille. Not a train has entered or left Anderson since yesterday forenoon. All of the company's engines have been sent out of the county. Mail matter is neither coming in or going out The out-bound stuff lies piloif up in the depot. The payment of its taxes is not the only obligation the company has to meet. This morning its section employes refused to go to work until they received all the back pay due them. There is no indication of a cessation of hostilities.
Death of Mrs. Benjamin Oompton. A letter to the editor of this paper from Benjamin Compton, formerly of Co. I, .SGtli Regiment., lmt now of Manhattan, Kan., conveys the sad information that his ivife, Muhala Shannon Compton, died on the 12th of October, the result of malarial fever and erysipelas of the throat. His late comrndes will deeply sympathize with him in his great bereavement.
Death of Mrs. Eobert Irwin. Tlii9 morning ai the family residence on west Market street Mrs. liobort Irwin died of consumption at the age of 22 years. The funeral will occur on Sunday at an hour yet to be fixed. Mre. Irwin's name was Lvda Vance and she was a daughter of the late Isaac M. Vance. She was a young woman of many good traits and a large circle of warm friends mourns her death. .* iu.

AFTERNOON REUEPTI0N.
Mrs. S. M. Ootf'man and Mrs. W. T. Miller! Entertain a Most Oharmiue Manner. Yesterday afternoon at 402 west Main street Mrc. S. M. Coffman and Mrs. W. T. Miller were at home to their lady friends. The hours of entertainment were from three to five, from four to six, and from five until seven. The rooms were tastefully and elaborately decorated and showed exquisite art in tloral decoration. In the double parlors the lights were of a delicate yellow shade and the candles were of a color to match The lloral decorations were hynuciuthe, and po'ted plants, while the chandeliers and curtains were gracefully garlanded with smilax. in the library and hall the ights and candles were pink with lloral decorations of plants and smilax. in the dining room the shades were green and the tables were decorated with andles to correspond, Marectial Neil roses, Emilax and cut llowers. Befreshments were served by the caterers in three courses and before each course l'rof. Brandkamp, who presided at the piano, rendered in his faultless style
The Maiden's Prayer.'" The hostesses received in the parlors and during the hours of entertainment extended their hospitality to over 150 invited guests. They were assisted in the dining room by Mrs. Dr. McConnick, Misses Lulu Keegan and Lulu Bromley. The affair was one of the most pronounced social successes of the Benson and waB a decidedly fashionable affair. No detail had been ammitted which was needed to make it complete nnd enjoyable for the guests and the entertainers are to be congratulated upon its successful conduct. The guests were entertained in an admirable manner and are all highly pleased.

A splendid Debate.
The Freshman class of 111. city high school numbers 1-t m^mbars and main tuns two very excellent and llouriiihing literary societies. Tin* work don-.) by these organizations is of a superior character and the debates are always fraught with interest. One of the most notable of these'otvurred this morning when the question "Should There He a Compulsory L'i\v wiis discussed. The allinnativ" was sustained by Misses Hutton and C.iro and tli" negative by ?Jisses Hunk and lv.ving. Tli« judges were .Mibp Maymo '/l.-ranl and Messrs.
F. I'. Mount and Tom Moore who re tired at the conclusion of the speeches and awarded the decision to the allinnative. The speeches were, without exception. thorough, vigorous and convincing and worthy of much older. p?rsons. The ell'ort of Miss Cord deserves especial mention because of its great research and local application. Among other interesting things t-he demon strated that 17 per cent, of the children of school age in Montuoineiy county did not attend regularly enough to be enrolled.
Amused t!:s Gieenoaslle Council, :••••, This afternoon at 2:30 o'clock an alarm of lire was sent in from box twenty-three, near the gas factory and everybody ran out in the streets to see the cruel, hungry llames licking up something or other. A run was made but it proved to be an exhibition run for the benefit of the Greencastle council. (Ireenca6t.le is comtemjilating the purchase ot afire alarm system and Mr. Chandlee, of the Gainewell system, brought them here to show them how it worked. They wera highly pleased and will probably purchase the Gamevvell if any. The Gainewell i6 the best system going or Crawfordsville wouldn't have it.

An honest, Swede tells his story in plain but uninistukable language for the benefit of the public. One of my children took Bevere cold and got the croup. 1 gave her a teaspoonfnl of Chamberlain's Cough liemedy, and in live minutes later 1 gave her one more. Bv this lime 6he had toeongh up the gathA- ering in her throat.. Then she went to sleep nnd slept good for fifteen minutes.
Then she got up and vomited then she went back to bed and slept good for the remainder ot the night. She got the I croup the second night and gave the same remedy with the sumo good reslilla.
