Tried to Bhnffla Off.

A special from Ft. Wayne says: George Reed, advance press agent for the Leslie-Davis Dramatic Company, attempted suicide to-day in the Rich Hotel, by turning on the gas. He was nearly dead when found. Ou a card laying on the stnnd were written the following words: "God bless one that I love, nnd keep her pure and good," Bud he wound up with a. '-roast" for Fort Wayne.

The above will be of pecular interest in Crawfordsville where Reed was so well known and where "the one that I love" is supposed to live. Reed had been with Davis some time and last spring took the Keelov cure. He was a well educated and popular chap but had suffered many reverses during his career, chietly because of his drink habit. He died in a few hours after being taken to the hospital.

The World for Christ.

Dr. Cunningham's Christian Endeavor sermon last evening was listened to attentively. He compared a C. E. meeting where each member is pledged to take part ana does, to the ordinary prayer meeting which but for a few, he said, would be a regular Quaker meeting. The most interesting part of his remarks, however, were in regard to scheme he had heard discussed at the State Y. P. S. C. E. convention of evangelizing the world in a single generation. The conception is a grand one and it is something more than a dream for Mr. Wishard who has just returned from a five years' tour of 'the world with this idea in view has figured out exactly bow many men and women and how .much money it, would take.

Gentle Annie.

Tlioro was a full attendance of tlie comrades, and the election resulted as follows: Post Commander, II. li. Talbot Senior Vice Commander, II. GifTord Junion Vice Commander, C. W. Elmore Surgeon, E. U. Cowan Chaplain, A. S. Holbrook Quartermaster, L. A. Foote Officer of tl day, M. Y. Buck: Officer of the Guard, Z. M. Ball. The Adjutant., Quartermaster Sergeant, Sergeant Major and other appointive officers will be uppoin',od at the installation which will take place on the first Saturday night in January. Delegates and alternates to the annual Department Encampment to be held at Evansville next spring will be chosen at the next regular meeting. General orders were read from the Department Encampment urging npon the different Posts of the Indinna Department to be fully uniformtil at the next

National Encampment at Indianapolis. A resolution was introduced to the effect that tlie figures "184G-184K" should be erased from the Indiana Soldiers nnd Sailors' monument in order that the monument might commemorate the valor and patriotism of Indiana soldiers in the war for the preservation of the Union as conceived by its projectors. The resolution was lost by a vote of 29 to 16. McPherson Post thus places itself on record as being against the purposes and objects of the originators of the monument.

Claims Everybody.

The Brookville correspondent of one of the Chicago papers writes up the former citizens of that place and anion other things says the following:

Maurice Thompson, the author, was born in Brookville nearly tifty yenrs ago. His parents wer« excellent people. His father was what was then known as a "hard shell" Baptist preacher. Before his children were grown he removed to Georgia and his sons, when they grew np, went into the Confederate army. Maurice Thompson's sojourn in the south during his youth and manhood gave him the material from which he has since written innumerable sketches and stories. He is, however, a native of Brookville.

The one citizen, however, to which the people point with special pride is Gen. Lew Wallace, the author of "Ben Hur." By a singular coincidence Mrs. Thompson, the mother of Maurice Thompson, cared for the future author for a time after his mother's death. The boy would never go to school, but spent most of his time scouring the hills anil fields, acquiring a familiarity with nature that has since served him in good stead. When his father was elected Governor he went with to Indianapolis, where he studied law. He entered the army when the Mexican war broke out, and served with distinction. At its close he began the practice of law in Coyington, Indiana, having married, in the interval, Miss Susan Elston, of Crawfordsville, a sister of Mrs. L.ine, widow of Senator Lane, who was also in 1861, elected Governor. In all his varied career Gen. Wallace has called Craw fordsville his home, but he still comes back to Brookville for an occasional visit nnd to revive the memories of his youth.

Oon ID the Tureen.

The Terre Haute Express after pub lishing a special from Crawfordsville relating Chief of Police Meagher's exploit with "Goldie" here Friday night 8BJ0!

The Express took pains to verify the story of Superintendent Meagher's escapade as told by the Crawfordsville dispatches. Police headquarters were called up about 10 o'clock and the Express was informed that Meagher had gone home about 8:30. HiB residence number was given by the otlicer on duty and Meagher's house was visited. An elderly man came to the door and said that Meagher did not live there and that he didn't know where he lived.

He admitted that the residence number was 325 Gilbert avenue, which is the same as given at police headquarters and in the directory as bying Meagher's home.

Madame Hammond's place was then visited and the girl seen. She admitted that she and Meogher had passed the night together, adding that, she could not well refuse as Meagher was supposed to have her under arrest. She says that no charge has Iwen tiled against her for theft and she is now an inmate of Madame Hammond's place.

Breakfast Eehind the Bars. Mr. Frank Marr is said to be contemplating the publication of a book entitled "All night in Jail.-' The book will be based on the author's personal experience if published. Frank is barkeeper at the Johnson's place on North Green street nnd Saturday night after eleven o'clock was still selling to tha actors in the "Lost in New York" company. He was warned to close and did bar the police out They were unable to get in but procuring a ladder looked over the transom nnu beheld Frankie make a sale of jag juice. He was at once arrosted nnd jailed, passing the night there. He was released yesterday morning on S100 bond, and passed the day in abusing ofiicoi Gill and declaring that the city would go Demo crntic the next election. It nlways would have gone so if Frankie's had been decisive.
