He Read the Summons.
Our old friend "Elder" Jacobs is rapidly coming to the front in the profession of law, and hnrdlv a day passes but that he tiles a case in the circuit court. He is of an economical turn, however, and often to save his clients costs he will executo a summons himself. The other day armed with a summons he started after Uncle James Pairo aud found the old gentleman in a stable. Now Mr. Paire believed that if he could escape hearing the reading of nny part of that summons that ho could not be held to answer by the court for nonappearance. Accordingly when the reading begun he turned to Use but was juickly seized and thrown by the brawny attorney who, placing his knee ou the chest of the would bo escape, proceeded to read the summons in a loud voice. Mrs. Pairo came rushing in and being advised by her husband stood in the door to screen the light of the fast declining day and so prevent the awful reading. But the erstwhile preacher was equitl to the occasion and grabbing her he held both Mr. and Mrs. Paire until his official duty had been accomplished. Then he went, his way with the satisfaction born of a work well done.
The Fireman's Ball.
The fireman's annual masquerade ball last evening at the P. O. S. of A. armory was the pronounced and decided success it should have been. These entertainments have always been well patronized and highly enjoyable aud the affair of last night proved no exception to the established rule. The music furnished by the Music Hall orchestra was new and all first class and proved of great service to the merry dancers. Mayor Handel and lady led the grand march and after it the dancing began and continued until a late hour, everyone milking the most of it. There was quite a large number of masquers on the tloor but many were not and the mixture rendered the situation all the more amusing, especially for those masqued. When the home waltz was played everyone was tired but happy and left the hnll highly pleased. The management is to be congratulated upon the successful administration of the event which was wholly devoid of any unpleasant features.
Death of Mrs. James Kvar :. At the residence of Jati.e. rtyiiu, two miles south of New Ross, Winnie, his wife, departed this life at 'J o'clock, Nov. 23, with the dreaded disease consumption. She was fort) years fid and leaves a husband and four children to mourn her loss. Funeral services were held at the residence, Rev. A. 1'lunkett officiating. Interment at the Stoner cemetery.
Yor are probably worrying about what to buy for ChriBtmas. Let Nicholson help you out by making a life size picture.
As to Oliver.
To tin-Editor the Journal. DAIU.INI:TON,NOV. 24.— Knowing your desire at all times is fairness to all and knowing that you have been imposed upon by your informant as to the character of one Oliver Hamilton, wish to correct you by saying that the said Oliver is well and favorably known here as a quiet, inoffensive boy. lie is known to take his own part but is far from being the aggressor you pictured him to be. AB to his racket at Bowers many good citizens say that he was perfectly justifiable in all he did as all was in self defense. As he is a son of a veteran the same spirit that desecrates soldiers' tombstones caused him to use his knife, and plenty of good men are ready to stand by Oliver in this case. If they will tackle him one at a time I will guarantee that he will be the last one to use his knife, but four at a time are too many. ONE WHO KNOWS.
