Smooth Swinalera.
Anew swindle h'is recently come to light, as worked by a couple of sharpers. One goes through the country on a firstolasB bicycle, and strikes a town and claims to be hard up. To make a raise he sells the wheel for a paltry sum and leaves the town. A few days later the other fellow comos along looking for a wheel which was stolen from him, giving a full description and the number of it. He discovers the wheel was sold by his pal and claims that it was stolen from him, proves his property and departs with it. The two sharpers have 820 or more to divide and leave for new pastures to work the scheme.
Hurrah for Ohase.
There was a rich joke perpetrated unwittingly last night at the Fisher jollification in the south end. Read Hannn arose to speak and with hie head thrown back thundered out that the Democratic electors in Indiana had been electod. The crowd cheered wildly and Read, who was evidently rattled, announced that Ira J. Chase, the Democratic candidate had been triumphantly elected. The crowd which was oblivjpus to what was being said, cheered wildly and joy was unconfined.
Bad Smash Up.
Last evening Jack Bald win and Bob Goben started for the country and when several miles out tried to pass another vehiole which was going at a rapid gait. Their buggy struck a stump and was smashed to kindling wood, they being thrown out in the mud. They reached town about 1 o'clock this morning badly used up.

A WORD TO HUSBANDS. We hear much of the duty of wives to always greet their husbands with a smile when coming home tired from their work. There is another side to the picture. If husbands would only realize the thousand annoyances incident to housekeeping they wonld feel it just as much a duty to do all they can to make life pleasant for the hardworking wives. Many a wife is a sufferer with dyspepsia, constipation and sick or nervous headache. In such case go to the druggists MofTet A- Morgan and get a fifty cent bottle ofLoe Angeles Raisin Cured Prune Laxative which is a sure, safe and pleasant cure.
A Phenomenal Record.
The drama brings out in its full strength the fervent Christianity of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Tho book itself had a distinctively religious influence. A Bible was presented the author as a testimonial by an association of workingmen in England, on the occasion of a lecture delivered on "Uncle Tom as an Illustration of Christianity." The work found sympathetic readers among all classes and creeds. All protestant Europe read it and it was placed' in the index of the Roman Catholic church.
In France the enthusiasm for the work created a demand for the Bible of Uncle Tom and actually increased the sale of the ecrfptures.
Heinrich Heine, speaking of his return to religion, 6ays "With all my soience I have come
DO
further than the
poor ignorant negro who had scarce learned to spell. Poor Tom indeed seems to have seen deeper things in the Bible than I. The reawakening of my religious feeling I owe to that holy book."
Mrs. Lenowens, formerly English governess in the family of the King of Siam? tells of a lady high in rank who after reading the translation of Uncle Tom's Cabin, ever afterward signed herself Harriet Beecher Stowe in order to express her entire sympathy with the author. "And her sweet voice always trembled with love and music when she spoke of the lovely American lady who had taught her, even as Buddha taught kings to respect the rights of her fellow creatures."
Ed F. Davis' colossal spectacular Uncle Tom's Cabin Co. will appear at Music Hall Nov. 22.
A Country Wedding.
Quite a numbar of persons from this city attended the marriage of Albert ArneB and Miss Minta Goben last evening at the residence of the bride's father Jesse W. Goben, several miles north o' the city. Nearly 100 guests were present and the affair was quite a brilliant one. The ceremony was performed at 8 o'clock by Rev. John L. Miller. The bride and groom were attended by J. D. Moore and George Goben and Misses Brant and Detrich, of Indianapolis. The ceremony took place under united hearts of chrysanthemums. The bride, a very pretty young lady, was attired in a cream colored silken traine and carried a large bouqnet of roses. After the ceremony an elegant collation was served. The young couple begin life under the most auspicious circumstances attended by the best wishes of a large circle of friends.
A State Exhibit.
The sixth annual chrysanthemum show and floral exhibition of the society of Indiana florists will take place at Tomlinson hall, Indianapolis, on November 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19.
Not alone are all Indiana florists interested in this exhibit, but the people of the entire State, as a love of flowers is among the refining influences of civil ization and should be encouraged. The Indiana chrysanthemum show now ranks among the four largest and best in the United States, being exceeded in general excellence only by those of New York, Boston and Philadelphia. In addition to the magnificent display of chrysanthemums there will be choice exhibits of roBes, carnations and of those wonderful plants with their eccentric beauty —the orchids.
The Midland Again,
The Midland railroad seems to be lying asleep in reference to completing the line to Brazil. They pretended to be using every endeavor to reach this city before bad weather, and seemed to have plenty of cash, but they stopped suddenly and now a large number of redeceived employes are patiently waiting for the pay car. One who is in a position to know whereof he speaks savs that a deal is on between the Midland and the Ft. W., T. H. & S. W. to have tho former buy the truck between Bridgeton and Carbon now owned by the latter. If this deal is consummated theMidland's line will be complete.

Chare** Against an Kvungrll.t. COLUMBUS, Ind., Nov. 11.—There

trouble in Edinbnrg, a town of 3,000 inhabitants 10 miles north of this city. Rev. This sermon has greatly excited the citizens of the town, aud the professor is out in an open letter iu which he accuses Rev. Mr. Small of making a custom of playing checkers in a public restaurant until after dtidnight with leading a band of bad boys on Halloween night with inviting into his pulpit a noted gambler to. lecture and with doing several other unbecoming things.
