A HEAVY LOSS.
The Elevator of Bcott Darter Consumed by Fire Last Night. Last night at 9:30 o'clock Tilly Weil, the butcher, noticed fla.neB breaking from the second story of Scott Darter's elevator at ,the Big Four crossing of Grant avenue and at once turned in the alarm. Before the bell had sounded, however, the large wooden structure was a mass of flames and although the department arrived in a remarkably short spa^e of time the building was doomed before water was thrown. The old plaoe burned like tinder and fanned by the north wind roared with an awful noise. Whole boards in flame were lifted by the hot air
and
scattered broadcast
all over the neighborhood south of the elevator. Burning shingles Hew as far south as the Masonic cemetery and a number of barns were fired. Three houses just south of the railroad were also fired and it took hard work to prevent a general combination in tliat end. Goods were hauled fr the houses and scattered about in ret kless profusion on the
ground.
A !rei ht train stood
on
the awitch by th elevator and although the crowd worked hard two new box curs were consumed eutailing a loss
ol
about 31,200. Tho elevator and its of fice were wiped co p! -tely out and the department worked ir:til 2 o'closk this morning playing on the ruins and extinguishing the fire. The losa on tho elevator was about $3,000 and on it there was $1,000 insurance in the Milwaukee Mechanics and $1,000 in the Citizens, of Evai.sville. The loss on tho grain so far as Mr. Darter was conoerned was covered by an insurance of 82,500. There was about 3,000
bushelB
of wheat,
a large amount of oats, 50 bushels of corn and a carload of flour stored there and all of it was lost. The wheat did not all belong to -. Darter but was much of it stor the re by farmers and buyers, one man depositing 500 bushels only yesterday.
The origin of the fire is a question and various theories
are
advanced. Some
think a spark from an engine did the work but the wind W.H in the wrong direction and tho lire originated on theinside of the buildinc*. The theory of incendiarism seems not plausible and tho last theory advanced is spontaneous combustion. How 1* did happen will probably never be known.
Mr. Darter will pivbably rebuild on the site of the old elevator and keep up his thriving business. In his misfortune he has the sympathy of the entire community. His business has been constantly growing and flourishing and the fire came at a most inopportune time. .'
John Lamb Skinned.
John Lamb, the famous Democratic ward politician and ex-M. C., got into an argument with a Republican drummer at one of the hotels this morning. The drummer was a smooth citizen and as he had the fncts on his Bide he soon had Johnny "up a gum stump." Then Lamb began to bluster and finally declared that wheat had never before been so low B6 at present. The drummer asked Mr. Lamb if he would wait until documents could be brought down from upstairs to prove the contrary. Mr. Lamb stated that he would but as soon as the drummer left the room he arose, paid his bill and silently made a retreat while the interested audience smiled softly, oh so softly.
"Johnny Smoker."
Whether it was the "Johnny Smoker" immortalized in the college song we do not know but at any rate some time ago John M. Smoker of Plainfield, N. J., died holding an inburanse policy for S3,000 in the Wabash Valley Protective Union. The policy was in favor of his wife and daughter, Margaret and Ann Smoker. These ladies were able to collect but $300 of the insurance money, BO to-day through Crane & Anderson'they entered suit for 83,000.
Kennedy at Mace.
P. S. Kennedy and the Morton Glee Club went to Mnce last evening, where they were greeted by a school house jam full of people. Mr. Kennedy made a convincing speech on the tariff and the curronoy, and the frequent applause was abundant indication that the arguments wore appreciated. The Glee Club sang six selections nnd brought down the house every time.
Turn Out In Large Numbers. Every Republican should bo at the Morton club rooms this evening promptly at seven o'clock to escort W. E. Humphrey to the court house. We have the Democrats on the run how and let every protectionist turn out. It iB expected that several Democrats will join the club.
