th you wish to vote a mixed ticket, stamp in front of the individual name# you ivinh to i-ote for, and nowhere elue.

Facts to be Remembered,

The Republican party, by its representatives in Congress, removed the tariff from Sugar, THE DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS

VOTED UNANIMOUSLY AGAINST REPEALING THE TARIFF ON SUGAR. The Mills tariff bill which the Democrats formulated and passed through the

House PUT A TARIFFOF'JW CENTS PER POUND ON SUGAR. This was in accordance with the recomenmendation of Mr. Cleveland's Secretary of the Treasury, who said, in his official

Keportof ISSfl: "Ouroivn pugarcropisso very small apart of the total amount of sugar we consume that sugar ranks next to articles wholly produced abroad Iikc tea and coffee in suitability for (tariff) taxation, on the ground that its consumption Is universal, that the tax is easily and cheaply collected, that the increase price paid by the consumer is an unconsidered trille." etc. The "unconsidered trille" of a tax on sugar as Mr. Manning shows in the next paragraph of his report is nearly lifty-tvvo millions of dollars yearly: and this is mostly paid by the poor people for

NINETY-NINE HUNDREDTHS of THOSE WHO USE SUGAR ARE POOR. President Cleveland sent this recommendation of hin Secrtary of the Treasury to Congress with his approval. enry Watterson, who did more than all others secure the adoption of the free trado plank in the Chicago Democratic platform said In his paper of

Aug. Gth, 1SD2: "WE WILL RE ESTABLISH THE TARIFF ON SUGAR YIELDING AHOUT foO.OUOO.OUO ANNUALY TO THE TREASURY Let every poor man ponder these facts and if he mints to be taxed just as much as the rich man, let him vote for lirookslnrc, and Mr. Watterson's "revenue tariff on sugar." IJut if he wants sugar to remain free, let him vote the Republican ticket.

CONDENSED MILK.

A gentleman in this city who uses a considerable amount of condensed uiilk has been making his purchases at a cer tain house in town, and until recently the price paid was sixcanB of one pound each for $1. When he made the last purchase ho only received five cane When the merchant was asked the canse of the increased price he replied that the McKinley law had increased tno duty on condensed milk and he was compelled to raise the price. The patron was in credulous and made inquiry of one his fellow workmen who bad in his pos session a copy of the tariff law both 883 and 1890. Turning to the item of condensed milk he showed him thnt the law of 1883 placed a duty of 20 per cent, on the article, while the law of 1890 reduced it to three eentu a pound Under the old law even if the tariff was ndded to the price the duty was 20 cents. Under the new law the duty on six cans would have been only 18 cents, and on the five cans which he received on account of the "McKinley law" it is only 15 cents. This patron could have been deceived in 1890 but in 1892 the same tactics will not work. This purchaser of condensed milk will hereafter bnv elsewhere. He will buy where the dealer will not attempt to compound his politics and business with the same postle and mortar.

who violates this provision of the law will be subject to a fine of not less than SCO nor more than $500.

FREE TRADE FACTS.

Mr. Jamen Moon'ii Kxperlence Iluylng Stuff* for Trousers. Here is a free trade item that will interest the venerable Jaines Moon, who has retired from his farm near Lakevillo and lives in the suburbs of South Bend. On Jan. 19, 1!?59, in those good old Democratic days when Buchanan was president and there was

110

"Re

publican robber tariff," Mr. Moon came to South Bend from his Union township farm and bought material for a pair of pants. All wool goods were then so high priced that he bought satinet, a cloth made of cotton warp and woolen filling, which is rarely sold in these days of low priced all wool goods.

Mr. Moon bought U}» yards of satinet at 75 cents a yard yards of drilling at 12) cents a yard, 14 buttons for 11 cents and a skein of linen thread at 5 cents total, $3. He then had to pay for having the pants made by a tailor, or get them made at homo. Today tinder a protective tariff, he can buy satinet at 50 cents a yard and less. He can buy a pair of ready made satinet pants from 1.'Jo to i?2.

The Tribune has not trusted to Mr. Moos.'s memory for these prices, but taken them right from the merchant's daybook where they were charged at the time he made the purchase.—South Bend (hid.) Tribune. (Extiact from dayIwok of country store in 1S.VJ.)
