Scarcity of Good Attraotioi Crawfordsviile, and in fact all other towns under 20,000 population are having great trouble in scouring good attractions for their theaters this season. Only a few good shows can be obtained and the dates consequently have to be let to Hocks of jays and barn storming brigades. The reason of this lies in the fact that the per cent of theater goers in largo cities is constantly growing larger and the number of theaters greater. All first class attractions endeavor to book for long stand 3 and consequently do but little flying about the country as they did formerly. The small places are thus squeezed out and it is only when a theater burns or a good company has a week between stands that they come in for anything respectable.

Wick Smith goes Down Before the Fiery Eloquence of J. A. Lightfoot. The A. M. E. church was handsomely lighted last evening and a brilliant assemblsge of white and colored young people met to exchange the compliments of the season, eat the choice refreshments, nnd hear tho soul stirring debate between Wicklyffe Smith and Mr. J. A. Lightfoot, the handsome runner of the Bobbins House, who, although a comparilive stranger in our midst has a'roady endeared himself to many hearts.
The usual preliminaries were of un•lsiml interest. The judges chosen were good men and tree and reflected not a it Jo glory on the evening's proceedings They were Joe Fos°ee, Tom Pike llobioBon and Sennet Kirk, the last named gentleman .being chosen because of his profound knowlege of parliamentary laws obtained from his association with the literary societies Wabash College. Mr. Fo6see was chosen because of his intimacy with Mr. Lightfoot, and Mr. Robinson on account of his business relations with Mr. Smith, who had just taken a contract to renovate his store. The question for discussion was: "Resolved, that the man of thought is entitled to more applause than the man of action." Mr. Lightfoot appeared on the affirmative and during his opening speech said little and giggled a great deal. He saw something awfully funny on the bonnet of a oerte'.. young lady and just couldn't have refrained from laughter to have saved his job. When he sat down and the doughty Wick came to the front it looked mighty dark for the affirmative. Wick'e argument was both convincing and weighty and was received with wild applause. He placed the following example before the judges to convinoe them that the man of action was entitled to consideration: "Suppose, gentlemen of the jury, that I was in jail, not an unsupposeable case perhaps, and suppose that the jail doors were wide open and the jailers fast asleep. Would I be deserving of the applause of my fellow men if I sat there with my chin between my knees and thought and thought and thought?
Not much I wouldn't. Mental meanderings would avail me nothing. To win applause I should arise and show my action. If I moved I should be more worthy of applause than if I thought."
This argument was seemingly unanswerable but Mr. Lightfoot warmed up in his reply and Burmounted the difficulty by proving that it was perfeotly easy for the man of' thought to break jail while the guards were down town and so run no risk of them waking up. Mr. Lightfoot was given the decision of the judges unanimously. After the de bate a few appropriate and commends tory remarks were made by Messrs. Nick Harrison and Scott McDonald whose presence and rare eloquence gave tone and touch to the meeting.

The.. Saloon Keeper*' Union Make an Interestlng Visit to Mayor Bandel. Late yesterday afternoon a committee from the Saloon Keepers' Union made a call on Mayor Bandel at his office in the city building. The committee was headed by Otto Schlemmer who acted as spokesman and stated the obje!t of the visit. Mr. Schlemmer Btated that the members of the Saloon Keepers' Union desired to live up to the law of the land and further that they desired all the protection the statutes afforded them. He complained bitterly of the business done by the several disreputa ble joints outside the city limite on the pike roads. Mr. Schlemmer stated, and not without warrant, as everyone well knows, that these joints are operated in defiance of all law and decency. Their proprietors, he said, were holding government license only, but for all that openly and without attempt at concealment, sold in less quantities than a quart and at all hours on all days. He also denonnoed the dives within the city limits which operate on the Bame documents and declared that they defied the law and greatly damaged the business and characters of the law abiding saloon keepers. He desired that the Mayor force all the "last chance" saloons to take out city license or so prosecute them as to close them up. Mr. Schlemmer stated that the Saloon Keepers' Union desired the Mayor to enforoe the laws rigidly—the Sunday closing law and all.
Mayor Bandel responded that nothing would give him greater pleasure than to put an end to all illegal sales and doings in the business. He stated that he would at onoe look into the operations of outskirt saloons and would spare no paius to bring them to time. He would also be delighted to enforoe the closing laws in the city and was glad to reoeive the endorsement and cooperation of the better class of saloon keepers in the work of reform.
From present prospects it really appears that Cruwfordjville will soon be noted as the most moral town in the West.

IN POWER.
ICCpllllllfllfellH Dcitioi'r.icy ami the Result.
Closing with the administration of President Buchanan, in 1860, the Democratic party was thirty-two years In power In the United States, and the Republican parly Is now closing Its thirtysecond year In management of National affairs. Under the long series of year9 of Democracy, slavery had fastened its fangs almost fatally upon the Nation. Demanding Its extension Into free territory, the long struggle culminated in 1300 In open war because it was defeated by t- people and In the throes of tho Southern rebellion the Republican party came mto power.
It Is not the war to which we desire briefly to call attention, but rather the utter Incapacity of tho Democratic party to manage public affairs. The present statesmen of that parti are wont to call the period between 1850 and I860 the ••goMen era" of the country They say It was the best the country erer saw. And It was a comparative free trado period, too. Ilut among the last messages to Congress during this period, President Buchanan declared that great industrial depression prevailed all over the nation, that the fires In the furnaces had gone out, the looms and spindles stood still, and that idle wage workers by the thousands were begging for bread. History records the fact that in order to obtain funds to run the Government the Nation negotiated loans and paid 13 per cent. Interest for money. It was during this same period of Democratic business debauchery that the Infamous tree bank system and the awful financial condition prevailed—this same system which they resolved in their national platform at Chicago to restore, by removing the "tax barrier that now keeps it down. The reader who can remember back to 1S50 to 1S60, knows how disastrous this wild-cat banking system was. How In a day or an hour after selling his produce, or his labor, the stuff called bank bills, became almost worthless. And this was the "golden era" of the country they tell us. Certainly it was tho end of the Democratic party for thirty-two years.
Then began Republican administration. A wise tariff law was passed in 1861, and a protective tariff has stood upon the national statute book ever since. Under this American system and policy the Nation has increased in wealth, prosperity, and development ton fold more than during a like period of Democratic ascendency. A financial and banking system has' been established that Is as 9ecure as the everlasting hills and our bank paper passes current in every part of the country. Whereas the Democratic party closed Its thirtytwo years borrowing money at 12 per cent, under Republican management our credit Is so good that we float our national paper at 2 to 3 per cent., and ire rapidly wiping out the debt loft by the Democratic rebellion. "Golden era" Indeed was 18!0 to 1860! But not In the mind of any mar, who has a memory of that time. To utter such a declaration should blister the lips of him who speak? so falsely.
It is the prayer of those who remember ihe disastrous times of that tree trade era, that the Republican policy is but entering upon another thirty-two years period.
There is more Catarrh in this seotion ot the country than all other diseases put together, and nntill the last few years was supposed to be incurable For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires constitu tional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by J. F. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the only, constitutional cure on the market. It is taken internally in doses from 10 drops to a teaspoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars for any case it fails to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Address,
