M. fiarte: went to ZionBvil'.e I this morning. 1 —J. R. Bryant and wife ore home froai Colorado. —Wm. Detrich, of Wsvc'and. was in the city to-day. -Wm. and David Iiomlcy went to

LsFayette this morning. —Robert Wilson was down from Frankfort to spend Sunday. —Social at C-enter charch Tuesday evening, snpper served from 5 to S o'clock. —Mrs. Charles Morse, who has been visiting relatives here left to day for her home in Beloit, Kansas. —Chautauqua Circle books have arrived and the Circle will meet this Monday evening at 7 o'clock, at the usual place. —The report that the basement of the central school building is in a bad sanitary condition is unwarranted. The basement is as dry as '.he bones of an Egyptian mumny. —Misses Mary Gray and Belle A'len made a flying trip to the Junction this morning and unfortunately missed the return train, necessitating their stay at that delightful resoit for several tours. —The Y. P. S. C. E. of the Christian church will give a mite social at the home of Cal Barnhill on south Walnut street on next Monday evening. All the young people of the city are cordial ly invited. —Misses Etta and Susie Alfrey, of

Crawfordsville, are visiting in this city. The former is the guest of Mrs. J. W. Alfrey, of north Ninth, and the latter of Mrs. Joe Smock, of north Tenth.—Terre Haute Express. —Rev. A. K. Glover, late of this city, is tignring indirectly in a great sensation at Madison. He married Miss Maggie Sheik, an heiress, to a saw mill hand named Crozier and the town is all torn up over the misalliance.

Here To-nirht.

LaPearl's show appeared in our city last Wednesday. The large tent in the evening was packed to its most capacity. Everything about the tent is in order, making it pleasant for their patrons. Manager LaPearl was introduced to us by one of his employes, and we eipected to find a man on the big I and little kind of order, but such was not the case. We found Mr. LaPearl to be a gentleman in every respect, sociable and pleasant to all. Xot only the manager himself is a gentleman, but his people are all ladies and gentlemen, and first class people in their line of business. We visited the show both afternoon and evening, and like many of our citizens. v,ere sorry to see them leave so soon, and it was the best we ever saw. and you will miss a treat if you fail to see it.—Clay City (111.) Aih-ornU.,:

Go to the Shades.

A nujiber of person* irom this city visited the Shades yesterday Bnd report the scenery there as magnificent. "Upon the hillsides maples blaze and the quiet river moves 'neath arching canopies of shifting flame." Th? rare foliage of the opulent autumn is now seen in all its beauty, and then the ride home under the dear old moou, who grew callous long ago to all the frivolity of the young is just unspeakably divine. As the clouds of dust rise from the horsei'hoofs the young man in a choking voice murmurs, "Wilt thou?" and the maiden with a maddening cough reponds, "I wilt."

Sons of Veterans, Attenuon! Regular meeting of Camp 211, S. of V., on Monday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p. m., sharp. Members will please take notice.

WM. ii£. WHITE, Com.

I'urc ana Wholexome yuallty Commends to public approval the Cal ifomia liquid laxative remedy, Syrup of Figs. It is pleasant to the* taste and by acting gently on the kidneys, liver and bowels to cleanse the system effectually, it prumotes the health and comfort of all who use it, and with millions it is the best and only remedy.

flE 18 STILL AT IT.

Oai Jolly Old Burelar Oosies Down Town to Operate. Our jolly old burglar was evidently discomaged after his ineffectual attempts to burglarize the Alfrey mansion and thi Moran cottage, and accordingly laid off for several nights considering the sanation with fasting and prayer—chiefly fasting. After the repose of the quiet -Sabbath, however, he girded up his loins and started out for the butiness portion of the city. He thought at first he would burglarize a saloon, but he found them nearly all to be hives of busy life, so he concluded to tackle a hardware ftore. He lost little time in tnking a pane of glass 011*. of the back window of Mahoruoy Sons, and was soon reveling in the gorgeous supply tf knives, razors and cold cash. He took three or four dozen pocket knives of all grades, a number of valuable razors and than breaking open the money drawer abstracted several dollars of the ooin of the realm. He may have taken a few other such little nick nacks as iron mantles or hay rakes, but if he did they have not yet been missed. A very sad feature in regard to the stolen money was that $1.50 of it was the property of Miss Georgie Lee, who was almost inoonsolable when her loss was announced. We trust the burglar will see that he robbed a young lady and will send it back to her through the postoffice. If he is lost to gallantry he is fallen indeed.

Withering Scorn.

Bob Osborn, of the Waynetown Hornel, weloomee the rival newspaper with bloody hands to a hospitable grave. He thus effuses: '-Knowing that there is a foitune to be made in the newspaper business right here in Waynetowu where one paper can scarcely exist, the Wingate Graphic, which failed at that place, has removed to this village, and will cast its nets to the four winds in hopes of snaring a few suckers. Competition (composition) is the life of news gatherers and the Hornet aduiires the courage of the gentlemen but deplore3 their judgment. A new broom sweeps clean, hence the first issue of the new sheet will be brim full of witticisms and rehash of local brevities. The Hornet, of course, will not be in the swim, but will take aback seat and plod its weary way to fame and prosperity. The offer to buy the influence of the Hornet for ten cents, was rejected with scorn because the editor wanted fifteen cents, and could not get the ten cents after sleeping over the proposition." Bob closes by offering a brand new satin badge to be worn on Columbus Day to all who pay one year's subscription in advance.

The Waynetown war is on.

A Word In the Council's Ear. The council meets this evening and it is to be hoped that something will be done to abate, prohibit and forever consign to the closet of oblivion the tin horn. Already the vicious urchins of the neighbors are beginning to toot their worse than infernal machines and of peace there will soon be an end unless the council comes to the front and saves along suffering people. Let us live in decency and in order and if any man attempts to blow a campaign horn shoot him on the spot. The horn is a relic of a barbaric age and hasn't been put to any good or reputable use since those old chaps blew down the walls of Jencho with it several years ago when the earth was new and civilization a babv. The rum power isn't in it with the campaign horn power when it comes to causing public unhappiness and domestic infelicity.

The Annual Meeting of Horse Thief Detectives. The annual meeting of the National Horse Thief Detective Association composed of all the local companies of th^ States of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, will be held at Anderson, this State, beginning to-morrow and continuing two days. There are thirty-eight companies in this county and each company will have from one to two representatives. Among those who went from here to attend the annual meeting are Capt. H. H. Talbot, Arch Bailey, Alien Robinson, R. A. Smith.

i' fettitt's Attorneys File Su This afternoon in the superior court Colonel R. _P. DeHart and others, attorneys for W. F. Pettit, brought suit against the county commissi ners for 31*2,000 and en per cent, interest from September 2S, 1892. The complaint recites the same facts as were contained in the petition denied by the commissioners. Stuart Bro6. .V Hammond are attorneys for plaintiffs.—Lafayette Courier.

There is more Catarrh in this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and untill the last few years was supposed to be incurable. For a great many yeart doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. .Scienee has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires constitn tional treatment. HRII'S Catarrh Cure, manufactured by J. F. Cheney & Co Toledo, Ohio, is the only, constitutional cure on the market.* It is taken internally in doses from 10 drops to a teaspoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of" the system. They offer one hundred dollars for any case it fails to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Address,

Darlington Doings.

We wish to call attention to the fact, that the mastodon remains as safely imbeded in the earth at the corner of George Lynch's residence in Honey Creek valley as it was the day the glacial drift caught it thousands ot years ago. Suppose a syndicate organizes, purchases the ground and develops what is in it. Hurry up gentlemen. No use for foreigners to get the benefits.... Dr. Greene, of Crawfordsville, and Dr. Berryman removed a cataract from Luke Cassida's eye Sunday. Luke was nearly blind, but the operation has wonderfally improved his sight. The operation was successfully and very skillfully performed.... Hurrah for John Brown! He is not running for President but he is the first man to bring us in a load of good wood this fall....Rev. E. T. Spohn and family left for their new home at Greencastle Monday, with the beet wishes of this entire community— Darlington Echo.

Badly Hurt.

Saturday night as M. S. Smith and wife were walking on the west side of Elston avenue Mrs. Smith had the misfortune to step in a hole in the sidewalk and sprain her ankle in a most painful manner. She was carried to a neighboring house and medical aid summoned. It was found that the ligaments were broken and if Mrs. Smith is able to touch her foot to the floor in six weeks she will be doing unusually well. A damage suit against the city will probably result. r': ..

More Gravel Boad.

A mile and a half of gravel road has just been completed between Shafer's gate and Shannondale which is of inestimable value 10 the people for miles aruund it, as it makes a short cut where before was a several mile drive. Th beauty about it is that it was built vere cheaply. All the farmers in that section subscribed money, teams and labor so that it was built without levying a cent of taxes.

S. H. Clifford, Xew Cassel, Wis., was troubled with neuralgia and rheumatism, his stomach was disordered, his liver was affected to an alarming degree, appetite fell away and he was terribly reduced in flesh and strength. Three bottles of electric bitters cured him.

Edward Shepard, Harrisburg, HI., had a running sore on his leg of eight years standing. Used three buttles of electric bitters and seven boxes of Bucklen's arnica salve and his leg is now sound and well. John Speaker, Catawba, O., had five large fever sores on his leg, doctors said he was curable. One bottle of electric bitters and one box of Bucklen's arnica salve cured him. Strong nunesses.

Among the thousands of testimonials of cures by Dr. Milee's New Heart Cure, is that of Nathan Allisons, a well known citizen at Qlen Rock, Pa., who for years had shortness of breath, sleepleseness, pain in left side, shoulders, smothering spells, stc. one bottle of Dr. Miles' New Heart Cure and one box of Nerve and Liver Pills, cured him. Peter Jaquet, Salem, N. J., is another •witness. For twenty years suffered with Het. Disease, was turned away by physician^ as ncurable, death stared him in the face, could not lay down for fear of smothering to death. Immediately after using Sew Cure he felt better and could lay down and sleep all night, and is now a well man. The New Cure i« sold, also ree book, by Nye 4 Booe. .4 Cure for Paralyxts

Frank Cornelius, of Purcell, Ind. Ter., says: "I induced Mr. Pinson, whose wife had paralysis in the face, to buy a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain Balm. To their great surprise before the bottle was half gone she was a great deal better. Her face dad been drawn to one side, but the Pain balm releived all pain and soreness, and the mouth resumed its natural shape." It is also a certain cure for rheumhtism, kme back, i?prains, swellings and lameness. 50 cent bottles for sale by N'ye A Booe,
