Tbe Musical Amateurs.
The Musical Amateurs' Society wiil branch out this year nnd its work and purposes will be of a much more ambitions character than before. The First Presbyterian church has been leased for the recitals of which there wiil be nine during the season, which begins on October 10. '.The work will begin with the etudv of the mimical nrt of the fourteenth century and will be pursued in a thorough and systematic manner, the topics being taken up in chronological order.
A very pleasing feature to be introduced this year into the work of this admirable society will be the admittance of associate members who by the payment of S2.r(J are entitled to nil the privileges nnd immunities of other members and subject to none of the iuties.
Off for Elwcod.
There has been a great deal of talk thus nir during the campaign about the lack of enthusiasm, but those who snw the El wood special at the Ynndalia station this morning were disillupioned. Notwithatanding the fact that it was raining cats and dogs and other animals too tedious to mention the platform was crowded with over 400 eager excursionists who seemed willing to brave the fury of all the elements combined to listen to the golden words of the great ex|xmnder of protection. When the train arrived it already had on nine conches well filled, nnd when it left Crnwfordsville there was a jam. More cars were to be taken on along the route but it really looked an though it would be hnrd to accommodate those wishing to go. If the weather had been fine it would hnve le.en absolutely

The Matter Cornea Before a Special Council Meeting anil Is favorably Ilsgazded. The Common Council of Cruwfordsv'.lle held a sjecial meeting last night to pans ou some bids. The contracts for graveling and putting brick sidewalks on 1 locum street were let as was also contract for graveling the alley east of the Mills Fchool building. Owing to a misunderstanding in regard to the specilicutions the bids for paving the url houso alley and extending the arket street sewer were ail rejected.
The City Engineer brought out a nrge pile of street paving brick which had been sent to him by the various factories of the country and offered them for the consideration of the Council. The question of street paving then came up and was discussed at some length. .Strange to relate there was not an objecting voice raised, but nU seemed to heartily tavor the measure. 1 the spirit of the meeting is to be taken as a criter'o:i it is not improbable that before many moons the streets of Crawfordsville will undergo the beginning of a great revolution. The work will lRgin with the paving of Washington and
Main streets in the business portion of the city and will gradually be extended nntil the paving system embraces every street of any importance. The best method of paving was earnestly discussed and it seemed to be the general impression that the best receipt was the following: Brick laid Hat on eight inches of snnd above these two inches of sand nnd then the exposed brick laid edgewise.
There was some divergence from this, however, nnd in a few days the Council will make visit to South Bend to inspect tLe system of paving in vogue there, it heing said to be giving great satisfaction.
GATHER MAIL i'ROM HOUSES,
Important Improvement of the Government Mail Service. A special from Washington says: Postmaster General- Wanamaker to-dHy issued his expected order deputizing tho postinnsterB of free delivery cities, towns nnd rural communities to put up letter boxes, on the request of citizens, for the collection nnd delivery of mail at house doors. The order, it is said, affects nearly 3,000,000 residences to which the free delivery service is already extended, aud it is regarded by post experts as the most important departure in the free delivery of mails since the beginning of the system under Postmaster General Blair.
The Crawfordsviile postollice has not yet received its instructions and to the authorities here are unable to sav just how it will effect matters in this city and county.
Testimonial to Eev. H. 0. Hovey, I). D, The South Congregational church in Middletown, Conn., has been ministered to for a year by tho Rev. H. C. Hoiey, D. 1\, during the nbseuce of the regular paste in Europe. The following official action is gratifying to all concerned "We hereby testify that Dr. H. C. Hovey, during the year he has spent among us, has greatly endeared himself to our congregation, from the oldest to the youngest. His preaching shows, not only thorough knowledge of the word of God, but also great breadth of mind, a wide range of experience, nnd an appreciation of the demands of the times being uniformly interesting nnd attractive. His bearing toward the young icople nnd children wins their confidence and esteem. In pastoral work we have ever found him sympathetic nnd faithful, especially in the hour of trial nnd affliction. In practical affairs he shows unusual business tact and ability, always ready for any duty, and full of strength, vigor and" cheerfulness. We heartily recommend Dr. Hovey to the churches, as Christinn gentleman, nnd a successful preacher of the gospel

—It is urged by the Crawfordsviile press that all the schools in the county join ir. a great celebration of ColumbuB Day, Oct. 21, nt the county seat. We object. This is not in accordance with the spirit of the President's proclamation, nor will it suit the people at large. All cannot go to the county seat, but there are very few people who cannot go to the school lioute in their own neighborhood, snd there carry out the program ne that has been arranged. We want the Waveland schools to celebrate the day at home.—

Will give the grandest entertainment ever seen in Crawfordsviile on west Main street, near Grant avenue, Friday •ind Saturday nights of this week, with 4rand matinee Saturday. This skillful trainer has some half hundred ponies, md as many dogs. It is marvelous to behold the intelligence he has awakened :n these dumb brutes. They seem to comprehend every word spoken to them, and their feats are as amusing as they are marvelous. The performance is well worth seeing. The animals show that the) have been carefnlly trained, and perform their different parts in a manner that seems to be as pleasing to themselves as it is to the audience. The drilling of the ponies is splendid, and 1 he dogs, as a whole, are pehaps unequaled. Admission 10 and 20 cents.
