THE W. 0. T. U. CONVENTION.
Resolutions Adopted,
Oommitttees Ap
pointed and the Glorious Cause of Temperance Moved 1'orward a 1 ew Steps. The county convention of the W. C.
T. U. met yesterday raoruing at 10:15 at the First Presbyterian church. Mies Hay, of Indinnnpolis, opened the meeting with prayer and was followed by Miss Dixon in a half hour conversation. A committee on resolutions was appointed composed of Mrs. Dr. Griffith, Mrs. Ora Anderson, of Ladoga, and Mrs. McCain. A committee to adopt planBof work was also appointed consisting of Mrs. McKnight, Mrs. Ora Anderson and Mrs. Elvira Cox, of Darlington. The afternoon session began at two o'clock. Miss Hay read the constitution of the county union and it was adopted. Oflicers for the county union were elected as follows: Mrs. Ora Anderson, president Miss Alice Burns, corresponding secretary Airs. Jenkins, of Darlington, recording secretary. Mrs. M. M.Whiteford and Miss Mary Ilovey gave interesting reminiscences of temperance work they had done in former years. Resolutions were iidopted which in brief wore as follows: The association favors both the enforcement of the present laws and the enactment of absolutely prohibitive laws and pledges itself to use every means for the furtherance of this end. It eschews tobacco in all its forms and believeB in the enactment and enforcement of anti-tobacco laws. It extends sympathy to ministers actively engaged in fighting intemperance and extends thanks to the First church and papers for favors shown.
The following report of the work already done was submitted: The W. C. T. U. ladies of Crawfordsvillo are very glad to welcome the officers of the State and delegates from sister Unions, and hope that much good may result from the convention.
Our Union was organized by Mrs. NichollB, Ma/ 2nd, '92. In our first report, June loth, we had fifteen members and how we have twenty active and two honorary members. In our Sunday school work we raised money by a social to place ninety copies of our Sunday school temperance paper, "The Young Crusader" in the two mission Sunday Bchools of this city. Our hope is that they may do good gospel temperance work.
In our Sabbath observance departments we appointed committees to call upon the business men of the city and secure signatures to a Snnday closing paper. The merchants express a desire to close it all the others would, and if the people did not demand Sunday opening. After we secured the signatures of almost every business man in town, a committee of men took the matter in hand and agreed to see that tho law was enforced. Tho citizens know whother it has been done or not. We sent an endorsement to tho City Council of tho movement made by some of the gentlemen to have tho screens removed from the saloons. It has not been accomplished yet, but we have not lost hope that it will be done in tho future.
We have faith in our young people being able to do a great work in thiB I cause, and promise to the "V' about to be organized all the aid in our power.
It iH a grand opportunity and wo think our young women and men will reorganize ii as such. And now wo make an earnest appoal to tho ladios of Crawfordsville to join us in this work, well named the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.
Tn the evening a "Y" or young ladies auxiliary was formed with the following officers: President, Alice Burns, Vice President, Mabel Leech Treasurer,Clara Brockman Corresponding Secretary, Gertrude Mills Recording Secretary, Hattie McClure. This morning at 7:30 o'clock all the oflicera and young ladies will meet Miss Dickson at the Ensminger boarding bouse on east Main street, and will receive instructions for action from her.
A South Sea Islander.
There is one in town. He is with the museum at the fair grounds. You may have noticed him around town. He wears long hair dangling over his shoulders. His akin is a muddy brown, and he attracts attention wherever he goes. Although he has been in this country but two years he speaks English remarkably well. The natives of the Islands are Malays who inhabit the Malay Peninsula. Our vioitor is a long way from home to be alone and ho says he is the only one in this counUy.

entire outfit and rent the floral hall addition after the fair. The art exhibit is much larger than ever before.
Several loads of stock were brought in last night. There is a scarcity of heavy draft horses this year.
Harry Hornet will be a favorite in the 2:25 pace to-day. Rensselaer Wilkes will bo favorite in the three minuto trot.
Joe, a Lafayette horse, will be a favorite in the 2:27 trot. The double back action hay loader in machinory hall,is a novelty.
A refractory jack played havoc with south side stables yesterday. The crowd yesterday was larger than usually attends a common fair.
An "an old man ^cactus" in tho lloral display attracts no little attention. Rensselaer will probably be saved for tho SI,000 purse at Indianapolis next week.
Nat Vance, the blooming drum major, amused the children with his baton yesterday.
The horse that runs with the Grimes sisters in their exhibition race has a mark of 15.
Tho registered draft and heavy draft horses and dairy cattle were exhibited in the ring yesterday.
Miss Eva Thomas showed a decided ability in heavy tragedy in "The Tragedy of Codar Glen Bridge."
Tho school display of drawings and ponmanship in do ral hall shows tho skill of Montgomery county scholars.
Miss Brown, of Yountsville, Mrs. Titus, of Alamo, and Ed MoXutt will exhibit pianos in the musical department.
Sid Conger, of Flat Rock, Ind., is on hand with his herd again this year, lie has not missed a year since the fair started.
Ira Boohor, of Darlington, is showing buggiea made by tho Howard Co., of I Galion, O.
On Friday Gee Grimes will attempt with his mare (iuerta to break tho track record of 2:21 J, which was made in '83 by Flora Bell.
A. ICostonzer has at his store an elegant S-150 mahogany dining room set which his space will not permit hie exhibiting on the grounds.
The display of G. Kostanzer & Sons in the northwest corner of the east wing of floral hall, where they have been for thirteen consecutive years, is the most attractive the firm has had on exhibition for several years. Their sociable parlor suit and bedroom set have a sure thing of first premium. Their display of rugs and carpets is also very fine.
Nicholson & Sons' photographic display in thb north wing is the cynosure of all eyes. The unique frame of Paris panels and the mammoth water color panel are unlike anything ever before exhibited here. Several handsome easels are also on exhibition in their department. They will take all the ribbons.
The exhibit ot Rial Benjamin lookB like a veritabie plumbing and fixture establishment. They have made connections to water from their bath tubs, water motors, wash bowls and water closet attachments, which givon tho department a "plumb" appear'ince. Tho display is in the east wing ot lloral hall.
