CLOSE OF THE INSTITUTE.

Proceedings of tho Last Day and Various

Notes of Interest.

.Miss

Laura Wallace entertained several of her young lad.v friends at her homo on West Walnut street in honor of her friend, Mrs. Dr. Beam, of Crawfordsville.—Frankfort Xewn. —Conductor Bills, of the Morton, who was badly injured in the frightful wreck near Crawfordsville last .lanuarvt was in the city yesterday for the first time since tho accident. He is one of the most popular conductors in the business anil one of tho most trusted men in the Moncn's service, and t.ho traveling public will gladly welcome his restoration and his return, to tho duties he has always discharged so efficiently and faithfully.—Luf'tiyvltc Cuurier.

The closing day opened auspiciously, the weather some cooler, and nil looking forward to an interesting session. Secretary McKay led the prayer and read the Bible lesson, Miss Wilson, pianist, and F. T. Maxwell chorister. Supt. Zuck announced that some change would be necessary in the programme, aB part of Thursday's work was crowded out by W. H. Elston's talk on the Beading Circle work. "Evangeline" was discussed by Prof. Ilarwood, who pre faced his remarks by some intert sting facts about the writers, Longfellow and

Hawthorue, and their works. He thought tho theme of the poem was woman's devotion, which is not the usual interpretation. He then showed how we uiuy study and teach the poem in our schools. The class of little boys and girls introduced by Miss Montgomery then gave a pleasing illustration of Kin dergarten work. For the training they had had they certainly did remarkably well, proving their instructress to bo an artist in her profession.

The Institute which has just closed has been the most successful in tho history of the county. The attendance was larger than ever before and tho attention closer. The instruction was bettor and the satisfaction more general and out spoken. Too much credit cannot bo ascribed to Supt. Zuck for his efficient management of this affair or to his able corpB of instructors for thoir untiring and painstaking efforts. Prof. Harwood completed his fourth year's work here with a better reputation as an institute worker than even

has heretofore sustained. His clear, logical and forcible presentation of his branches has been of immense benefit to the teachers and all unite in extending their thanks. What has been said of Prof. Harwood's fino work can with equal justice bo said of that of Prof. Warfel and Miss Montgomery, both of whom were in ability and popularity far above the average institute worker. Montgomery county, which four years ago had hardly a respectable institute, is now one of the best if not the bost in the State. Nearly every teacher in the county attends, and attends to loarn nther than to gad tho Btreet or exchange the compliments of the

court house corridors. Supt. Zuck has I made out of comparatively nothing a splendid success and deserves the congratulations of all.

llillsboro and Yoedersburg have been troubled with thieves, presumably the same om who raided a couple of stores here Monday night. At llillsboro Wednesday night thoy secured nine gold watches, several revolvers, besides numerous other small articles of value. A woman accidentally discovered them sleoping in the woods like tho two babes in the old story, but not equal to them in ljoauty and innocence. In fact they were two negrooB, one a follow of gigantic build and the other a mere boy. Th woman gave the alarm and soon a dozen men nil armed with revolvers surrounded the thieves. They wore surprised and captured without the less of a single man. In tho march toward town eight, men were ill chargo of the big follow but in Bpito of them he got away. It was when they wore climbing a fence. All but two of them had let go and with a surging of his powerful arms lie sent them whirling and quickly disappeared. Every man in the party tired his revolver but without effect. The boy was loft, however, and was secured by handcuffs and a chain attached to a heavy iron wheel which he dragged ovor the Rtreots of IJillsboro all day.

1'urcantl H'liolcxomo Quality Commends to public approval tho California liquid laxative remedy, Syrup of Figs. It is pleasant to the tas'l.e and by acting gently on tho kidneys, liver and bowels to cleanse the system effectually, it promotes the health and com fort of all who uso it, and with millions it is the best and only remedy.

After-Glow.

When the western sky is fading, And tho sun is sinking low, Comes a brighter ruy of glory,

Which wo call tho after-glow.

'Tis the sienal for tho darkness This lust Hood of golden light, Tis the Day's last loving tribute

To her darker sister, Night.

You have seen this ray of sunshine Kre the light begins to wiiue. Is it not a solemn promise

That the day will dawn again.

On the race stamped by Death's pallor Can be seen that after-ray. As a message to the living,

Telling of another day.

Then mourn not. ye sorrowing mortals, For lite dear ones 'ncatli the sniw Live a life whoso culm reflection

Is within that after-glow. —Nannie Snow Longley. South Pasadena, Cal. S

"Faust and Marguerite."

The grent French anthor, Victor Hugo, said of the immortal play, Faust uud Mnrguerito: "It appeals to all minds with the irresistible fascination of an eternal problem, and with the charm of endloss variety. It has every element of wit, pnthos, wisdom, buIToonry, mystery, melody, roverence, doubt, magic and irony. Not a chord of tho lyre is unstrung, not a fibre of tho heart untouched."

"After-Glow."

The beautiful little poem, "After Glow," which is printed elsewhere in to-day's JotniN.U was written by Nan
