A Large. Aitun'iauce and an IntercstiUG i'rograunne Bcintr Carried Out S The Montgomery Count/ Teacher's Institute met in tlio court room this morning and was called to order by County Superintendent Ziu-k promptly it a. m. The attendance was quito large at the opening feBsion, 108 teachers enrolling before noon and contributing the required fifty cents. Many old familiar faces were to be seen with
Hiito a sprinkling of new ones. The nstructors for the week are J. Frank Warfel, of Ladoga, H. E. Harwood, Attica, and Miss Sadie
IJ.
Montgomery, of
JefTersonville. The veteran teacher, D. H. Oilkev, of New Market, presided at the Secretary's desk and took in the shekels. Prof. Warfel's talk on Methods was very interesting and was listened to with deep attention, the handsome and versatile editor being a most earnest and thorough institute worker. Prof, llarwood discussed Geography in his usual happy vein, both instructors liasng their remarks on the Science of reaching as it has been taught in Instill to work for the past few years.
NOTES.
Prof. George Zook leads the music. W. A. Bell will be with us during the week.
Ex-Superintendent. \V. 'J'. Fry was a welcome visitor. riv Frank Cornell, the genial bachelor, is in attendance.
Miss Nannie Harris will teach the. Soap Factory school. V"!v 1'lie total enrollment in l.S'.ll was'Tfio, ind in IS',12, to date, ltt'i.
Aubrey Bowers will teach Greenwood school in Walnut township. Geo. Welly will teach r.t North Salem nit is in nttendaneo as usual.
Prof. W. W. Ewing is acting agent for the
Indiana School Jaitnial.
Eph Vanscoyoc will teach at the Willis school, No. !), this winter. Prof. Harwood has been in charge of the Attica schools for live years.
Mary Lowry, of Pockville, will touch her lirst school in this county this fall. W. Most, of Hoston, is here representng the Educational Publishing Company.
Elmore'llobson will have chargo of the elegant new school house our worthy trustee is building in Fiskvillo. v.
Miss Ida William, of htockwell. formrly a teacher of Tippecanoe county, will teach in this county this winter.
An entertainment and social will be one of the features of the Institute, to be given probably Wednesday evening'
There are IS'2 licensed teachers in the county at present and 201 are required to till all places, leaving 22 places yet to fill.
Harry Maxwell attended the mornin session, leaving at 1 p. in. for the Battle Ground camp meeting where he sings this week.
In the discussion of Geography the word "man" was given for "people." The suggestion was made that "man" was the proper term, for^.mnn

woman. See? All who are interested in education are cordially invited to attend the ses sions of the Institute. Too little in terest is manifested by patrons of sclioosl ill institute work.
Dan II. Gilkey has been in attendance at county institute sinco ISfifi, missing but one in that litr.-'. He has taught, since ]Si',:!, except, three years, while clerking in a dry goods establishment. Talk about pensions! is3 Montgomery's talk on primary work was highly appreciated, many of the teachers jusl awakening to the fact that the real work of teaching begins with the primary work. -Miss Montgomery has a pleasant manner and good delivery though speaking from manuscript.
A Groom Jailed For ileing Drunk. Mention linn been made that Merritt Corey told Esq. Overton that ho could not make the change so as to pa}' him 2" cents for saying the marriage ceromony last Saturday. AVell, within twelve hours after Corey was married he was in jail for being drunk and paid a fino of S10::i5. lie undoubtedly had money when he was married and did not want to give it up. It is a shame that a man should get drunk any time and especially »pon his wedding day. lie seemed to consider his wife as being worth 25 cents, yet ho paid forty ono times that sum for getting drunk. This is a poor beginning in married life but let us hope that he may seo the error of his way, pay as much to Esq. Overton as he did to the Mayor and make a new start upon life's journey.
Fonud Htm Guilty.
This afternoon the case against 1J. B, Smith, clored,. was again up before Esq. Overton. Smith entered a plea of not guilty and was placed upon the witness stand, and fiom his own evidence the court found him guilty. Ho wa.*? lined ?1 with cost of and at the hour c.r going to press he, in company with a constable was limiting some person to go on his bond to keep from being sent to jail. This evening there in a case against- him in tlio Mayor's
court.
Take Thought for the Future. From observations it would seoni that some persons have an idea that to get married is the accomplishment of a life's work. When the fact is, that it is only just the commencement of the journey. Persons have been known to get married in this conntv when they had to borrow money to procure a license, and beat the oflicinting clergyman or Squire out of his foes. Ministers have hired carriages and drivon many mileB, and then did not receive money snllioient to pay the liveryman. Persons lieforo they marry should have some definite plans as to what they will do after the "honeymoon" rolls past. If they would, there would not bo so many persons tiro of matrimonial life, and the lawyers would pine away sighing for divorce cases.
New Postal Money Orders.
This month the new postal money orders will go into uso. The system has been so that there is little or no complication, and at the same time it is a good way to send money. A sheet calling for amounts from one cent to $3 has been prepared which on the payment of one cent and the amount to be sent, will bo torn off about the sanio as an exprefs order. There will be no writing on it by the postmaster, the sender endorsing il as a check or draft. The government guarantees its safe transportion. It is tin light that the new system will be used extensively by senders of small amounts. The postmaster al Crawfordsvillo has not yet received notice or supplies.
The Rockville Fair.
The Kockville Fair is this week and the prospect is good for a successful exhibition. The political days are attracting great attention in the countySam Small appears for the Prohibitionists on Wednesday W. It. Myers, candidate for Secretary of State, and Brookshire for the Democrats, on Thursday, and the Hon. Joseph G. Cannon, of Illinois, for the Republicans, on Friday. The county has been thoroughly billed by all the parties and big crowds are confidently expected by all the political managers. The Vandalia gives a round trip rale of SI.20 from here.
Served Him Eight.
On last Saturday evening a man in this city came to tlio conclusion that he was the proper person to thresh his wife. Ho proceeded to perforin his task, but very soon found out that his wife was the person to give him a terriblo poitnding. She gave him a threshing that ho will never forget, and he now knows who "rules the roost." He nursed his wounds all day yesterday in order to be able to work to day. A few more such women will be a blessing to the community. A man who undertakes to thresh his wife should be beaten half to death.
Condition of Mit Galey.
Mit Galoy's mind is coming around all right, lie attended the sal.) of Howard Smith the day he was taken ill, and now ho can remember all about this, and with whom he had talked. lie complained to several persons there of being so warm, and laid down in the barn upon some hay. lie also remembers of starting to the barn to milk tho cow, but does not remember of entering tho barn There seems to be but little doubt but what he was overcome with heat.
Suit on a Note.
.lohn N. liays has entered suit against Win. II. Urown for $1,000. It is al legeil that on May (!, 1879, I'atsey liays, wife of .T. N. Hays, of Ladoga, loaned Urown §780, he giving a note payable one day after date, with 5 per cent, interest. Mrs. Hays iB r.ow dead and suit'is brought for the face of the note, and what interest remains unpaid.
A Dog Stolen.
Frank Gill, of Lndoga, has reported to the police that he had a valuable dog stolen from him last Saturday and on investigation it was found that a man catno to this city having a dog answering tho description of tho missing ani mal. This man got off tho train at Covington, having tho dog in his pos session.
Off for an Outing.
Thin niorning a merry party left this city for a trip, taking in the Gler.ns at Blooiningdale, the Shades and Pino Hills, returning to this city to-morrow ovening. In tho party woro A. 15. Anderson and wife, Prof. King and wife, lir. Ristine and wife and Hen Crane and Misses Mary Campbell, Mary Thomson nnd Lillio Blair.
