To tl\p KdltorTho Jourr.ul. To satisfy the minds of some of those self-tuitde men, 1 outers around town, who have not done a day's work to my knowledge since I came to town 12 years ago, I will nny to them through THE JOUKSAII not. to Use nny sleep about where I got the money to pay my way through the Southerland Institute* It did not cost them one cent nnd if thnt man who wonldn't disgrace himself by going there to be cured like man will come to me I will give him $2 to start the list to rnise money enough to pay his way. Then he cnn go to work nnd clothe and feed hie children and stop his broken hearted wife from washing to support him in idleness nnd drunkenness. I say come on, my dear friend, and go with uie. I won't kick you down. I will tnke you by the liund itnd lend you to the Sontherland Institute which is situated about one mile south of town on Elm street.
There you will find large, tine building, surrounded by a beautiful pine grove and all kmds of fruits. Come with me, denr friend, nnd will not feel disgust to go with you and give yon nn introduction to tho proprietors, Messrs. Sutherlin Riddle. You will find them nice gentlemen and will moot you half way, and if your case is not hopeless they will, inside of three weeks, send you homo a sober man, whether you hnve principle or not. Now, my dear friends, about the money matter, the Government gave it to me for shooting at just such men as you, nnd Uncle rinm will gire ns more soon and I will give 82 to help you ont for I bear ill will to no one. My dear friend, don't get angry at this letter. I have only nnswered yonr question where I got money. For twenty long years I traveled the same rond yon are traveling now, nnd not lees thnn $1,000 went for drink each yenr, whiih would be 320,000 thnt it has cost me to drink. I went to the Southerland
Institute and gave them $75 and they made me quit drink. I say, my friend they will do you the same way, if yon don't be disgraced by going. It is no disgrace to be seen on the streets drunk it is no disgrnce to go home drunk and knock and oufT your wife nnd children around. But it would be awful to have yon disgraced by going out there, Hoping you will profit by this letter and put your mind to rest about where I got the money to pay my way I bid yon God speed. When yon are ready to take the cure I will give you $2 and go with you and won't tell any one where you got the money. Wishing you all the good luck ou can have I remain, yours truly, B. F. LANE.
Engagement Kings.
An enterprising New York jeweler has struck the key note of success. Every one of the recent graduates of Wabash college and perhaps of every other institution in the country is just in receipt of a circular advertising engagement rings. The jeweler states that he thinks the young gentlemen are in position to use them in their business, and acting upon this belief he takes advantage to offer them the finest line of engagement rings ever set before the eyes of man at the lowest cash prices. Rings of all kinds and value are offered and the boys aro urged to get them as soon as possible and relieve the speculation of an anxious public—to raise the pressure as it were. The mail clerks report that an unusually largo mail for a New York jeweler has worried them lately arid it is positively known that three of last June's graduates have re ceived during the last few days mysterious little boxes with pink cotton slicking out of the cracks.
