The Father of Many Ills.
Constipation leads to a multitude of physicial troubles. It is generally the result of carelessness or indifference to the simplest rule of health. Eugene McKay, of Bradford, Ont., writes: "I had for yonrs leen a sufferer from constipntion, had taken grent many different remedies, some of which did me good for time but only for a time, then my trouble cnnie back worse than ever. I was induced by friond whom Brandretli's pills had benoflted to try them. Took two each night for week, then one each night for six weeks. Sinco that time I have not experienced the slightest difficulty, and my bowels move regularly every day. I firmly believe that for sluggishness of the bowels, and biliousness Brandreth's 1'illB are far perior to nny other."

Hour Is Back.
Hong Guav, tho genial "washer wasliee," is back from a visit to China. While in the cclestial land he was married and transacted some other tritlling business. Ifo did not bring Mrs. Hong back with him but left her at homo with her feet tied up in rags to keep them nice and small. Hong will not go baok for porno years, not until ho has acquired great riches Enough, in fact, to buy a Chinese palaco with a whole regiment of gaily painted Chinese gods. Then ho and Mrs. Hong will put on nl tho dog imaginable and entertain the whole section at their very pleasant rodent feasts. llong is about tho most enterprising Chinaman that over struck tho town and it is safe to say that when ho leaves he will t.ako back a whole bag full of daddy dollars.
ON A STRIKE.
The Monon Section Men Go Out This Moraine for Higher Waees. Section bosses Halpin and Tobin are silting down in the shade near the Monon station, while their salary like Tennyson's brook goes on forever. They are willing to work and have no kick coming but their subordinates are out on a strike for higher wages. The strike is pretty general along tho road south of here, but it lacks organization. The strikers are not combined and can hardly hope to successfully cope with tho road HB they are. Section men receive $1.10 a day and tho Crawfordsville strikers want their wages raised to 81.25. At somo of tho other towns tho men want 81.35 and at others 81.40. It is said that the road will ofi'er a sort of a compromise schedule on August 1st,but there iB no authentic statement to this effect. There is only about a dozen strikers bore in Crawfordsville and none of them are displaying theeg tlags and anarchy. -Altogether it is a pretty tame strike.
The Olevelandtanffreformclub. 1 ue weather was very warm last evening, so when the court house bell had been rung several times and the Democratic club had been called to order in the court room it was found that there were only 7G9 Democrats present. .Tedge Jeenis Selltir was booked for a speecht the committee on constitution was exjwcted to make a report, and a largo keg of beer was expected to tie opened but it was found to bo too warm for anything except tlio last peico of busi" ness. After tho call to order there wore loud cries of "Seller!" but a number misunderstanding tho cry made a stam pede for the basement, evidently under tho impression that tho aforementioned keg was there. The Jiulge finally arosei however, and presented a most dignified nppearanco, being jauntily attired in a melted Bliirt and overalls. Tho shirt was quite docollete and a glimpse of this volumptuous beauty's snowy bosom was presented ns ho arose and said "Friends and follow citizens: Owing to the MclCinloy bill wo are oppressed by the hottest weather wo have endured for years. It has caused death and deso lation in our midst and still men— rather let me say—the basilisks of mo nopoly—have the audacity to call it "protection." When will this oppression cease? (loud applause and cry of "boor") Let us unfurl our cold wave Hags and march forth (o victory and free trade in icebergs. That's all I've got to say. It's ns hot as —."
Just here tho band started up the inspiring strains of "Happy days down on tho farm," and the voice of the speaker was drowned out by the noise and perspiration which lloated tho entiro audience down stairs aB they clung to chairs and other objects that would flout. A few hundred "floators" who wore present didn't need any chairs and enjoyed the deluge hugely. The committeo on constitution did not report and the club will not meet ag'un for two weeks, when it is hoped the hot weathor plank of the Mclvinley Bill will have relaxed its rigor.

Last evening she sent word to the police that if they would undo the bolts of her cell "at tho jail that she would depart for her homo in LaFayette with all haste. Mayor Bandel hoard her plea and ordered her released on tho condition named. When Bessie again breathed the air of freedom she lifted up her voice nnd sworo a large number of palo blue Bwears against the Mayor, the police, the W. C. T. U. and all in ^authority. She made so much noise that tho police felt it incumbent upon them to clnb her a few rounds and drove her out over the fill. It Was Suicide.
There seems to bo no doubt but that tho doatli of John McCain on tho Clover Lenf near Linden yesterday wns a do libornlo suicide. He frequently had boon heard to declare that life was not worth living, and only last Saturday ho staled to the Now Richmond barber that he would bo found along the railroad cut to pieces some fine morning.
Yesterday after his mangled remains had been taken on to New Richmond, Joe Oliver, farm hand, found some big tones and pieces of flesh which had not lieen picked up. He placet! these on tlio ties of tho railroad and they wore still lying there at last accounts.

Saved by the Department.
The fire department saved Crawfordsville from a big firo loss last night by a timely response to an alarm. About ono o'clock Mr. Holloway, of the firm of Woodruff .V Ilolloway, photographers in the third story of tlio Fink-MeClelland block block on east Main street, discovered smoke issning from a room used to storo rags and boxes in. He yelled the alarm ont 'of tho front window and Policeman Ol Gill who happened to bo passing, immediately notified Chief Dorsov. Water was on tho firo in less than five minutes and the ilames quenched, not howevor boforo the water had soaked down through the first and socond stories. Woodruff .V Holloway's loss will be about §000 with no insurance. Hilly Rapjwrt's cigar factory was sprinkled and he will lose several cases of tobacco, all fully insurod. Mike Callahan's saloon Buffered the partial los.. of a pool table, fully insured in tho London Lancashire. The building is owned by l'hillip ^Fink and Mrs. Dr. McClcllnn, but tho loss is mostly on Mr. Fink's part. Ilis loss nmonnting to about SI00 however, is fully covered by insurance in tho Gorman, of Peoria. Mrs. McC'lellan'B part is insured in the North American nnd Liverpool, London and Globe. Repairs are being made to-day and by evening tho roof will bo covered.

Thinks Dynamiters Did It.
"I do not believe the stink factory a responsible for the death of the fish between it nnd Troutman's," said Judge Snyder this morning. In my opinion dynamiters are responsible for tho wholesale and shameful slaughter. There is nothing about the factory lo poison tho fish and on the contrary it furnishes them food. Dynamiters did the work and are no doubt doing it. right nlong."

Mrs. Devaugh canio rushing down tho stairs of McClcllnn block this morning with a satchel and reaching the side walk disappeared in the east. Mrs. Devaugh is tho wife of tho proprietor of tho north Uroon street shooting galleiv and for tlio jiast few days sho lias been making things lively. Early this morning she sent for ofiieer (irimes and poured into his oar a most harrowing tale. She said her husband had abused her and Hint she was afraid for her life, ho having threatened to kill her. She wished, sho said, to soil her goods and thus raise onough money to take her back to her relations in Now York State. Mr. Orimes told her that the police would protect her from violence, but could hardly find a market for her goods. He then left and very soon Mrs. Dovuagh left also in the startling manner described. She haB skipped tho town and it is only too evident that an insane person is IOOBO in the world. For some time BIIO has evinced unmis takable signs of insanity and her husband has been trying to raiso tho money to send her homo, ller report to the police of his wishing to kill her is probably a creature of her diseased imagination. Her present whereabouts are not known but she is supposed to have left on the Rig Four for tho east.
