I'. Ramsey and Supt. McAlevy, of the r'iwforiisville gas line, were In re Wednesday consulting our people with reference to taking stock in the gas line and also to see our city Council in regard to the right of way through our streets. A m.-eting was held at. the bank and tho object unfoldiil by Mr. Ramsey. Darlington was struclf hard for stock, only S7,001). While Darlington wants gas, and is willing to pay the Ornwfordsville rales, and take a reasonable amount of stock, it is very doubtful about its willingness to buy the plant. However, let -every effort bo made to raise the desired sum, and if il can lie seenred well and good if not, we are no worse off than liefore. Wo hardly believe that A. I1'. Ramsey would champion or lend his influence'to a scheme that would swindle or defraud his neigli bors, friends and constituents. Tho only feature that we see wrong is the asking of this people to pay that amount.—Dm lint/tun
Darlington has no ground to object, and is, in fact, asked to subscribe but a small amount. 'I'he stock received for the money is gilt edge and even if il
were given as a boniiB the gaB would
bo worth that much to the town.

Blefld His Eye.
'l'he Waveland /mfcpcinfi'iif has the following additional facts in regard to Dr. Steele, which are rather interesting: "Lately, he entered into au agreement to go to Australia to introduce the Keeley treatment, at a salary of 85,500, ami last week "started to Chicago to make the tinal arrangements. Rut on the way up he got with a gang of the worst element to IH found, and was soon started on a spree. This is his own story, lie says he has 110 appetite for drink, but after getting with this kind of company he carried the carousal as far as any of tlieui. llis actions disgusted those who had been his friends here through all his former scrajieB. On Friday he received a notice from ]ersonal friends," giving him twenty-four hours to leave the town and stay away, or take the consequences. He left on Saturday and according to the CUAWFounsviT.i.K or UNA 1., went to Darlington, where he occupied the saloon until losed out, and then slept on tho curbstone till tho north-bound Sunday train arrived, which he boarded. Nothing has been hoard of him since. There is not a particle of sympathy felt for Steele here at his home, as most people consider his downfall to be of his own choice, or rather total lack of nionhood. Drink is only one of his vices, and could now be controlled if lie hud moral courage enough to shake his bad associates, lie is in bad physical condition and can not long survive such dissipation. Steele returned hero Wednesday evening with the same old jag. lie threatened to kill two or three persons whom he sus pected of "writing him up" for the
Cu.\wFoitDHVILLE JoritXAL, nnd swore that if he was molested by "white caps" he would burn the town."
OanTbey Sell?
The much talked of sale of the Rattle Ground north of Lafayette, says Dr. Clearwaters, is mostly unwarranted The grounds (ire now owned by a board trustees, they having made the pur chase from the Northwest Conference of the M. E. church with the provision that the grounds be used for nothing other than that for which they were originally designed. There was, however, a question submitted to the trustees asking the amount that would buy the grounds. The proposed purchase was made by a committee who are interested in iiaving the soldiers' home located there. From the nature of the deed the present stock company has— in that it states that it shall never be used for any other pur pose than for which it was first de signed—it is questionable whether they can make a legal transfer of the property. The above was furnished this paper by one who lias had connection with the organization for the past fifteen years.
Billing the Oounty.
This morning the bill car of Sells brothers' great circus arrived in town from Lebanon and with a force 22 men at once began to bill the comity nnd city. The show is a first class one in every respect and the menagerie iB the best in tho country. It has no spectac ulur performance as has Uarnuin but the circus and menagerie are, of en much superior. The- performance will be given hero on Saturday, August 13,
Stowe, the press agont, is one of the oldest in tLe country nnd when last here was with Rarnum. He was a personal friend of the late Rayless Uanna during his life time nnd was for two years tho law school as a classmate of Grover Cleveland. Ho is an old hand at the business nnd tho most exjierienced press agent in tho country.
A Night Blooming Ooreus. Mrs. Fanny Kahn is tho jioHsoBsor of magnificent specimen of the night blooming cereus plant. Tho plant which stands in hor yard is fully eight feet in height and this season held twelvo buds. The fimt of these burst last night and presented a beautiful sight. There were hundreds of pn white [letals of a most delicate texture surrounding a magniflcont bunch pale yellow Btamens from tho center of which shot tl magnificent pistil of most curious ahape. The llower was much larger than a water-hliy and exhaled a most delicious, though heavy perfume, which was quite noticenble for Homo feet about it. The next bud expected to open alxiut to-morrow night

A poorly clad woman appeared lie fore Mayor Handel this morning with a sad story. She is the wife of a man now camping in tho valley who last night got on a lieastly drunk and kicked her out of tho tent beating her most cruelly. A Neat Scheme.
The Logansport Pharos, the Demo- I cratic organ of CIISB county, gloats with ghoulish glee oyer a method its editor has discovered for defeating tho Australian election law nnd buying votes. As it will be generally used by the I un terrified this fall the system is here givon: The purchaser provides himself with a legal ticket either by getting it from a lot secured from the printing office or from some election official. Or voter having learned t-lie size nnd [nality of the paper goes in with 11 blank sheet nnd receiving a genuine ticket puts it in his pocket and folds up and offers the blank sheet after coming from the booth. The initials of the lerks are missing but the Board has no right to look at tho supposed face of the ticket and are compelled by law to burn the supposed ballot as defective and to give the voter another one. This he votes and retires with a good ticket I properly indorsed by the clerks in his pocket.
Whatever tho method, the ticket Becured and the purchaser of votes is I ready for business. Ho retires to a private room, a half mile from the polls, if necessary, nnd the purchaseable voters are sent to him one at a time, lie I stamps the tioket obtained nnd gives it to liis first man telling him to go and vote it and bring bnck tho clean ticket he gets from tlieBonrdand will pny him for it. This is kept up nil day and there being no possibility of outside discovery nnd the buyer and seller be- I ing equally guilty the facts cannot liecome public.
A Great i'rog Hunt.
Tip Davis, Giff Ridge, 01 Gill, and John Snyder were tho heroes of a groat frog hunt last night. They took in alwut half mile of the crook nnd I succeeded in bagging 110 large frogs. These after lieing dressed made over 180 pounds of choice meat. This is the bigget-t catch yet noted.
$100 Iteward $100.
The readers of this paper will lie pleased to learn that there is ono dread ed disease that science has been able to I cure in all its stages and that is Catarrh. Hull's Catarrh Cure is the only positive I cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment.
Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, I acting directly on the blood and mucout surfaces of tho system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, nnd giving the patient strength by building I up the constitution nnd assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors I have so much faith in its curative power that they offer One Hundred Dollnrs for any case that it fails to cure. Solid for list of Testimonials.
