Reducing Fares,
The Pennsylvania lines last night announced another cut in Chicago rates. On the 22d the comjiany will begin selling tickets to Chicago for §3.75 one way, or $7.50 for the round trip, nnd a six-dollar rate between Louisville and Chicago. General l'assenger Agent Ford says that this is done because competing lines are abusing mileage-book agreements. In self protection the other lines will come to tlio same rates. The Monon will bo affected among other lines nnd a cheap rate will likely be established on this line.

Charley's Cliunis.
Saturday's CrawfordBvillo papers gave an nccount of how twolvo couples of Cliff Dwillers drove to Ladoga Friday evening and surprised Charley Goodbar and wife, members of the outing club, but tho reporters failed to get tho best part of tho story. On Friday a message was sent to (}. E. GriineH to ask if Charley's folks would be at home, and stating that a party wished to surprise him. The [Mitlcr man had an ongagemont with Goodbi.r for thnt evening to catch minnows for next day's fishing. 11^ was informed of the threatened attack and arranged matters accordingly. The minnow catching was postponed until after supper, and then Charley, dressed in his oldest clothes, was taken on a drive of four miles to the brook When there, he divested himsolf of al' but his underclothing, and, screened by a dense willow thicket, proceeded to Bailie for "shiners." When he had finished ho took otT the wet undersnit, nnd put on ton-cent straw hat, dirty calico shirt, raggoil pants and worn out shoes with no socks. The drive homeward was soon made. The surprise was complete. Tho Crawfordsville paoplo had brought plenty of refreshments, including a flvo gallon can of ice cream, and Goodbar, half clothed and with chattering teeth, ate his share. lie was so much excited that ho even forgot to put on a coat or lace up his shoes.—Ladoga teatkr.

llev. Jncobs arrived in the city this morning nnd states that he is still a good Democrat nnd will stump the State for Cleveland this Fall. lie doesn't like some of his local brothren, however, as the following communication bears witness: ['0 i.liu Editor the Journal.
The Star of July 20, says that Justice McQilliard is a Democrat and that politics is not in the case. Both statements are false. Justice McQilliard is nn honorablo, honest, Btraight llepnblican and belongs to the Christian church. The ArjuK-i\'ews of July 20, whose very fastidious and over-nice young man found Rev. (if Rev. should be applied to Jacobs) lying under the shade of a tree in the court yard, heard him say Ujiit Jacobs was up to help McMullen make out an ailidavit, and that the Rev. had experienced a change of mind, bus but little regai for statements.

Gentlemen, we shall know whether the good people of Whitesville will np prove of the tone and sontiment ot the Democratic press in this county, nnd whethoi they will approve of the actions of some of the officials. Please remember that men can do as they please when they are in the booths stamping names and one more thing that you should not forget, there are more independent voters to-day than at any other time nnd it takes no strong mind to grasp tho fact that if a people will disturb one man's homo, that people could easily be worked up to destroy another man's homo. Disrespect of law and order mny become habit.
Now will the fastidious young man please tell me what property is worth in Whitesville? Has it increased in value of late? Let me ask yon ono moro question.
