A Pitiful 8tory.
Yesterday a m-in of middle age by the Dame of Morgan, who once resided in a little town in Illinois, looking very badly and careworn by trouble and traveling stopped at Now Ross. He told a pitiful story. Three years ago he was a prosperous man residing in a a small town in Illinois and a preacher by profession, surrounded by a happy and loving family. To-day he is a beggar looking for his lost boy. One evening while he was holding a meeting, his family being at home, the mother of the thirteen-year-old boy left him to go nnd see a neighbor. When she returned she found the boy had gone. She gave the alarm but search did not reveal him. The father came homo and since that time has been an aimlessly wandering man in search of his lost boy, spending •piite a fortune in his quest. He is now traveling, begging as ho goes, still hoping to find his lost son. The kind people of New Ross provided him with food and purchased for him a ticket to this city where he duly arrived. The old gentleman seems to be slightly unbalanced.
At Battle Ground.
Several persons went from here yes terday to attend the decoration exer cises at Battle Ground of Tippecanoe yesterday. Five thousand people assembled to decorate the graves of thir-ty-seven soldiers who fell there on Nov. 7, 1811, in the battle fought by Gen. William Henry Harrison with the Indians. This is the first time since the battle that these graves have been strewn with flowers. The ceremony was under the direction of the Tippecanoe Memorial Association, an organization formed for the purposo of securing congressional appropriation for erecting a monument over the graves of these heroeB. Gen. Mnhlon D. Manson, of Crawfordsville, and Septimus Vater, of LaFayette, wore the principal speakers

Cleveland's minstrels, is a Baltimorean, and the last time he was in "Maryland my Maryland," he invited an old time friend to visit the show, and the ancient gentleman followed Barney through the entire performance with much interest—and disgust. After the performance they met, and the friend was askod "How did yon like the show?' "Superb, sab!" retnrced the Colonel, "but ," "But what?" interpolated Fagan. "But that part sail where they all jumped on to you sail, with their razors and clubs." "Oh, that's all in the play" explaimed tho comedian. "It is!" snorted the Colonel, drawing himself to his full height, "then its pretty hard way to earn a living."

A GLORIOUS TIME.
The Rally Saturday Ni^ht Dnparalled In the History of the Race. Crawfordsville quivered with suppressed excitement all day Saturday and the beautiful manner in which that same excitement was kept suppressed during the rally does credit to our citizens. It is a worthy demonstration to the effect that the good people of Crawfordsville can labor under tremendous enthusiasm and excitement and still not BIIOW it. Onr people preserved their dignity and urbanity Saturday night in a most commendable manner. The "drum corpse" drummed and the band played anything it wanted to, the streets were thronged with a surging mass in quest of Sunday groceries and beer, and in front of Fulton Market the aroma of roasted peanuts rose to heaven like sweet incense to the glory of "Clove and
Steve." While all this was going on tho band playing, the crowd surging and tho peanuts roasting—Mr. William Johnston stood pale and calm on the court house steps. Fully thirty-seven people and a dog with a Bore foot had quit "surging" and stood about him as with trembling voice he thus addressed them: "Friends and fellow Swallowtails, we are met to ratify and I ha ye the excruciating pleasure of introducing as our first addresser on this auspicious occasion Hon. Marion E. Clodfelter, attorney for tho Wabash Valley Protective Union." A wild whoop of misery rent the air and three men and the dog began to Burge again, while the deep bass voice of Luther Monroe could be heard on the outskirts of the crowd calling "louder." After an expose of the Republican party and the Doherty's Mr, Clodfelter gathered in his scattered members and sat down with a dull thud while Chairman Billy trotted out the "old wah
hoBS,"
Gon. Mnnson, who
proved conclusively that tho tariff was a tax. Col. Courtney followed with a grand exordium on the merits of Harrison and Cleveland and ended by declaring that either of them would make a good president. Sheriff Bible was about to put him in irons for this declaration but was restrained by G. W. Paul, who hurried to the front to lift tho awful damper which had settled down on the crowd by a fiery speech which burnod 6evorul holes in the ceiling of tho court house porch. James Madison Thompson, more familiarly known among the boys as "Maurice." followed Mr. Paul and dwelt with touching pathoa on the free trade plank of the platform and ably demonstrated its instability. Then oame tho bright star of hope of Coal Creek, the right bower of Bonny Swank, tho champion foot washer of Bristle Bidgo, tho immortal and unimpeachable Mike Foley. Mike was attired in a long Princo Albert coat and black hoBe to match and he stirred 'em up about right. He gavo a short sketch of An drew Jackson nnd closed with a bright peroration eulogistic of Thomas Jeffer son. As a fitting close Mr. Johnston introduced the "groat American diapersor," 'Squire Wright, nnd he had the desired effect. Mr. Johnston was relieved of tho embarassment of dismissing his congregation with a benediction. Two minutes after the 'Squire began the inspired poet of Ripley township "threw off" tho following beautiful linos peculiarly adapted to the scene: "Jim Wright stood ou tlio court hoii.se stops,
Whcncc nil but him liud tk-i!: Tlio light of un old coal oil torch, ^lionc round him o'or the dead,"
