A handsome Pair

Of shoes ought to command handsome price. Sometimes they do and sometimes they do not, aud here's a casein which they don't. We are selling oi $3 shoe for $2. If the price was as handsome as the shoe it would be just about twice the money, and the shoe wouldn't be very dear at that. The whole story isn't told when it is not only called handsome, but phe no-iienally cheap. It wears just well as it looks, it's as easy a shoe as ever gave comfort to the foot and it will hold it's shapliness until you begin to think of buying another pair

Jake and Jim.

It will be remembered that "'c rurally of Elmore in liipley township is diided against itself. The clnns of Juke and Jim nre constantly at war and enough bad blood has been shown, if not actually spilled to have fertilized the farms of the contending hosts. Jake and Jim are brothers, and oft in childhood as they plucked the first wild grapes or robbed birds' nests togother they swore eternal brotherly love for each other, and when the price of candy was high in Alamo they often, in their childish indignation, threatened to start rival town where they grew up and call it New Philadelphia. But all these boyish dreams have oome to naught. Both grew up and married rival belles of the neighborhood and .Tim departed from the straight and narrow path and began to write poetry and appear lefore Democratic conventions in the role of a candidate. That settled it and former lovo was turned to bitter hate. The women folks roasted each other at the church festivals and sewing ciroles right sturdily and Jake and Jim "Bussed" each other every time they passed on the road. It was a sod duty a couple of weeks ago to chronicle their appearance in the police court and the fines then imposed, but again has the sai heart sickening duty been thrust upon

Yeeterdny afternoon Jim appeared before Mayor Carr and swore out a warrant against his brother Jacob for chasing him all over President Harrison's highway with a pitchfork. Jake would have caught him too and have gigged him like a luckless channel cat fish but that he caught on a barbed wire fence. Jim wants to have Jacob treated to a dose of the law and the warrant is now out.

•He iDefended Quitear..

In the village of Cedar Lake, near Knox, the county seat of Starke county, lives quietly a man whose name ten years ago was on everybody's lips household word. To-day, no one ever hears of him. A lawyer, he won world wide notoriety by a single case, upon which during all its length was rivited tho breathless attention of a globe. To, doy, with a fair competency gained by his practice, he resides quietly in the little country town in which his modest shingle, flapping in the occasional breeze, tells to the noticing passer by the fact that the little office within occnpied by "George Scoville, Attorney-Bt-law and Notary Public." Very few who pass the cultured, refined looking gentleman on the street—very few even of his clients—know that he worked long and faithful in a hopeless cause— an endeavor to Bave from ignominious death upon the gallows his wife's own brother, Charles Jules Quiteau, the slayer of the martyred president, GurSeld.—Lotjanxport Pharos.

The City's Drainage.

Engineer McConnell has just com, pleted the putting in of 25 bench marks and now hns the drainage of the city down ton fine point. The highest point is at the southeast corner at the jnnction where the altitude is 798 feet above the sea level. From this point the drainage of the city is decidedly toward the northwest. Dne west from the junction the fall at the western city limit is to 764 feet while to the north west corner the fall ib to G95 feet, a fall of over 100 feet. Mr. McConnell thinks that, when a system of sewerage is put in the main sewer should run east and west on Market Btreet and the branch sewers empty into thiB from the south, The main sewer should run down La Fayette avenue and finally turning al most west empty into tho creek near the old slaughter houso. The portion of the city wost of Walnut could be car ried into the main sewer somewhere along the avenue by means of the pres ent sewer which drains portion of the western].

To School Teachers.

The State Board of Education has made tho following order in regard the literary wo^k in the county exami nation: That the use of Hoimes' Auto crat of the Breakfast Table le deferred until February, '93. That for the months of June, July and August, '92, no literary review nor examination upon any literary work be required in the county examination. That questions be prepared for the months of September, October and November upon Evangeline, and for December '92, and January '93, upon Snow Bound. The directors of tho Indiano teachers' reading cirnle will not prepare the usual list of one hundred questions for the September examination.

After the Convention.

Indianapolis ia going to make a great effort to secure the national convention of the Y. P. S. G. E. (or next year. It would be a great advantage for all members of the Crawfordsville aooietiea if the state capital should be successful. This morning's Journal says in regard to the effort being put forth:

Active stepa are now being taken by the local organization, aided by the Commercial Club, to secure for this city nest year the national convention al the Y.P. 9. 0. E. Last evening a meeting of the executive committee of the looal organization was held at the Central Christian ohuroh to consult and formulate plans toward the end stated. Between forty and fifty were present at the meeting last evening.

A oommittee was appoii^ted consisting of Dr. Iiondthaler, Y. C. Kendall, 8. L. goode, W'illard MoGuire. E. F. Clifford, Miss Jennie Masson, Mrs. Whitlock and Elizabeth WiBhard, whioh will meet this afternoon with Secretary Fortune and the committee on assemblages of the Commercial Club, to consult and take such steps as may be deemed advisable. The Commercial Club has guaranteed a building sufficient to accommodate the assembly. The national convention of the Y. P. S. 0. E. was held last year at Minneapolis, and fifteen thousand visitors were in attendance. This year it will be held at New York and even a larger attendence than last year is anticipated. It the convention comes to Indianapolis next year it is estimated' that it will bring to this city twenty-five thousand visitors. A point in favor of Indianapolis is the fact that the World's Fair will then be in full blast, and visitors can at. tend both the convention and the Coluui bian Exposition.*

Mr. Mount Talks.

There has been muoh talk of Senator J. A. Mount for second place on the Republican State ticket and he is yet regarded as a strong possible. In recent correspondence with the Sun, he said "Neithor by my authority or permission has my name been mentioned in connection with any office. My name will not be presented to the state convention for any place on the state tioket. I will take some part in the canvas this fall, but not in the expectation of political honors or the emoluments of office, but for the success of the principles that I believe to be most conduoive to the good of the whole people. While I am a farmer and have labored earnestly for the promotion of agriculture, I do not seek the advancement of any class to the detriment of others. The greatest good to the greatest number should be the ultimatum of all legislation, keeping constantly in mind that wealth is created bjrlfibor, and whatever promotes, honors and dignifies labor augments a nation's greatness."

Everybody Is Going.

Several persons who desired to attend the Ft. Wayne convention, have made inquiry of the Central Committee for "proxies." All have been informed that there are no "proxies" left. The three or four delegates who could not go quickly found alternates and from the present prospects this county will not only aend a full set of delegates to Fort Wayne but a large number of other persons beside. It is going to be a great convention and Fort Waone will have to hustle to accommodate it.
