A Handsome Pair

Of shoos oujjht to command a handsome price. Sometimes they do and sometimes they do not, and here's a casein which they don't. We are selling oi & shoe for $j. If the price w«is as handsome as the shoe it would he just about twice the money, and the shoe wouldn't be very dear at that. The whole story isn't told when it is not v,only called handsome, but phe nomenaily cheap. It wears just well as it looks, it's as easy a shoe as ever ^ave comfort to the foot and it will hold it's shapliness until you begin to think of buying another pair

Children's Day.

The exercises of Children's Day were observed at the Methodist church yes terday morning in a very pretty and ap propriate manner. The audience room was decorated with unusual tasto and very elaborate as well. The children taking part in tho exercises wore well drilled aud executed there parts with great credit. At the conclusion a very nice collection was taken to aid in carrying on the work.

A Receiver for the Midland. Recently a number of tho claims were filed in tho Boone County Circuit Conrt against the Indiana Midland railroad and a petitiion was also filed for tho ap pointmont of a receiver. A change of venue was taken to this county. This morning .Tudgo Brown allowed several of tho claims and appointed Donzilia Rice receiver. Rico gnvo a temporary bond of 810,000 which will be increased as soon as the court learns the condition of the road and the stratus of atTairs. Indianapolis News.

The Messrs. Sullivan Debate. The Sullivan boys were in it up to their necks Saturday night and the bright incandescent lighte in Peter's saloon mado the spectacle all tho more edifying. Mr. Mike Sullivan and Mr. 'Jud" Sullivan had, it seems, a slight misunderstanding. Their usually soft and mellow voices wore soon raised to a pitch equalled only by locomotives when cows get to decorating the tracks in front of them, and as a fitting climax to the argnment and as a sort of clincher, as it wore, Mr. Miko smoto Mr. Jud a blow on the noHo which rendered that delicate organ as Hat as tho boom of David Bennett Hill. This clincher wns followed up by forty or fifty moro and when the merry Michael had ceased Jud was so convinced of tho error of his way that ho made no response save feeble groan of absolute conviction Mike was arrested to-day and settled with the Mayor.

Gen. Wallace on the Untlook. Gen. Lew Wallace is in the city, guest at tho Bates House. Even strangers to Indiana observe that Gen, Wallace is possessed of a striking per sonality. He is of medium height, heavy Bet, has dark, shaggy eyebrows, hair tinged with gray and a massive forehead. Of late years ho haB dabbled quite extensively in politics and, went to Minneapolis in the interest of Presi dent Harrison* In delineating the status of political affairs to a Sun re porter, Friday ovening, he said: "So far as I know, tho nomination of President Harrison is giving perfect satisfaction. Before the delegates op posed to him at the convention departed nineteen twentieths of them expressed an avowed determination of supporting the ticket. For instance, tho Blaine club of Cincinnati, on the evening after the nomination, as they were marching to their train, wheeled into line before the Indiana headquarters and gave three hearty cheers for Harrison and Ried. The Fort Wayne opposition baa also declared for the ticket, as has Mr. Piatt and Mr. Clarkson. The result is that the Republican party enters the campaign a united, well organized, aggressive force. Although I should certainly regret it, yet if a Democrat must be elected Cleveland would give the best satisfaction. I don't think it is the consensus of opinion that he's a great statesman, but he is an honest man.

If the election were left to our English cousins, Cleveland would undoubtedly le successful, but, as it is a contest distinctly American, I have an abiding faith in the re-election of Harrison."— Indianapolis Sun.

FAMOUS HUNTERS.

Mm Who Sin Might? Animal* with I^ancM* In Sig. Gcssi's "Seven Years In the Soudau" tho author describes "the brothers Duma," two hunters "renowned from Kaka to the Viotorla Nyanza." They -were In the habit of killing the buffalo, the rhinoceros and the leopard—the fiercest animals of the country—with no more emotion than a European would experience In shooting rabbits. They were often sent for from different parts to kill some lion which was doing great mischief. Of their ele-phant-hunting the author says:

In all the villages the brothers found an enthusiastio 'welcome, the people knowing that wherever they were meat was never wanting. Both men were Rtrong-lirabed and of uncommon agillty.

When an elephant rushed upon them they calmly awuited him, and at tho right moment leaped to ono side. Tho elephant, not being able to stop, turned toward ono of tho two brothers and the other plunged a lance Into his side. The animal then quitted tho first man and fell upon the one who had wounded him, and at that instant, tho other cut the tendons of tho hind legs, bringing the elephant to the ground.

One day, however, one of the brothers was near falling a victim to his boldness. lie attacked an elephant alone in the usual way, but stumbled and fell. Ho rose directly, bat the elephant had already seized him in his trunk, and hurled him to a distance of fifteen feet. Fortunately ho fell in the middle of a thick bush, and escaped with some scratches and bruises.

His friends laughed at the accident, and tho next day he said: "I would rather cat my wife seven times than not take my revenge*" lie set out again, refusing tho company of his brother. Late In tho evening he returned and called tho village together. "Come," ho said, "help me bring in the tusks, and take as much meat for yourselves as you Mm."

All the population followed him. Qo had killed nine huge elephants.
