A SYSTEM OF SEWERAGE. The next, groat tMiterjirieu that the city shoulil enter upon is a thorough and eoinjiU'tc eVBtem of Beverage. The services of a competent and exjieriencetl sanitary engineer should be secured to make sewerage survey of the city and nil the sewerage put in from time to tune should lie coustruetod according to this survey. With thin map and plnnB any local ngiiieer could work to it without difficulty. That the necessity exists for a system of sanitary drainage there can be no two opinions. It must lie conceded that danger lurks in every household, and in an hour when we think not, an epidemic will sweep over the town, either of diphtheria, or typhoid fever, or both, aud rob many families of their jewels. What is the coat of prevention to be compared with the loss of some loved one? An occasional case of diphtheria or typhoid fever is but a danger signal, a signal that shonld warn the people of death at their doors. The poisonous gases fron the vaults and cesspools permeate the earth, and not only affect the water we drink but the atmoHphere we breath.
And the older the town the worse it becomes ir. this respect. The time ha* arrived in our history that some vigorous measures must be taken for sanitary protection. The City Council Bhonld at once lake some steps with a view to complete system of sewerage. Just now this is more important than any impruvoment the Fathers hove in contemplation. TIIK JIri:NAr. would therefore urge upon .those in authority to make a thorough investigation of this important subject. An investigation, we are sure, will load to practical results.
It. A. Cos.siut, formerly State Li lirarian, and a gentleman with an exextensive acquaintance throughout the State, will be before the Republican State Convention as a candidate for Chief of the Bureau of Statistics. He has some statistical experience and is in every way qualified for the positionBesides ho was a private soldier in the Gth Indiana regiment, was severely wounded at Chickaiimtign, taken prisoner nnd endured months of starvation at Liibby nnd Anderson. lie certainly is deserving.
