The Bulldozing Committee. Yesterday afternoon about four o'clock when tlio court house was well nigh deserted, a queer looking combination of legal lights might have been seen slipping through the corridors. This combination WHS queer as to makeup and as to mission. The mission of the worthy coterie was to go to Judge Harney and tell him what ho "owed" to the Democratic party as Judge of the circuit court. They wanted to tell him that it was his duty by the parly to remove a competent court reporter, when these men very well knew that there was not another person in the county who could begin to be capable of filling the placo, which requires so groat accuracy and experience. These men were closeted with Judge Ilarney piite a while and it is very easy to fancy what transpired in that room. When they came out one of them said the Judge hadn't decided as yet what he would do. Ft is safe to predict, however, that ho will treat the demand with the contempt it deserves. He could not have been blamed had he lined and jailed the whole gang for contempt of court.

THE JOURNAL is in receipt of an invitation from the Mayor of Ocosta, Washington, with the compliments of Capt. l'\ D. Huestis, to attend the centennial celebration of the discovery of Gray's Harbor by Capt. Gray, which was observed on May 7. Ocosta is tha most westerly terminus of a railroad line in the United States. The line was recently built by Captain Huestis from Tacoma lo Ocosta, the latter place being a city platted before the completion of the railroad, and in which the Cap tain is largely interested. With its fine harbor facilities it promises to become one or the leading cities of the Pacific coast. Rather Entertaining,

Mrs. Laura Doherty, wife of a Crawfordsville capitalist, was fined 31 and costs in the pclice court this morning on a charge of assaulting her mother, Mrs. Kwinff, at her home, 48 north New Jersey street Saturday evening. The ovidenco showed that Mrs. Doherty, who i.s addicted to drinking to excess, scratched her mother on the face and kicked' her, in an effort to escape and go jtiggy riding. Mrs. Ewing testified that excesses, had once caused the inirceration of Mrs. Doherty in an insane asylum, and that she had o. ce been treated at the Kedey institute.

Mrs. Doherty is a line looking woman forty, the mother of two children. She has not, lived with her husband for six years.*—/ndiiuKijKilis Xeivn.

As Davy Crockett.

Last evening, at the Arch Street Theatre, Mr. "Frank Mayo began an engagement in his well-known original tjiiaractor "Davy Crockett," ir. Murdock's

Idyl of the Backwoods." The theatre was crowded with an enthusiastic audience who applauded the sentiment and tho action of the piece to tho echo. Tho troupe, as a whole, iB a strong one. The plot of tho piece is very simple, the entire interest centering in Mr. Mayo'a acting af his part which, physically, is a decidedly muscular one, and adapted to display his fine figure to advantage. The quiet force of hi$ delivery is highly effective, and in marked contrast to the ranting which is apt to characterize actors of tho sensational school.—1'hil'iilrlphhi Kreniinj Teleyrujilt.

GEORGE ARTHUR'S EXPERIENCE,

He Has a Narrow Escape from Death at Terre Hauto, The Terre Haute Express this morning contains the following account of ilie experience of George Arthur, late of this city, which will prove interesting to his many friends and acquaintances here: "Yesterday morning when the base ball streamer at Sixth and Main stroets was being drawn in, a telephone wire was broken and fell across the street car trolly wire and then extended to the ground. Mr. George H. Arthur, piano tuner of the Baldwin musio house, was coming east on Main street and the knee of lfis horse struck the wire before he knew what was the trouble. The horse tell upon the wire breaking the shaft of the buggy in falling. Mr. Arthur at the time the horse struck the wire, also received a shock, the lines being wet and conducting the current to him. A telephone man soon arrived and attempted to draw the lino away with a ropo and received a shock that knocked him down. Mr. Frank GoBnell then secured an ax and cut the wire, thus destroying tho current. It was five minutes before tho connection was destroyed and by this time tho horse was dead. Mr. Arthur said the value of the horse was $200. Mr. Gosnoll says that he ran out into tho street and cried to Mr. Arthur to stop, but that eithor he did not hear him or paid no attention to his cry."
