A Poor Amusement.
For some time past the farmers living northwest of the city havo been bothered by having their dogs shot after night by persons driving up to the fences and shooting them down in thoir yards. Saturday night Henry Hughes was aroused by the murder of his valuabl dog and running out and mounting his horse was soon in hot pursuit of the wrong doers. After quite a chase overtook tht in atul forced a settlement. The dog killers Vere two well known young men who should have been it better Impiin'RC.

The following letter to Tim .Tocunai. from Will 11. llo'rnbiiker will prove of interest in this city and demonstrates that Crawfordsville talent is still at the front: .lol.li'T. Ill: May 7, ISO'i. Til the Will county rhetorical contest held in Jdliet. last night. Miss 'elli Houghton, one of my pupils in the Kast Wheatland sehoole, won the first prize, a beautiful old medal. Her selection was "The Royal Archer," by Maurice Thompson. The second prize was won by Miss Lillie Parsons, of Braidwood, who spoke ''Tin Chariot Race," from Ben Hur. Their markings were 135i and 135, respect ively, out of a possible 150. The fi that both selections were written by Crawfordsville authors is rather a remarkable coincidence.

The readers of this ]jajer will be pleased to learn that there is one Dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages and that is Catarrh. Hull's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Mall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of tho d'sease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing it?, work. Tho proprietors I have so much faith in its curative power that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any car.e that it fails to cure. Send for list of Testimonials.

Tough Places.
The attention of the officers of the law is called to tho saloons north of the city •icross Sugar Creek. They are a disgrace to even a low state of morality, and their open violation of the law and disregard for decency calls for police interference. At night these dens of vice resound with tho frenzied howls and lurid songs of drunken reveler* until respectable people fear to ps'ss along the road. On Sunday tie scene is worse. yesterday afternoon tho thoroughfares in front of these places were almost completely blocked with oarriageB and other vehicles in which sat tho most disieputable men of the town and painted, shameless, women, waiting for drinks. It is a disgrace to Montgomery county that these things can be. The bad men who rule these no'sesome roosts should bo driven out of tho community without delay. TLev are a curse to iho very air they breathe, and are doing untold harm to tho citizens of Crawford ville and Montgomery eountv. Drive the rascals out.

WEEDING THEM OUT.
The Police Go After the Deus of Vice Last Evening. Crawfordsville went moral yesterday by quite a large majority with several precincts still to hear from. To begin with the tough element started out in the morning iu a brisk aud sprightly manner and welcomed in tho balmy spring by tapping several fresh kegs of the cool foaming aud throwing stove wood at tho clean fresh faced Sunday school scholars that were passing by with new clothes and hymn books. All the morning gay rippling laughter gurguled up from the north end and right away after dinner vlie little "yaller" surrey and its freight of lovliness started out for a trip of the streets taking soda water and ginger pop at all the leading soda watering places. Several landaus loaded with ducks and drakes of rather shady tints drove furiously over the country scandalizing honest farmers and thoir families. It was a very hilarious occasion and the dear creatures hadn't had as much fun 6lnce their paw paw parties last fall. Of course, when they returned home in the evening the hilarity continued and about tho time Dr. Cunningham was preaching morality officers Ensminger and Grimes were triumphantly establishing it in the north end. Every establishment. in the whole quarter was pulled and a more wos begone, bedraggled procession never filed up to the county jail. Some paid, some staid and some went behind the bars. The men were as a rule as sorry a class as the women but there were one or two uotable exceptions—exceptions which would cause a stir if announced. These victims of circumstance were before
Mayor Carr this morning and received their respective doses. It was a goodly haul and about 25 suffered. The next time the police make a raid of this kind the names of all parties will bo published.
A Charming Entertainment Last night the Wubasli College Glee Club, composed of seven gentlemen and one lady, gave a charming entertainment at the First Presbyterian church to a good sized and appreciative audience. Twelve selections composed the ong'nal programme, but was increased to double the number by encores, th audience not being [satisfied with anything olse. Tho glee club is a fine one, well trained and voices harmonious. Miss Cowan possesses a sweet voice, and was compelled to ieqond loan encore and was also tho recipient of a very beautiful Moral offering of white lilies. Mr. Brandkamp, the blind pianist, who accompanied on tho piano, •played several selections in a masterly manner. Taken as a whole, the enter tainment was very much above the average. The members of the club returned to Crawfordsville this forenoon. May this not be their last appearance in this city -as a glee chih.—Dam-ille 111.,) Commercial.
