An Important Decision

There was an interesting (p: est ion de ided in the circuit court this morning by Judge llarney. it seems that Isaac .'avis had a rail pile burned by a sparli from a Big Four engine and brought suit for damages. He failed to get along with one lawyer and then om ployed John L. Shrum making a con tri'ct with him that if the case were lost •Shrum should pay half the costs and i( it were won Shrum should receive one third the damage. The contract came out in evidence yesterday and Kennedy

Kennedy objected and moved to dismiss the case as Messrs. Davis and Shrum were guilty of ehampertous making such a contract. This morning Judge Harney overruled the motion and an appeal will be taken to the supreme couit, .if Davis wins his ca6e,

There is more Catarrh in this sectior of the country than all other diseases put together, aud until the last few years waB supposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly falling to cure with local treatment, pronounced incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires a constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. ,J. Cheney ,t Co., is the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken internally in doses from 1(1 drops to a teaspoonfnl. It acts directly on tho blood and mucouB surfaces of the system, 'i'hey offer one hundred dol-

District Lodge Meeting,-.. ..

One of the most profitable and entertaming meetings of the Good Templars was that of the Fifth District Lodge held iu this city on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Quite a numbor of delegates wero present who took a lively interest in the proceedings. A great deal of the business done was of a private character, but good results will occur from it. The public meeting held on Wednesday night was an interesting and pleasing one. The Juvenile Templars, together with Miss Mabel Mat. thews, delivered amusing and pathetic, recitations and dialogues, while 1. K.

Wade. G. C. T.. of LaFavette, llev. D. L. Vandament. 1. C. T., of Bainbridge, and G. W. Paul, ot this city, gave forth their ideas in stirring speeches, and each one commanded the undivided attention of tho audience present on that occasion. The closing meeting was lielil last night at which T. J. Lee, Grand Secretary, of Logansport, made the principal address, who was followed by each member pr»sent with a short talk upon the subject,

Why I am a Good Templar." Much good it is believed will be the result of all tho meetings. The next meeting will take place on July 27 and 28, the place to be doc ded by the District Executive Committee. The representa tives of the several lodges expressed themselves as highly pleased with the hospitality of our people and are only awaiting an opportunity to reciprocate.

Answer to Mugwump.

ibs Editor ol' The Journal. In Mugwamp's article in Thursday's JoriiXAii he asks: If it be true that the price of clothing is now almost 113 low as it is anywhere on earth what is the necessity of maintaining a protective duty, etc. If you have weeded out the grass from your corn, why bother any more about it? True, the weeds and grass will grow again, but you have once per formed your duty. Your corn is clean and healthy and is growing why bother with it further'.-'

He goes on with the oft.repeated theory that on a suit ot coarse woolen clothes that is worth £(!. the duty would be SC..C.7 cents, claiming the poor, nerworked voter pays the §0.(17* more for tho suit because of the IMcKinley law. Ought he not pay twice that much if he is fool enough to buy foreign goods when ho .can buy better uality of home manufacture at less than the tariff? This very tariff, which is causing the upheaval in Mugwump's bosom, has enabled home manufacturers, by competing with each other, to tho jrico of common clothing.

If the finer grades cost more, the downtrodden" voter says, let the rich who are able pay fane/ prices for fancy goods, but let the workingman have the beat common goods at lowest prices.

If Mugwumps were in tho mercantile business' in Crawfordsville and a peti tion were circulated asking the council to assess a liceuse tax upon ljoddlerB he would be one'among the first to sign it: and he would be right, but such course would be equivalent to a tax.

He HBks: Why discriminate in favor of the manufacturer as against the wool grower? Every Republicans asks the same qu*stion and is opposed to the present attempt of the Democratic majority in Congress to put raw wool on the free list. He says the duty on raw wool is only 11 cents, while Unit on manufactured goods is 49.V cents per pound and (SO cents advalorem. He ought to know that th's very distinction is in favor of labor, for more than ninety |or cent, of every manufactured article represents labbr.

The chronic grumbler and calamity howler will say in reply that this tariff goes to enrich the manufacturer and impoverish the laborer yet be knows thai American labor is better p:iid than an}, the world and if the present method of protecting labor reduces Wages, what vouid free trade do'.' Would not open ng the gates to the manufacturers ol 'he world to free admission compett with our own workers and thus rednei their wages? Experience says yes: they say no. Which will you believe? If protection does not protect, will free trade protect?

He sets up another cob house and proceeds to knock it down by asking if farm labor would not bo reduced by a reduction of prices of farm products. Vet this same tariff spreads its protective folds over every product of th farm. If Mugwump's mrimory roaches back to the days of free trade, or tarill for revenue only, he will remember what wages were paid farm labor, viz •57 to SS per month, while the farmer competing with all the world in our markets, received oil cents per bushel for his wheat and sold liis milch cowifor the fabulous sum of 87 to $8. Dowhe yearn for these good old days. Doeshe yearn for calicoes, English manufacture, at 'M, cents per yard and mus line at 25 cents anil pay for them ir. eggs at cents per dozi-n, and butter al 5 cents per pound? Such were the pries in the good old days of low tariff. Mugwump's theory might sound lieautiiiil were there any facts to maintain it, but alas, it is only thin theory.

Twenty-five years of protection has made such developments that rational America! will be loth to destroy such a wholesome system.
