WASHINGTON-, Ind., April 12.—Tlie trial of James C. Lavelle for arson was begun again Monday afternoon, but most of the session was taken up by tho discussion of the question of admitting the testimony of Grand .lurnr Uagsdale as to tho statements of Sam Ilarbin in the grand jury room. Harbin had claimed on the stand that he was forced into the confession he made by officers who threatened to hang him in the jail. Tho state wishes to prove by the grand juror that Harbin told the same story that__ lie did iu the jail, and there could not have been possessed by him any fear at thattime. Harbin was again placed in the box to lay grounds for an impeachment. Detective Forsee was placed in the stand and testilied as to the courthouse keys found in Harbin's well and the revolver which Harbin carried. On cross-examination the defcuse asked him if ho had not told Pierce Sanford lie got $500 for throwing the keys in the well. He replied: "No, sir and if Pierce Sanford says I did he lies." By the testimony of Harbin's wife it was proved that since her husband was sent to the penitentiary site liaiflived in Jim Lavelle's house and has not paid a cent rent.

Woman Who Will Not Talk.
1 N ni AN A I'OI.IS, Ind., April 12.—The police aud several insanitj- experts are con: iderably puzzled over a case which ha.' just developed here. Saturday evening- a young, well-dressed womaL was seen upon the streets and was noticed to be occupying the same position for several hours or until quite late in the night. Finally the police accosted her, but were unable to make her talk. She was taken to the police station, but still refused to break her silence, and, supposing, she was deaf end dumb, she was given a slate with a written request that she write her name. She paid no attention to the request and Dr. Earp was called in. The case proved a complete enigma to him, and Monday the woman was sent to Dr. Fletcher's sanitarium for treatment. Dr. Fletcher is not convinced that she is deranged, but is endeavoring to find out why she persists in refusing to talk. Nothing is known about licr, and it is impossible to get any clew regarding her identity or dwelling place.
