There vrere about 175 persons in the rcuit court room last evening and ti largo number of them were Kepubliean.s who came up to see the fun but who were very geiiMously neeordecl the privlege of voting if thoy chose, by tlio tellers. Chairman ilannn called the neeting to order anil Head Uannii uomuatiKl H. D. N'anclenve, who lives half a mile south of the city, as presiding oilk-er. mes Kennedy was made seeiry iind then .1. It. llanna moved that the convention consider at once the propriety of uomiunting a candidate for Marshal. Head llanna thought that question eouid be taken up later on and in the grand right and left which followed J, K. Hanna's motion was lost sight of. Jack Kelly arose, however aud demanded that a "full" ticket be nominated aud sat down amid howls of laughter. The convention evidently misinterpreted his meaning.
Nominations for Jluyor were culled for and Charley Oswald nominated J. K. Courtney, CJncle John Kchleppy nominated Steve Lee ami Robert Be.'k -.4 nominated Sidney Speed, when upon a bald headed poker player ver in the southwest coriier of tho bar clapped h'.s hands. Tho nominations then ci aSfed^iuthongh Uncle Alex Harper who was a candidate, a.4ked in a dazed manner if that was nil. The hat was then passed and the tellers proceeded to count. Speed ran ahead from the jump and when John L. Cioben's hat was empty lie had five-sixths or more of,, the votes. He rah weil through the top of
Jim Hann.vs hat too, but when it came to the bottom of that mysterious liat there was a change. About the last 'J votes pulled-onti were for Courtney, and the followers of Speed were fairly wild It was a plain case but luifortuuately for Mr. Courtney's clninbes there hadn' been quite enough of it. If there had been a riot would have occurred right there. The vote stool,' Speed 81, Courtney 00, Lee 14. In the applause which followed the court house cat which is supposed to be endowed with the virtues of. mascotte t.»jk fright and ili'd in terrified dismay.
Nominations for Treasurer were then declared in order and Will Johnston nominated Con Cunningham. Uncle John Schleppy, who evidently wanted to be huird, noniinaUd John M. Stiultz. Both gentlemen withdrew in favor of \\. \V. -Morgan, who WJIB not present but who was .nominated by acclamation. Cierk come next and on the motion of Charioy Johnston Will Sidm-r was nominated by acclamation,
Then cams up the question of Marshal and J-iiil Vance was nominated. Then stepped forward J. H. Courtney aud stated he had authority to withIraw 7\i r. Vancc's name. Mr. Courtney moved that the convention niako no nomination for Marshal and mi llanna seconded it. The motion was pnt and lost by a largo majorii.v. Mr. Vance hiinself vot-ihg against'if.. Then up rose Surveyor Hunt aud said he didn't understand th« motion. On the motion of a gentleman who had no possible right under tin- shining sun to make such a motion tho question was reconsidered.
Then came up Courtney again and declared that life Democrats who had any particle of sense knew that it was impossible to beat Mr. Uiothcrs. Ilo made a hot speech for Mr. Brothers and tin question being put it was decided by a decided majority to place no candidate for Marshal in nomination. The three wards then scattered about the room to nominate Conni'ilmen. At thin period Mr. Vance walked about and cursed the partv furioukly for not nominating a Miiishal. He swore by all the saints r.rni gods that the ticket could go plumb to weil, to a more heated zone.

THE COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION-
Its Sunday Desecration—A Vigorous Plea Against It. IA paper ivao beforo the Ministerial Associationat DarlimMou bv Kev. .1. M. Stafford, and published by request of the Assoeia1 ion. the 12th
Four hundred years ago on day December, 1402, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. The Columbian Exposition is to commemorate this event by causing tho nations of tho earth to bring their specimens of art, science and agriculture and place them on exhibition by the side of our own at Chicago, Illinois.
The question is: Shall this exposition be open on the Christian Sabbath, commonly known as Sunday? Of the discoverer Washington Irving says: "The voice of prayer and melody rose from his lips on discovering the new world and his first action on landing WUB to prostrate himself on the earth and offtr up thanksgiving. The Sabbath was to him day of sacred rest, in which he would never sail from a port unless in case of extreme necessity. ..
Would it be in harmony with the ob Porvanee of this event to violate his principle and example in the eves of the representatives of the world
The men who planted this nation were Christian men and believeu in me most, rigid observance of the Sabbath iw.
On board the -May Flower, Xov. 11 lliOO, they entered into a solemn com pact. They said: "Having undertaken for the glory of God, and tho advance nient of His Kingdom, it, voyage to plant the first, colony on the northern parts of Virginia, we do, by these pres ents solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, combine ourselve into a civil body politic."
The day before they landed at Ply mouth Hock was the Sabbath, and it was sp -nc in religious worship. "A mill the storm they sutife'. •A ml the sturs heurd unci the sen.
A ud the forest of the dim woods ring Willi the iiotheins of ihe free," This rock became the corner stono of the new Republic, nnd the principles of the observance of the Sabbath was important factor.
The Continental Congress formulated the government of ^he United States of America upon these broad principles.
The Judges of our Supreme Court have acknowledged the Christian Sabbath ns constiuent part of our common law.
Every State in our Union, with one exception, has laws condemning ordinary labor on this day.
As commander-in-chief of the United States Army, the Presidents of tho United States have been issuing orders regarding the observance of tho Sabbath. This is true of Washington, Lincoln, Cleveland, and lastly Harrison. June 1'J, 1889, President Harrison said: "The President directs that Sunday morning inspection will be merely of the dress and general appearance, without arms and the more complete luspection under arms with all men present will take place on Saturday."
All former expositions conducted by the speaking nations have closed their gates on the Sabbath day, with one exception.
This was true of the London Crystal, New York, Philadelphia, Australia, and the first at New Orleans. At the second at New Orleans tho gates were open hut the clergy of the land lifted up their voices against, and it became a financial failure.
At the Paris Exposition of 1889, of the seventeen hundred exhibitors, only sixty-live were shown to the public on the Sabbath. During this Exposition the Director General gave command for the opening and exhibition of articles, but the greater portion refnsed to uncover their work to the gazo of the Sabbath breakers.
Blaokstoue says: "A corruption of morals usually follows a profanation of the Sabbath." llallam says: "A bolidav is the ally of despotism."
The Christians of America, in the name of Rest and Religion, demand that the exposition close.
The 700,000 wage workers, through the representative of the Brotherhood of Railroad trainmen demand tho rest of the Sabbalh. Two hundred am fifty thousand of these now have no Sabbath, Of this number twenty seven hundred meet a tragic death evory year. Twenty thousand are Gripped each year. To open tho Exposition would be to increase this number.
Tho National Farmers' Alliance off America utters this sentiment.: "Believing that obedience and veneration to th laws of God are the conserving and saving force of human government, we do hereby respectfully request that the directors of tho Great National

their speaker tho unAmericanized forgn element who make tho holy day a holiday :n tew pseudo liberalistsjand the soulless, wealthy corporation who would rob tho workmen to till their own coffers. God and iiiun must be robbed to enrich them.
What are the arguments 1 "The workmen need open doors that they may go to the Exposition Tho half holiday of Saturday would give them the opportunity.
Full holidays at other times would give them the same privilege. But those who run the railroads, Btreet carp, hotels, restaurants, those who care for building and exhibit articles, must all bo at work continually without a day of rest. These must have added burdens to tboso already on their weary hearts and hands.
Tho engineer says of his engine, "she needs to rest.' The sciciuiticmechanic Bay's: "A wheel continually in motion has a tendency to tly off from the center. The •ohesivc force is destroyed. I do not say it must rest on the Sabbath day, but I do say it must have rest and tho Sabbath gives the needed rest."
The Sabbath law has been laid by the Almighty in matter, mind and works, ind to fail to obey is to violate a law of Nature as certain as that of gravitation.
Another plea is a financial ono: "It must be done to meet expenses." This is fallacious. Other expositions have not opened havo and succeeded. Under this plea the Metropolitan Museum at New York opened on the Sabbath. Eor awhile thore was an increase but the loss was twelve thousand, six hundred forty-six dollars per annum.
The moral people are a large factor in this country, and their sympathy will largely be lost if this step is taken. It will be a step backward in tho inarch of civilization. The onward march toward a higher standard of morals, not a lower.
Germany now is seeking to prevent Sabbath-desecration, in the interest of the laborers.
Archbishop Ireland, of St. Paul, demanded the close "In the interest of our Christianity acd the laboring class. The workmen of the Continent wearies of the Continental Sunday.
Protestant Sabbath-observing Lon don needs but three thousand police, whilo Paris', only half as large, requires over one hundred thousand soldiers.
Spain and Mexico are specimens of what America will be without the Sab bath.
Shall this exposition bo to educat the world upward or downward? Shall anarchists, reformers, (falsely so called) and milk and water religion ists rule this country to the detriment of morals, uiind aud muscles, or tho worl keep holidays in so far as our control of this exposition is concerned
Let not the anger of the God of Sabbath, who himself rested from all his works be poured out upon our Nation and on the world. God's land keep lier Sabbath during tho seventy years of captivity while the violation of law might be fulfilled.
Let America not light against God. This whole movement is to favor the few without conscience and thought at the expense of the many. ^It will rob men in the name'of liberty of the very fundamental rights upon which our government is founded— "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
Selfishness lies at the basis of the whole movement to rob God and humanity.
It would not be liberty enlightening tho world, but tho great light turned into darkness, to drive back the nations to the oblivion of the past. It would violate the moral, the mental, and tho physical law which demands rest and change for man, matter and mind. It would turn the whole concern into a gigantic, feast to mammon and curse America and tho whole world of mankind.
Let Columbia thcKCin jf the ocean, (.hlciigu thuKuui of this West, Cease from labor, and stop the eonwnotiou,
Jiy observing the Sabbath of rest.
There is more Catarrh in this section of tho country than all other diseases put together, and until tho last few years was suppo?ed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced incurable. Science litis proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires a constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Chenoy SR Co., is tho only constitutional cure on the market, ft is takon internally in doses from 10 drops to a teaspoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars Tor any case it fails to cure. Send for circulars anil testimonials. Address.
