A Close (Jail.

There was a lively set to yesterday morning at the establishment of (leorge Ueii on north (jreen .'street. It appears that Clara Thompson has been tolerably thick with (leorge and when another eolon'd gentleman named Forney, who reci ntly arrived from Blootnington, began to bask in the s.un.shine of her lovely firnilefi (reorge fell the green orel monster kicking about, in his bosom like an irascible mule in a cowshed. Finally spurred to desperation he got out the family meat knife vesterdav morning rnd went after Mr. Forney in startling manner. There would have been death right there had not Fornev drawn a large revolvoi and holding at his antagonist's head backed to the I door and escaped. Forney swears there will be blood shed yet.

C. M. Scott is again the candidate for Cierk. and again will be elected to the position he tilled so ably last term. Mil is all right in every way and is worthy of the honor he won without opposition.

John Brothers, the candidate for Marshal, has already demonstrated his entire fitness for the place ti. which he h-ts been nominated by a number of Tears of efficient service on tho police force of the city. Ho is honest, fearless, and thorough in the performance of hie duty and will make a splendid Marshal.

Ben S. Myers, tho candidate for the Council in the First Ward, is the very man for the place. He represents not only the interests of his Ward but of the city as well, and is wrthy of all confidence as a conservative, businesslike Councilman.

Austin Tomlinson, the candidate of the Second Ward, is one of the city's most enterprising young bufiim-ss man. He has been engaged in the grocery business here for several years as a member of the linn of Tomlinson A Scaggs and has hosts of friends who will see that he is elccted by a good round majority.

A. J2. Reynolds is again up from the old reliable Third Ward, and will be elected again by an increased majority. During the last term he was one of the most active members of the Council and has obtained a knowledge of the conditions and requirements of the city that makes his presence in the council chamber indispensable.

The Republicans have nominated a red hot ticket and will elect it bv a red hot majority.

A 01inre.ii War iu Which There is MUCH Bail Blood ami Laugtu\ie.

Center church, in Coal Creek township, is presumably so called became it is right in the center of the Bristle Ridge neighborhood and is, iu point of absolute fact, perched sipiarely on tho topmost pinnacle of the much maligned ridge. Center church is sustained and maintained by the New Light denomination and the presiding genius is a good old elder named Click from Boone county. Now, Center church always been notorious for its .rackets and

jn la'e hour before the ballots were all has probably figured moie in tho courts counted and when at length t.h? work of justice than any other three churches was done the result lii the several wards in the county. Tlieru, is a row now on foot in its several precincts, however,1 which bids fair to surpass in magnitude' and 'excitement any previous s-trnggle which has yet been euaclijd thcreairtlie' name of the .true religion'.''"To It'egin at. the beginning, as Yory Brookshiro would say, it seems that two or three years ago a wild eyed, long haired Free

Willi.

Methodist prea.her passed through the Bristle liidge neighborhood Seeking whom he might devour. He devoured

a good many chickens and considerable corn bread to say nothing or pe.iuheB and watermelons in iht^ir season, and he also led several good and worthy New Lights from that straight and narrow path ill which they had traveled friiti their early youth. Of course, Center church lost, no time in expelling those

v!

its members who dated to listen to the fiery words of this false prophet. Among the angels who fell a' this time were John Harmon and wife, and the ollicial board lost no time iu relegaling them to the cohorts of the eternally condemned. Well, it cauio to pass that in the progress of time the Free Methodist [(readier whose heavenly artillery had crowded the mourners' bench with writhing, groaning and repentant sinners. betook himself hence and the burrl'JT oak hats of Bristle liidge knew him no more. His tlock scattered and the Harmons seeing the error of their way again began to attend the services at

The ticket is headed by a gentleman who has nothing against him and everything in favor of him. Mr. Bundel ban been closely ident fled with tho city's interests for years. He is well acquainted not only with every class of people here but with the needs and the requirements of the city in matters of reform, internal improvement atid progress of every kind. He has been a member of the council and is peculiarly adapted to the position to which he will be elected.

Wm. E. Nicholson, the candidate for treasurer, needs no better recommendation than his past able admininistration. Hels popular, progrefsive and will be elected by the usual largo majority.

Center church. Almost, a month ago it was noised abroad tfiat they intended to "join" again and no little stir did this announcement cause. The other even-

Harmons and hi- prayer and sermon both teened with frequent, allus'om- to the hundredth sheep. .as the sermon nearud its end the excitement, became intense and when it was finally ended and the jiatriarchel old elder (quoad'the communion table and called for ••joiners'everybody was at a fever heat. A tlivery first call the Harmons arose ani started for the front with grim dctorhil nation written on every feature. I^lder Gliek with ii,any long drawn, out triumphant '•aniens" received the erring sheep. Now it is the usage of the church that after a sinner has. been received 'by the elder the congregation shall sing some old familiar hymn and ail shall inarch around at.d extend tho hand of fellowslnp. Elder (Hick had barely shaken hands when a loud voiced llarmonite struck up' the hymn but immediately there went up a roar from the anti-Harmo'nite side. Trust- es I'res. Swank and Ed Razor leaped upon the seats and pointing their long, accusing fingers at the Harmons demanded that they confess their sin in following the Freo Methodist jin.oh'r. After a

stormy seenee the Harmons confessed in sack cloth and ashes but still Swnlik and Razor p-otested against their admittance. Sister Va.i Sco.v am! brother lohnstoli Mitchell stretched their nei ks across the aisle and denounced the tru«tees noutidlv. For the full length, ci" the church the rival tactions .'leaned across the n:sle and shook their threatening lingers under each others' turned up noses. Choice epithets were freelv pas ed acrosH the same narrow space ami soiiie were even garnished with luxuriant and expective adjectives jiot in keeping with the sanctity of the place. Elder 'dick's voice resound-'d high above tho din as he raised it in prayer and supplication. Finally he obtained a hearing and dismissed the congrega tion without tie* communion. This h** tlally refused to administer and packed up the rare old wine of the after-frost vintage of-,.tl in spile of protests and longing looks from the congregation. All howled long and loud over this high handed ebnlit, ion and for the time t.iie Harmon matter faded into insignificance. The congregation W..bdismissed without ceremony' and trouble for the time averted. The Harmons will try lo join again at the next monthly meeting and a lively time isexjieoted. Factionalism has grown apace and even tin' hal.« arc iu arms., ..
