A SAD DEATH.
Tbc Infant Dauetiter of S. 6. Betchos and Wife Drinks Morphine Watirand Dies.
Last evening it most sad accident ocurrt'd lit the borne of Dr. E. Detcbon, on south Green street, by which the life of Martha, the sixteeu months-old laughter of S. Li. Petehon and wife, was lost. For several days previously the hild had hoeu troubled with a gathering on its neck and this had been bauInged. The bandages used had been lainptnt'd with water into which had been put a small Amount of morphine aud laudanum to oase.the pain. This water was Wpt in a small vessel in Mrs. Potclion's room. Last evening about 5 o'clock the little child was observed
Hitting down tin.' vessel from which she had just taken a small drink. Dr. Kisino was hastily wumnoned and emetics administered with apparently satisfactory results. At 8 o'clock when Dr. Kistine left the little child was resting asily ami wi'8 thought to be out of danger. In less than half an hour, however, she was siezed with spasms and died shortly after 10 o'clock, havng suffered from several violent convulsions. The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at Lafayette, the remains being taken there to-morrow on the 1:30 p. m., Monon train. The aftliction falls tenibly on the bereaved parents and they have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
Adjustments.
.Tndge Field, the general attorney for the Monon, was in the city last evening ind made some settlement with J. V. Mulsbary, who had both arms crushed in the wreck. Mr. Mulsbary is not at liberty to diecloso as yet the amount he received, but when asked if it was Sl.OOu as was reported, he said: '•Well, I'll just say this, Judge Field's tirst offer was away beyond that—away beyond. That, however, didn't nearly come up to my figures which I then named. It didn't take us loug to agree.
I will probably never regain the use of my arms entirely and have to be fed even yet, but food gotten even in that way 18 considerably better than none."
J. N. Beach and wife, of llomney, are yet to be settled with. Both have serious injuries, and both will be visited by the company's surgeon before a settlement is made.
Pay Your Taxes,
The now tux law provides that the county treasurer shall make his return to the auditor on the third Monday in April, and the entire settlement be completed by the auditor and treasurer nnd the return made to the auditor of State and all State taxes paid into the State treasury by May 15. Should the treasurer fail to comply with this provision, he is liable to be fined 15 per cent, of the whole amount of said taxes. It will, therefore, uot be possible for the treasurer to extend the time for the payment of taxes. .'
Badly Hurt.
Yesterday Charley Miller, the son of Adam Miller, sustained an injury while woiking at the heading factory, which may result in the loss of an eye. Me was at work near the saw when apiece of heading Hew olT, and striking the belt was thrown directly in Miller's faw, a corner striking him in the eye, cutting

TIDE AND WAVE POWER
An Iusenioua Invention for Utilizing the
Waves of the Lake or Ocean. The fuel method of obtaining power for our mechanical use has long been determined to be too expensive, and scientist have been searching for a more economical method of supplying the required energy.
Tho direct application of compressed air to the engine, instead of steam, iB under experiment and at the l'aris exhibition waa shown to possess many economical features, but still this system requires the fuel method to compress the air.
This cut represents an apparatus named "The Tide and Wave Power." A patent was granted July 7, 181)1. It is
the joint invention of Geo. C. Hale, tho chief of the Kansas City Fire Department, an inventor of natural fame, and T. K. Tinsley, architect, now a resident of Crawfordsvillo, also an inventor. The object here it- to utilize the motion of the waters of the sea and great lakea, and apply it to storing energy," which may be used for mechanical purposes.
The energy present in the water motion of sea or lake, is simply incalculable. Some iden ot the great power may be obtained when it is known that the storm wave strikes the shores with a put force equal to 3i tons to the square foot or about 50 pounds to the square inch and the average wave is calculated to have a force of about 20 pounds to the square inch.
This great energy has been shaking otir 30,000 miles of sea shore for cen turies, vainly thundering its mighty force under our very noses, to no pur pose, it is allowed to go to waste.
This Hale-Tinsley invention claims to be a harness to lit the tide and bridle the ware, and some of our most eminent engineers arerigbt now investigating us claims.
Tho following is the description: "A'- is an air tight float of suitable sliaipo to best tako the full str 1 the wave. is a

CO are rigid arms, one end being firmly attached to the float and the other end being pivoted at tho fulcrum at which point their is a rigid rocking shaft, as shown. That is it is rigidly fixed to the arms CC and moves with them upon the pivot at D. This pivot is securely fixed to permanent piers at each end, these pierB being substantially secured to tho bottom.
These arms CC simply act as levers and transfer the motion of the float A to the rocking shaft at D. This

point is always submerged in the water to a depth of safety against the storms aud K. EE are power cables connecting tho rocking 6liaft at to tho rocking shaft on shore ot H, where tho woiking beam operates the two pumps and as shown.
The pump, G, is for the purpose of raising water to a suitable elevation, where it is reservoircd, as ot K, ready for water power puposes.
f:
The pump IB for compressing ahand storing the same in proper recep tacles, as at J, ready for power purposes.
The reason the putup is not used for pumping water is that the upstroke of the float A and arms CC varies with the irregularity mt height and force of the waves, consequently is deemed unreliable for a water pump. While the pump is worked by the down stroke of the float A and arms CC, which being a stroke produced by gravity is always of the same force.
The dotted lines at represent how the apparatus is made to sink itsolf automatically at the approach of storm, and thus escape its fury and destruc
tion. This is accomplished by the warning given in tho power room by the wind cups, L, which are regulated by a governor, set to any desired velocity of the wind, and which cause thelloat A and its arms CC to sink by means of opening valves and admitting water into the float, A, and also starting a drum and cable which drag the float down to safety, as shown. After the etorra passes the cable is released, the float pumped out by compressed air, and once again it rlsei to the surface, by
Messrs. Halo and Tinsley claim that they can generate electricity by this method at less than one-tenth tho cost by the present fuel method, and that it can be supplied within a hundred miles from the coast at less than any known or used method. They estimate that an apparatus possessing one thousand horsepower capacity can be built at the same cost as a one hundred horsepower steam plant, and operated at less than one-tenlh of the cost of the annual op erating expenses of the steam plant.
One of the chief officials of tho World's fair has corresponded with Mr. Tinsley, advising him to submit a proposition to the directors of the great fair so that the apparatus may be put to use on exhibition there. This may possibly be done.
