HE UOTHZREl) MISS LESLIE.
1 A St. Louis Physician Who Persisted in Annoying Luoy Leslie COUIBB to Grief.
Tho following from the fct. Louis (.llolh'-Democrai of yesterday is explan.v tion in full of the sensation in which Miss Lucv Leslie of this city figured so prominently. Miss Leslie's friends in I this city will ba pleased to learn that she came out of an unpleasant and disagree
able episode so wMl us she did: Dr. H. Van Gerhart, 11 well known young physician and a member of a prominent West End family, was tinceremoniously ejected from Hotel Moser on Saturday evening, and his escapade is being freely discussed among club men and in exclusive circles.
Miss Lttcile Leslie, a milliner from Crawfordsville, Ind., resented the young man's attentions, and his persistency in trying to seo her in her room resulted disastrously. The young lady came to St. Louis i'n Thursday, presumably 011 Imsi.iess, and was given room til), in the northwestern corner of the hotel, on the third ltoor. I. N. Kilchie, who i» said to bo a traveler for Strauss' millinery house, of this city, but who registered from Indianapolis, signed for Miss Leslie and himself, and it is supposed that hey came to this city on the same train.
Miss Lei lie was away from her room most of Friday and Saturday, and now she is gone for good. The story is that .1 few days ago she called at l)r. Gerhart's office to ask for uiedical advice. It is also Btiid that Dr. Gerhart met her one night at some gathering or entertainment. At any rate, the physician considered himselt an uciiuatntiiuce, and on Friday sent up a card to her room asking her to come into the parlor. The uilliner sent back a message that she tiid not know the caller, and did not care to receive him. The doctor departed, and the incident reached pro prietor Leo Moser's enrs. The hotel attaches say that a number of calls were made without the formality of cards, and that each time a trip was made to the corridor into which room 89 opens tits errands were fruitless, 11s the knocks were not heard or not answered. Mr. Moser learned that his guest was being annoyed, and tried to catch the intruder in the act.
Saturday about 5:15 o'clock Dr. Gerhart left his office. The determined vistor ascended the stairway quietly, but aot unnoticed. The night watchman was told to wait at the foot of the staircase. Mr. Moser sntered the elevator and was whisked up. They met unexpectedly, and a forcible pressure was exerted on the doctor's collar. The elevator boy waited on the third floor while Mr. Moser dragged Dr. Gerhart into the car. A number of blows were passed, but the assault was so sudden that the medical man was considerably at a disadvantage. When the door was opened on the main lloor Mr. Moser yanked the fellow-occupant southward and pushed him down the stairs through the storm door. No blood was spilled, although the bystanders looked for serious outcome. Miss Leslie's friend was not uround, and it is believed did not know that she was being annoyed. Later in the evening Mr. Ritchie and the object of Dr. Gerhart's visits were told of the encounter, tmd to avoid further trouble packed their belongings
and departed. Mr. Ritchie left the city. The lady, it is stated, went to a friend's house on Grand avenue, near Hotel Beers, and then ont of St. Louis, Her destination is not known. The traveling man had known her for years, having been a Bchoolmate. and simply looked after her comfort. Dr. Gerhart's friends say he called in a proper way and sent up his card, and the next day want up stairs and knocked at the door, and pressed his acquaintance no further.
The Ohislstt Reception,
Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Chislett gave an elegant party laBt evening in the assembly hall at the Propyhi'iim in honor of their son, Mr. Frederick Van D. Chislett, and his bride, formerly Miss Katherine Elston, of Crawfordsville. Mr. and Mrs. Chislett's receiving party included Col. and Mrs, I. C. Elston, Mr. and Mrs. D. II. Jackson and the Misses Elston, of Crawfordsville, and assisting in entertaining were Mr. and Mrs. Rich ard Chislett, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin D. Walcott, Mr. and Mrs. James N. Winters, Mrs. John A. Ilolman, Mrs. Ketcham and Mr. John Chislett. The hr was beautifully adorned. The tall mantel was banked with plants, vines and Bermuda lilivs, and opposite, on a raised platform where refreshments were served, there was a rich border of palms, lilies, tulips and freosia. Hart's orchestra was stationed in ihe balcony, and furnished music for the dance. More than two hundred representative society people accepted the generous hospitality of Mr. nnd Mrs. Chislett, and extended congratulations. Among the guests were Gen. aud Mrs Lew Wallace, Mrs. Henry 8. Lane, of Crawfordsville Mr. and Mrs. William T. Edwards, of Pittsburgh Miss Guilford, of Lebanon, Pa. Many elegant toilets were worn, nnd in the mellow light from the shaded ehnndeliers tho assembly was brilliant in tho extreme. Mrs. F. D. Chislett wore her bridal gown of white faille francaip, trimmed with pearls and lace. Mrs. Edwards wore an exquisite black lace, draped with liiaca. Mrs. Elston wore a handsome black brocade, trimmed with jet, and carried a large bouquet of Niphetos roses. The party was ono of the most delightful that has been given at the Propyliuum.—Iinlitinajxilis Journal.
