THE GOLD EXCITEMENT.
W. H, Durham Reminisces in Regard to His Rush For California Forty-Three Years Ago. "Just 43 years ago to-day," remarked W. II. Durham, "I wns in Rockville preparing for a start to California in search for gold—all was hubbub and excitement as uiany of our older citizens will bear me witness. In the year of 1S49 was perhaps tho greatest civil exodus of ancient or modern times. Many of our older citizens will call to mind the intense excitement prevalent that almost paralyzed all kinds of business and for a time unsettled the level heads of cautious, eonsorvativo men. Soon after the acquisition of California from Mexico on the closiugof the war, gold was said to havo been discovered in digging mill race for Capt. Suttor, on the American fork of the jsacrmiento river by a man named Marshall.
Many were the exagerated reports of its vast and inexhaustible richness. The excitement spread far and wide to all parts of the civilized worl.l until it was asserted that King Solomon obtained the gold used in building the Temple from the Pacific slope, so that it was but a short time until by land and sea every method of conveyance or transportation was brought into requisition whilst many, very mauy, had the hardihood to Btart on foot, relying ou a rifle for food and the hospitality of those more favored with wagons bound for the Eldorado."
Did the excitement soon cease? "Mo, the contagion spread—maps were consulted- "What I saw in California," Stewart, read—Fremont's reports were in great demand and the experience of French traders—travelers and guides of tho Kit Carson stamp eagerly sought after."
"Yes. tho rage struck this community early. A company was quickly organized at Kockville, articles of association drawn up and recorded as a joint stock company, consisting of the following persons, namely: John Sunderland, Charles Grant, B. W. Shackleford, Chas. Linkswiler, 1. M. Nichols, Linsay Hanua, Lucien A. Foote and William II. Durham. A similar company was organized at Oreencastle, namely: E.A. Johnson, Kobt. Kankin, William and David Standiford, William Cunningham Albert Patrick, William Shields and
William Wuod. This company had started and canie to Rockville for the purpose of joining with us for mutua protection across the plains. They arrived on Saturday evening the 17th day of March, only to intensify tho excite inent with that old prince of Presbyters, the lie v. Aaron Wood, who proposed to preach us a sermon suitable t, lIjo occasion on Sunday night following
I'ho old Methodist church was crowdei to its utmost capacity^ MrT~Wood in uis happiest vien, the fervent prayers vet eyes and heaving breasts of sympathizing friends only told too well thei eelings as the speaker warmred witl tlio occasion in fatherly advice—for pro tecting care—health and prosperity.
On Monday morniug, March 19th 1M9, everything in readiness, westarte on our long, long journey to the setting jun. We got as far as Armiesburg th drst day, having in our retiuue main dear friends who went a day's march to give a good beginning. We left quite a concourse of people at the northwest corner of the public square, waving hats and handkerchiefs adieu with fervent prayers and moist eyes. So we moved otl with our white covert wagons, built and equipped especially for the trip to order, drawn by three yoke of oxen oach, the bed spread out over the wheels and a full supply of many unneccessary articles, as we afterwards found out, under the platforms, on which we slept on blankets." "No, not all the people thought us wise and enterprising, for some days before we left the excitement was wonderful. Many were the comments ano out few apparently looked upon it with favor. The idea of going away to California—foolish young'men, to endure the privations, hardships and dangers of life from the scalping knife aud tomahawk was simply ridiculous. Others looked at it differently with encouraging words. Nothing ventured, nothing made. It took pluck and courage to undertake the venture on so uncertain a tenure." "Ves. the start to tho plainn was quite exciting. We expected to rendezvous at •St. Joseph and increase the company defensive and offensive, which we did with a number about Charleston, Ills., until we had 137 in the train on starting from St. Joe. We did not hang together long and many funny things come to memory of that warlike appearances first taken. It was astonishing along the route through Illinois and Missouri how our passing excited and stimulated the organization of companies bound for California."
Here let me digress in selecting camping grounds and privileges. The whole way was almost' an unbroken prairie from the Wabash to tho Missouri. Well a great big mansion, outbuildings, lots, groves and apparently every convenience for comfort, "no accommodations granted," "don't keep travelers," so we jogged on to the next neighbor and found them apparently not hnlf •", well fixed, Vnl with a we].

come to make one happy, invited us to their hospitality. So we found it not in looks nor outward show that we had favors, reminding one of that scriptural allusion—"not by word or might" nor show—please drive on.
We had a jolly, good kind of fe'lows. At night with songs and music, wo were peculiarly blessed in that particular to beguile the tedious hours in camp before turning in for sleep, talking over loved ones at home, wives and sweethearts. After the novelty of a few days and weeks at most they turned back for the flesh pots coming to the point of love greater than gold.
Was the traveling bad? Oh! the fearful roads, many places almost impassable. High wators and swollen streams made it a tedious trip to St. Joe. Wo made it a point to rest on Sunday, do up our work and olean up camp. When we arrrived at St. Joe our cattle were in fair shape and the whole surrounding conntry was dotted over with white tents, hurry Hurry shaping up for a start across the the plains.
Wo crossed the Missouri with our train without accident on the 7th day of May, 1849, and arrived at Placerville, or Hbngtown, on the 5th day of September, 1849, with one wagon, four yoke of oattle and three men, viz: Linsay Hanna, Charles Linkswiler and W. H. Durham. The Rockville company held together until at the link of Mary's river they virtually disbanded and the others determined to push forward and take possessicn before the favorablo digging should bo exhausted. What a change has 43 years wrongnt.
A Snperb Entertainment.
Music Hall was packed last night to w.tness tho ''Three Guardsmen,*' as rendered by Salvini und his company of playerB. It was a magnificent performance and there was not a dissatisfied person left the house at its close. The entertainment was by all odds the best given here this winter unless "Don C:esar de Bazan," as presented by tho same combination last fall is exccpted. Salvini himself appeared to particular advantage and there was not a "slow" actor in his whole support. Not for a moment did the performance lag and the interest of the audience was kept at fever !heat. The scenery was also of the finost and tho whole entertainment can be summed up by saying that it could not be surpassed. May Salvini often cotne this way.
"Ska Couldn't Marry 'Three'" Manager Townsley iuforms us ho is negotiating with the Manager of "She Couldn't Marry Three" for one night. He says there is a very small chance of such a company having a date open. No matter, let thorn know wo are on earth, We may catch them on the rel urn. You must remember 'twas wind that mado Chicago. local applications, as they cannot reach tho diseased portion of tho ear. There is only one way to cure deaf ness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inllam ed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed. Deafness is the result, aud unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever nine oaBes out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mu cous surfaces. URIC ACID.
WHAT IT IS AS HOW IT FORMS.
.1
Clrar Description of This Most Subtle Enemy of Modern Amcrtcim IAfe—What a Promtneiit
I'rofesso Says.
Ji. well known professor connected with a leading medical college, in conversation, recently made the following wonderful assertions: "There is probably nothing which has ever been known in the history of the world that has caused more real misery to men and women than that simple and yet dangerous element called uric acid. This dangerous substance gets into the blood of men and women, and even children, even before they suspect it, and the havoc that it works is simply appalling. It causes rheumatism, neuralgia, gout and pneumonia. It is the cause of most colds and the actual source of nearly every case of grip.
You ask how this dangerous acid gets into tho blood? Very easily. The principal duty of the kidneys and bladder are to expel uric acid from the system. They fail to work very frequent ly, and, instead of being driven from tho system, this poisonous uric acid goes into the blood. When e:i?o in the blood it ferments, it poisons, it causes uennmbered diseases and too often oc
casions death. "It must bo plain, even to a novice, that the only way in which to keep this acid out of the blood is to keep the kidneys and bladder in a strong, a healthy a vigorous condition. This is the whole problem in a nutshell, and the icuin or woman who does this is invariably free from uric acid and tho infinite troubles which it causes. I have never known of but one thing that will in every case drive uric acid from tho system, and that is Warner's Safe Cure. It has been found by tho medical profession to be possessed of properties unknown to any discovery of ancient or modern times. I have known of women who have been weak, sallow, run down of men who have been debilitated and wholly unnerved, who are to-day pict ures of health and strength, and they know as well as I do that the result is duo to but one thing—tho great cure of which I havo spoken."'
The groat truths above stated aro as certain ns existence, and they reveal th real cause of most physical misery of the present day, and they clearly reveal the way of escaping from such misery, No man or woman at the present day should be the victim of uric acid poison That it is very prevalent is most true, but to permit it to get into the system or having gotten there to remain, simply folly.
