A crowd of Crawfordsville capitalis visited Klwood yesterday and after looking over the city, concluded that Madison county property was a good iuvestnieut and consequently thirtyseven lots changed hands. .1 ndcrson Herald. --A meeting or tfie county fair directors of Crawfordsville. Lebanon, Shorilan and all other fairs within the circuit, will be held in the city the first day of next month, to talk over business pertaining to the fairs of next Fall. It is understood that about double the amount of money will bo used in the race purses this year over that of last year. There is no one thing adds more to the success of a fair than tho races, consequently as much money should be expended in that direction as possible.

In the .Yew 1 url LeytKlature. The following taken from tho "Oil Paint and Drug Reporter," refers to a u«w bill just introduced in the Legiilature of New York:
Tho latest development in the baking powder war, is the introduction of a bill in tho .Legislature of this State, requiring all packages of baking powder which contain ammonia, to be branded with a statement of that fact in largo type on the, label.
Noiv while the ammonia contention is on why cannot the law give the public the benefit of the, doubt? Who'lv unprejudiced people are certainly not willing to be dr-ied with the substance acknowledged as poison, simply because scientists, some of whom are not even physiologists, disagree as to its potency."
A similar bill was introduced last Apiil, but it is shrewdly surmised that the inlluence of interested parties prevented its passage. The provisions of the present bill are so just that it probably will soon become a law.

(Medical Tribune.)
Professor Rudolph Virchow was seriously ill sevoral months ago. An admirer of his, tho owner of a certain proprietary medicine, took occasion to present him with sotno bottles of his discovery. Virchow recovered, and was certain that he had received much ben ofit from tho remedy. He accordingly addressed a letter to his benefactor, acknowledging the matter and expressing his gratitude. The letter coming as it did from the most distinguished teacher of pathologic science in Europe, was •published ond widely read. The North German Medical Association, like similar bodies in America, has its cranks on ethics. They endeavored to call the professor to account for disregarding the code. Virchow regarded the instincts of a gentleman, and tho honor that loads a man to render justice, as paramount to the peck-measuro ethics of a oonceited gang of half Hedged medical men. He answered them with hearty contempt, and withdrew from the association. He chose to stand on manliness, and could afford lo do
It was an issue between ethics and a man, and manhood was asserted." At about the same tiir.e the editor of this journal wrote a letter to a gentleman in western New York regarding the merits ot a remedy known as Warner's Safe Cure. The circumstances in the caso were as follows: Wo had frequently been asked by patients if wo knew anything about this remedy, and were obliged to answer in tho negative. We then began to make inquiries about the remedy, aud were surprised at the reports we heard regarding it. We then recommended it in several cases that had resisted all other treatment, and the resultB wore surprising. The albumen rapidly disappeared front the urine aud the patients felt greatly improved in health. Feeling satisfied that tho compound wub'd valuable one, and that it could do no possible harm to any one we continued to recommend it, and were surprised ut the good results obtained. 3
After sevoral months' fair trial we did not hesitato to indorse the remedy, believing as we did that it would prove a boon to Buffering humanity. We have no reason to regret our action in this particular. We recommend a remedy that has benefited thousands of persons wo have seen its good effects ou our own patients after all other medicines have failed, and we are not afraid to say lo the-public and the profession just what we know of it.
Medical journals of all schools of medicine are filled with advertisements ana editorial puffs of proprietary medicines, many of which are worthless. Tho editors know nothing of their composition or preparation, but have an eye to the money they get tor their advertisements. There has been no protest against these things. How, therefore, a certificate based on experiences such as ours, and without compensation, should have greater turpitude. iB a problem beyond our capacity. Why one should be fish and another llesh we are not sagacious enough to determine. Wo leave it for those who care mere for tho rotten corpso of tho old code than for common fairness and common sense. LjThose who are eager to find fault will do so. They are heartily welcome to their task. To be euro blows can bp given as well as takon, except that some escape because of their contemptible insignificance. We have no ammunition to waste on such. This, however, we will say: No man of common human sensibility, who has the red blood of a mammal, and not tho pale, snaky

lluid of the lower raceB, will have the heart to judge our actions severely or to say that we hnve done aught but what we havo always claimed to be our right to use any remedy that will benefit our patients, without reference to tho source from which it comes.
The above ablo article from the pen of Dr. 1?. A. Gunn, editor of the Medical Tribune, strongly corroborates the statements already made by the doctor in the public prints regarding the un llsual merits of the greatest modern ma chine. This preparation, after twelve years of unqualified success, has finally received the commendation and indorse mont of the lea iing members of the medical profession, both in this country and in Europe. Dr. Gunn in his recently published interview, gave his unanswerable reasons for indorsing this great remedy, and it goes without saying that tho most distinguished teacher of pathology in the world to day would be the last to recommend a proprietary irticle without having tho utmost faith in its curative power.
