THE 00UN01L MEETING.
The Council, After an Unpleasant Session Ratifies the Disputed Purchase, The council met in session last night as a committee of the whole to consicer the ratification of the purchase of the lamps and converters from the Western Electric Supply Company. A guarantee was read from tne company which stated thiit it would insure its goods for a period of two years against all injuries except those from fire or injuries resulting from mismanagement Mr Scott then moved that the purchase be ratified and the motion was seconded. Then ensued very unpleasant little discus sion as to the methods in which the pur chase hod been originally arranged for when the committee had gone to Chi cago. This began by Mr. Yanarsdall stating that after the purchase had been agreed to by the committee, the Westinghonse people had offered the same goods for S'100 less uumey. This was explained by the committee stating that the converters offered by the VTestmghouse people were entirely too large and io have purchased them would have been a dead loss. Again, the NVestinghouse people did not make their offer until after they knew the purchase from the Electric Supply Company had been agreed upon, and wos then merely offered to stir up strife.
Dr. Jones, who was late, hero eame in and lost no time in accusing the committee of tinkeriug in order to favor the Electric Supply Company. Mr. Reynolds then called Mr. Jones a liar and Dr. Jones lost no time in calling Mr. Reynolds another. A few more unpleasant compliments were passed and linally the question was put and the purchase ratified. Scott, Smith and Reynolds voted for. uud Jones, Walter and Yanarsdall against, Mayor Carr casting the dec'.ding vote affirnatively, because the goods were on the ground and he believed it to be the best thing under the circumstances. Dr. Jones had stated on entering that he intended to vote for the ratification on the same round that Mayor Carr voted, but after the squabble he changeg his mind. Before adjournment the charge of the Star to the effect that there was an ugly bill for $1,-100 on the original purchase unaccounted for, was brought up by the Mr. Smith. Mr. Keeney. who was present, slated that he hail investigated the oharge which hail b.HMi made by an enemy of the city plant, and ho found it to be untrue and would make a correction. The council then adjourned.
The misunderstanding in regard to the purchase or the lamps and converters is an unfortunate one but that it was merely a misunderstanding is patent to anyone who has sense enough and candor enough to make an investigation. Tho committee went to Chicago to purchase wire, poles, lamps and converters. The poles and wire were bid on by several companies and the Electric Supply Co. lost both contracts. Upon investigation it was found that the Electric Supply Company alone had the stylo of lamps und converters desired so they got that uontract, at a very reasonable price. After it was all over a WeBtinghouse agent came to Crawfordsvitle and offered ^oods at a lower price, but as his goods were not the kind wanted and of a kind which could not be used except at a great IOBB his offer was rejected and the original agreement adhered to.
Salvini in ''Tho Three Guardsmen." Those who went to tho Walnut street theatre last night (the house was crowded) onjoyed a treat in the presentation of "The Three Guardsmen" by Alexander Salvini and his excellent company. Mr. Saivini's D'Artagnan is a fine piece of acting, wholly natural, always intense, and never going beyond the bounds for the purpose of awaking the gallery gods. It is p. heroic character that could be easily spoiled, but Mr. Salvini, liKe his father, is always careful and signally effective, as lio certainly was last night, therefore giving a perperformanse that was thoroughly natural and which was heartily appreciated by those present. Each member of the east is worthy of praise.-— Washington Star.
Eye Put Out.
Yesterday afternoon John Petro, a well known citizen of this county resid ing near Darlington, was chopping wood when a limb llew back and struck him in the eye. It was so cut that tho inside ran out. Dr. Berryman sent him at once to Dr. Greene in this city, who now has him under treatment. There is little or no possibility for saving the member, however. This is peculiarly unfortunate as Mr. Petro lost his other eye when a child. Ho is a good citizen and his many friends will be pained to learn of his sore misfortune.

(N\ V. Sun.)
It would be difficult to measure the interest and comment, not to say
-ex-
citament, which the published letter of Dr. R. A. Gunn, which appeared in the papers yesterday, has occasioned. Tho prominence of the doctor and the unusual nature of the letter have both tended to add interest to the subject and make it really the talk of the town.
I called upon Dr. Gunn at his residence, No. 124 west Forty-seventh st,, yesterday afternoon. I found the reception room crowded, and it was only after an hour's waiting that I succeeded in obtaining an interview.
Dr. Gunn is a distinguished looking man and impressed me at once by his manly bearing and air of sincerity. I took the seat he courteously offered mo and said: "Are yau aware, doctor, of tho commotion your letter has caused
Dr. Gunn smiled and replied: "Things out of tho ordinary usually cause comment. It is not a common thing for physicians to indorse and cordially recommend medicines other than those in the Materia Medica. History is full of instances of scientists who have indorsed discoveries thev believe to be valuable, and have been denounced for so doing, and yet these same discoveries are blessing the world to-day. I hope I have the manhood and courage to be true to my convictions, and that is why I so openly and unhesitatingly indorse Warner's Safe Cure as being the greatest of modern discoveries for the cure of diseases which have bafiled the highest skill of the medical profession."
I was impressed with the earnestness of the doctor and saw that he meant every word that he said. "How long have you known of this remedy, doctor?" I asked. "Nearly ten years," he replied. My attention was originally called to the Safe Cure by a serious case of Bright's disease, which was considered hopeless, and yet, much to my surprise, under its use the patient recovered. I have tried it in other cases since then constantly, and my original faith in its power has been confirmed. I have seen patients recover from inflammation of the bladder, gravel and Bright's'disease when all all other treatment had failed, and I have found it especially efficient in all female troubles," "Can you specify any particular cases doctor I said. "That is a delicate thing to do," the doctor replied, "but as I always keep a written record of my eases, I can accommodate you."
Thereupon the doctor opened his desk and produced his record book. Turning over the leaves he said:
Hero is a case of a gentleman who was a great sufferer from inflammation of the bladder of long standing. He had consulted a number of physicians without benefit. When first consulted I myself tried the usual methods of treatment, but without success, and I finally advised him to try Warner's Safe Cure. He felt bettor from the start, and in a few weeks was entirely cured."
The doctor turnod a few pages fur-! ther, and then said: "Here is another case. It is that of a gentleman who had frequent attacks of renal calculi, which, as you know, is gravel forming in the kidnoys. He had never been able to prevent these formations, but after an unusually sovere at
DTRIGE'S

tack I recommended him to try the Safe Cure, which ho did, and, although it is three years since he took tho remedy, ho has never had an attack since."
The doctor continued to turn tho leaves of his book, and suddenly exclaimed "Hero is a most remarkable case. It is that of a lady who had suffered for some time from Bright's disease. She became cncicnte, and about the fourth month suddenly became blind, had convulsions and finally fell into a state of coma, caused by uremic or kidney poison. Several physicians who saw her said she could not live, and in this view I fully concurred. As she could still swallow, I said, as a last report, that they might try Warner's Safe Cure. They did so, and to tho surprise of everyone she recovered. She has since given birth to a living child and is perfectlv well." "Those are certainly most wonderful oases doctor," I said, "and while I do not for a moment question their authenticity 1 should consider it a great favor if you would give me thoir names. I think the importance of the thing would fully justify it.""In the interest of tho other sufferers I think you are correct," Dr. Gunn finally observed, after a moment's thought. "Both the lady and her husband are so rejoiced, so grateful over her recovery, that I know she ia only too glad to have others hear of it. The lady is Mrs. Eames, wife of tho well kuo*.vn costumer. She was not only restored but is in perfect health today."
I thanked the doctor for his courteons reception, for the valuable information imparted, and I feel assured that his generous and humane nature will present him from feeling other than glad at seeing this interview published for tiie benefit of suffering humanity.
