A HOT OASE

Tne Suit of 0. J.

Follick AgainBt W

Darnell Will be Interesting. Judge Thomas this morning filed his answer to tho complaint in the case of O.

Follick, guardian of Annie Simpson, against W. J. Darnell, the oily barrister of Jiintown. Th« complaint alleges that the dofentant obtained from Mrs. Simpsou 171 acres of good, rich land by the rankest and most disreputable sort of a fraud. It states that Annie M. Simp son is a perBon of unsound mind and has alwayR been, that every one who knows here is cognizant of the fact, and no one could talk to her live minutes •without putting her down as a perfect ninny. She is not only crazy but also absurdly ignorant, and can neither read nor write. The defendant who has been fifteen years a lawyer know all this and that she could be easily cheated. He knew that Thomas Courtney, of near

Waynetown, held in trust for her fift* acres of land. Tie had his brother who resides in Waynetown, to visit Mrs. Simpson and tell her that Courtney never intended to deed her this laud, and that as soon as an heir was born to him sho would be powerless to ever get it She believed him, and upon his solicitation had authorized hiin to omploy an un attorney to bring Courtney to timo. Tho complaint then goes on to say that the statement of Darnell's brother 10 Mrs. Simpson were wholly false. Tom Courtney was her friend and the best one she had. He had taken her an orphan when two years old and raised her, and in fact given her all she had. is intentions toward her were of tho best. He had repeatedly offered to deed tho land to Mrs. Simp son but she had refused to take it. lie had also refused offers for it from other parties telling them that it was for Mrs

Simpson. The defendant was notified by his Waynetown brother of the condi tion of affairs and with hira went out to Mrs. Simpson's whoro all tho false stories were repeated and power of attorney gotten from the feeble minded woman. The defendant then wont to Court ney and demanded §2,000. This was refused, Courtney Btating, however, that ho would deed the DO acres to Mrs. SimpBon whenever she wanted it. II accordingly did deed it to her. The oomplaint then states that there never was any need of an attorney in the case and if there had been Darnell's services were not worth over 315. But he ut once demanded from Mrs. Simpson a deed for 17J acres of tho land and she unwittingly gave it. This tract was worth S900 and he has since received

S150 from it in rentals. It is alleged that Darnell worked tho whole scheme for gain and fraud nr.d 1 he court is asked to Bet asido the conveyance.

Darnell's answer 6tates that his services were worth tho price obtained, that Courtney had to be forced lo make the deed and that ho believed Sirs. Simpson to be a person of sound mind. Davidson West and J. .T. Mills appear for tho plaintiff.

The Judge's Puwl.

There was a grand social at tho Long View school house last evening, and a urge crowd attended. Among others was Judge Snyder, and in an evil hour he entered iuto tho game of "'fish, (owl or beast." This entertaining and intellectual game is performed by those taking part standing in a row in front of a monitor or teacher. This individual selects a victim from among the number and calls out for instance "beast!" The party called upon must name a beast before tho monitor counts five, or must himself become monitor. Lust evening tho game was exciting and Judge Snyder was one of aptost pupils. Hut he came to griof. The monitor suddenly turned upon him and called out "Fowl!'

The Judge started but returned instantly "Sucker!"

To Vend the Bed Eye.

The county commissioners granted licenses to sell intoxicating liquor today to tho following enterprising, right"Otis and patriotic gentlemen: S. T. Boam, of Waynetown: K. H. Allen, of Darlington Kph and C. O. Moirs, of Now Richmond: John Kelly, Charles II Amiihel. Georgo Pitcher, M. J. Callahan, August M. Karle, David Johnson and Mike McCarty, of Crawfordsville.

Tbe Long Talked of Oase of G. W. Paul Will be Wound up To-morrow. This morning G. W. I'aul filod exceptions in tho circuit court to tho ruling of tho court in postponing his case and refusing him admittance .to the bnr. James Wright, of tho Arm of Wright & Seller, then requested the court to call a bar meeting for to-morrow morning at ten o'clock to consider and take some definite action in the matter. Thoconrt accordingly issued the call and nti interesting meeting is promised. Tun JOUHXAIJ

interviewed a number of at

torneys on the subject but all wore reticent and did not wish to be quoted in tlie matter. It maybe said, however, that some aro for Mr. Paul, some against him and somo are

extremely indifferent. Several stated that under no consideration would they attend the meeting, not desiring to figure in the quarrel in any way or even to take note of it by their presonce. It is certain, however, that at the meeting the old cbargeB will be brought up and Mr. Paul will be called upon to explain. If this is done and an explanation, suitable to tho occasion is given., it is very probable thrt Mr. Paul will bo admitted. Some of tho members of tho bar aro quite bitter, but Bome who wore foremost in tho former prosecution are nowtaking but little part.

G. W. Paul was seen and wheu asked what ho would do in regard to tho matter gave one of his most genial smiles

I do not know what will bo done at this bar meeting," said he, "and as in a game of chess I do not know what move I will make until my opponents move. However, I am in the hands of my numerous lawyer friends."

"It Uosts Too Durn Much." Agent H. S. Watson to-day received a telgram from Judgo Field instructing him to offer Miss Helen Love, the actress who was injured in tho Monon wrock, $50 to settle with her in full Miss Love had boon paid SI 50 at tho jump but is layir out for $50 and ticket to Now York. This ticket to Now York is the sticking point. Holer, wants it but the company don't want to give it. Agent Watson offered her tho $50 thiB afternoon but sho refused to take it stating that sho would think over it until to-morrow. She gavo vent however, to the following encomium on tho officials of the Monon road. "That Judge Field is a moan old scoundrel and I would just like to got a chance to tell him BO. Tho railroads have the advantage- of us because it costs too durn much to fight them but I don't, intend to stand it. This Monon road has the moanest set of men I ever saw. They aro every last one of them sjoundrels except you, Mr. Watson and

Dr. Ensmingor. That Dr. Davis is a lying Bcoundril and I just want to tell him so too."

The fair Helen is an'adept when it comes to roasting people, and is evidently possessed of characteristics which render her capable of taking care of her

self...
