Higher Education at Long View. "J'll never ehow tobacco. No. It is lilth weed. l'U never put in m* mouth. aid little Uolert Kvii." At tho Orphans' Home there has been a lively time for the past two days and it really seemed for a time that one of the pretty little children would leave the home for another not made with hands. It came about in this way: The other morning tho kind matron gave the little son of Francis ltaredon, who lately came in, a clean fiandkerchief, tied his little necktie and parting his hair with an exact nicety, started him off to the Long View school to learn to shoot with the other promising young ideas. Now, some of those young ideas who attend the Long View school have learned something beside shooting during their brief but exciting sojourn in this vale of tears. They have acquired among other things the knack of chewing the wet-d and masticate vmh haughty proficiency all grades from the thin sweet savored plugs which come done up in tin foil with a chromo on the inside down to the long green twist which is so popular on Goose Nibble and Bristle Ridge. These youngsters at Long View are great chewers and can kill nine times out of ten a fly on the fence fifteen feet away by playing upon him with a well directed stream made by puckering then infant lips into the shapo of tho latest patent nozzle. This is mc-rely stated as prefatory to the fate of the littie ltaredon boy. Tho lad who can't chew and kill Hies isn't in the swim at Long View. Accordingly the other morning some of the larger boys who were charitably inc.ined and who keenly felt the disgrace of having to go to school with a boy .vho could't chew, took master Raredon out behind the woodhouse during the recess to give him instruction in the manly art of mastication. lie was given about a quarter of a pound of long green twist and entered upon his lesson with dm diligence. Unfortunately for his digestive organB he made the somewhat embarassing mistake of swallowinj the stuff. In a short time he was feel ing badly and all Monday night his life was despaired of. He rallied Tuesday, however, and is now out of danger.
Master Raredon will probably be a little leary about his chewing lessons in future and perhaps he won't even care to try it again when he goes back to school and sees his accomplished companions kill lliea una b' rryw "chews" of each Jther with a nonchalance which would do credit to a horse jockey or a gravel hand.
