BRICK PAVED STREETS.

The ])reser.t miserable condition of our streets, which nre not much worse thnn thoy are every year nt this season, hns led to the agitation of better material than the gravel that is_ now used and which must be replaced tit short intervals at a heavy cost. The material suggested is brick which is now coming into general use in nearly every city in the'country. The advantages of brickpaved streets are cheapness, durability, comfort, health, even surface which prevents. wearing, and less liability from damage to frost. For heavy trallic they are just the thing being smooth there is no jolting of heavy loads and consequently no wear. ,Tlie city of Bloomington, Ills., is the birth place of the modern improved brick pavement, and has samples of it which have been in use for sixteen years without requiring any repairs whatever. Tho contract price for putting it dow run from Sl.lH to 31.94 per square yard. Brick paving means substantial, lasting and well graded streets at a little cost at tirst but a large avingof money in the end.

TUE lying pretense of the Democrats that the free listing of wool will greatly cheapen woolen clothing in this country ought to be promptly exposed and denounced. The only countries that have woolens cheaper than the United Stntes are those in which women shear the sheep, weave anil dye the wool, and make it. It is this cheap labor of women and girls, who get from SI to S4, and So per week nt the very highest, that makes goods exceptionally cheap abroad.

The commoner articles are nearly as cheap here as abroad, but in order to bring all woolens to the European level it will be necessary to put wool on the free list, and degrade American labor and have the work done by women and girls instead of men.

IVUMEK LIVINGSTON, of Georgia, has punctured the bubble of the dreamers who thought thoy saw in the Farmers' Alliance movement an opportunity to unite the South and West against the East and North. Livingston declares himself a Democrat, and exhorts all Southern Alliance men to stand firm in tho Democratic party. The liopublican farmers of tho West, who are asked to ibandon their allegiance to the party for the phantom of a powerless third party, can read a warning in this.

Tin: Indianapolis Neics, free trade, publishes an article from The Metal Worker in which" tho charge is made that the English manufacturers of tin plate, are making light weight tin in order to compensate for the new tarilT, IJut what sense is there in the tin-plate makers of- England during this when they can just add the tariff to tho price they Fell for, anil save themselves that way': Why resort to a fraud when a simple, honest process in addition would inttko all things ri^ht?

THAT ROW,

A Statement of Facts Made by the Chicago Committee. In answer to the utterly false article hich appeared in the Star this morning under the head of "The Row in the Council" we wish to make the following plain statement of fasten ®he committee which went to Chicago to look after supplies for tho electric plant W6nt under instruction from the committee of the wliule to get figures on supplies which they did, and on returning reported the eamo to the council nt its regular meeting Feb. 22, Mr. Reynold making the following report: That the committee had signed no contract ex cept for the poles, which contrnct was "114 lower than any other bidders. He also reported the figures from the other bidders on the remainder of the supplies and asked the council to confirm the report, which was done. Under the following motion made by Mr. Scott, that the report be accepted and the committee instructed to purchase tho transformers and other supplies at the prices named. On motion of Mr. Vanarsdall the motion was amended to read, 'provided the proper guarantees were given," which motion was passed without a dissenting vote and is a matter of record on the minutes of said conncil.

The bids on transformers which seem to be tho bone of contention with our friend the Star, were as follows, viz: Western Electric Co's hid ••.'.."O.'I.IO Knapp Electric Co's bid '2..Vjil SO WesMnifboiise Electric Co's bid ... 2.-J34.S0 Western Electric Supply Co 'J.:2s.00

Tho Western Electric Supply Company's bid being the lowest by SG.80 the contract was awarded to them on the following conditions: that thoy would give us a written guarantee igainst burning out by lightning, a thing which none of the other bidders would do, and as the city had boon using the Stanley transformers and had found them to be the best in every particular, the committee selected that transformer. We have them in use, know what they are and do not deem it advisable to experiment with something we know nothing of. All the row there is in the council amounts to nothing. A booby from the WestinghoiiRe Company who failed to get in his work on the committee, learning the price made by the Stanley, and that tho contract had not been signed, came here in a sneak ing way and submitted a second bid which was dons to create a disturbance,

I feel it my duty to say few words in regard to Ely's Cream Balm and 1 do entirely without solicitation. I have used it more or less half a year and have found it to be most admirable. I have suffered from catarrh of the worst kind ever since I was little boy u"d nover hoped for cure, but Cream Balm Balm seems to do oven that. Many of my acquaintances have used it with excellent results.—Oscar Ostrum, 45 Warren, Chicago, Tils.

JAI Grippe,

"o healthy person need four any dan gerous consequences from an nttack of In grippe if properly treated. It is much the same as severe cold and requires precyuely tho sumo treatment. Remain quietly at home and take Chamberlain's Cough Remedy as directed for a severe cold and a prompt and complete recovery is sure to follow. This remedy also counteracts anj- tendency of la grippe to result in pneumonia. Among the many thousands who have used it during the opidemics of tho past two years wo have yet to learn of a single case that hns not recovered or that has resulted in pneumonia. 25 and 50 cent bottles for sale by Nye Co.
