L-rial Doer T8.

two enti.e .• .aftor a struggle of ^.s, coiuo ton conclusion .ast nt a few minutes before •ght, by the return of verdict for

Liie phiintilY in the sum of $8,800. The suit was commenced in Fountain couuty. From there it went oil change of venue to Warreu couuty and thence to Parke count y. The evidence in the case would make a book as entertaining as any work of lictiou. I) rial Deer settled in the southwest corner of Parke county

quite young, and devoted all his long life to the accumuiulation of laud and money, so that a few years before ho died he possessed an ostute of perhaps S75.000. He lived with his Bon-in-law, John K. Teegardeu, and some years ago, as the proof showed, begun to lose his mind, and about the samo t'.me his lands and money began to go into the hands of John K. Teegarden as gift, so that at the time of the old man's death, Teegarden had possessod himself of about 100 acres of the old man's laud, worth S'20,000, and some 88,000 to 810,000 ot his money. Some of the estate had beeu given by the old man to other children but in very unequal proportions, a son in Kansas getting but $1,000. After trial's death Aug. T2, lSS'.t. Job, the son in Kansas, came to Fountain county to look into the condition of his father's estate and found thill he had died penniless. He employed William T. Whittington and

Kennedv Kennedy to look the matter up for him, which they did with the result stated. The evidenoe presented many curious features, especially the part that detailed the old man's oddities and eccentricities. As a specimen it was proved that on one occasion he took a large basketful of wool to church with him and distributed it among the congregation, requesting them to pick the wool for him, saying it was useless to spend time listening nt the sermon me rely—that they should bo engaged at some useful employment while hearing the sermon. The argument occupied eight hours and was listened to by a crowded house. Messrs. P. S. Kennoly and William T. Whittington, of Ij C'rawfordsrille, speaking for the plnintiift nnd James T. Johnston, Charles Me-

Cibo and Wm. Bingham, of Covington, for the defense. Besides these attorneys S. 1 Puett, of Parke, and Andrew Marshall were for the plaintiff.

L'he result of this suit will be a re-dis-tribution among the heirs of about 0,000 of property, and the disinherited son, Job, will receive his full share, which will be at least 510,000.

A Surprise Seaignation.

Yesterday morning the congregation the Christian church were greatly surprised when at the conclusion of the morning service, the resignation of the pastor, l!-v. S. W. Brown, wus announced. Mr. Brown desires to devote Ins time to Evangelistic work, for which his ability so well suits him, and for this purpose tendered his resignation whi»h takes effect on May 1. The congregation has as yet no sucessor in view but will doubtless have a new pas tor secured when the time urrives for their unwilling parting with Mr. Brown.

Mr. Brown has not been in Crawfordsville a long lime but has endeared himself to many hearts by his courteous manners, his liberality and his able administration of his church's affairs. Mr. Brown has not only rendered himself popular with his own parishoners but with every congregation in the city. The church people of Cruwfordsville will part with him only with the greut Ht reluctance but. in his new work will unite In wishing him all success and God speed.

''She Couldn't Marry 'Three.' One of the greatest successes on the road will play an engagement here shortly. It is one of the most colossal theatrical enterprises ever sent from New York. During the past summer over twenty men. scene painters, machinists, upholsterers, carpenters, etc,, have been constantly at work building tlio most stupendous scenery and effects. It can be best appreciated from the fact that not one piece of the local scenery is used in the production.

The stage is stripped bare on the company's arrival in town, as everv piece of scenery for the entire play special, and from the nc«ounts which precede the company, some of the scenic effects are simply wonderful.

James Mclntyre.

The committee of the Wesley Horse Thief Detective Association of Wayne township met and passed the following in regard to the death of its honored member, James Mclntyre:

Sinoe trial and death are as much the inheritance of man as joy and pleasure, wo can but resignedly submit to their encroachments.

We most sincerely feel the loss from our association of one of its most com petent, able and respected members, the death of Bro. James Mel it ire and assure the family of our heartfelt sympathy and recognize the irreparable les3 to the community of so prominent nnd useful a citizen.

A Cuiious Eelio.

Dumont Kennedy has sitting upon the table of his office a box for his private papers. The box iB made of finely polished hard wood and makes a bonny appearance. This box or rather the material from which it is constructed has a history. This polished wood was taken from the debris of the ladies' car in the late Monon wreck. It was made from the very board upon which the remains of the late Madame Vanltokey lay and is a most suggestive reminder of the catastrophe.

The Yandea Coterie.

The Yandes Coterie met Saturday eyeuing at the office of J. L. Shram. The paper was read by H. S. Thomson, it being an interesting dissertation on "Trusts." Mr. Thomson took the advanced ground that trusts were not necessarily evil and that what was needed was not repressive but regulative legislation. In the discussion the members agreed in the main with this view. J. A. Greene introduced the Hill boom as the current topio and it proved a very fruitfnl one. It was the general opinion that Hill would be the Democratic nominee for President. A half an hour was devoted to discussing college atlairs and the unanimons opinion was the new president 6hould be an educator, thoroughly versed in all .phases of college work.

Elston Grove.

To the t.'ity Council: With due regard for controlling authority and popular necessity, with an undying love for home and all that makes it sacred and- pleasant, we ask you as the Greeks and Romans, when Carthage was hearing her fate, must our beautiful park be destroyed Be generous and give us reason. Wo love progress and improvement and it it be that we enn belter satisfy public demands and justify all parties concerned, then let our time-honored little grove then let it be deva tated. Of all the places in the city Elston grove is by far the most sacred to the people. And it ought to be for the proprietor thereof lives largely in the hearts of tho citizens.

This illustrious family, whose timely benevolence has lightened tho burdeiiB of numbers of hearts during the past, ought to be allowed to keep this dear little park. If other cities keep parks at the public's expense can't Crawfordsville allow one of lior best citizons to keep a park at her own expense. If the city wants to make improvements on this park let thorn ask the citizens for thei •c cooperation and wo can make this dear place a park indeed. No burr or thistle haB ever been allowed to grow and it has over been a Bpot of beauty.
