/. WAXTRP TO KIM. A KABBF. NI'.W YOUK, March T.—Dr. Henry P. Mcndez, pastor of Shearith Israel synagogue at Ninth street and Fifth avenue, had a remarkable escape from death at the hands of an iusane man shortly after 7 o'clock Saturday night. He is a Hebrew native of Morocco and his name is Jose Mesrachki. He Is a beggar whom Dr. Mendez and some of his wealthy congregation have helped from time to time. He attend ed the services at the synagogue which were begun this eveuinp at 6 o'clock. He waited on the street for the doctor. At o'clock l)r. Mendez appeared. Mesraohki greeted him and walked along beside him. He asked for money as usual. Dr. Mendez said he was getting tired of giving him money continually, and said that Mesrachki ought to go to work and support himself. At 7: to they reached

Dr. Mendez' house. I)r. Mendez opened the door and invited Mesrachki in. Half way down the hall there is a sliding' glass door. When Dq. Mendez reached the door he rolled it back. Suddenly Mesrachki slammed It shut again, and Dr. Mendez turned to see a man with blazing eyes and livid facc.

Demand for Money.

Mesrachki had a revolver in his hand pointing it at Dr. Mendez. He ex claimed: "I want $100 right away."

Or. Mendez after an iustaut recov ered his presence of mind. "Don't get excited and I'll get it for you." he said. "Oh, no, you won't. I want it now," cried the indigent man with a laugh.

Dr. Mendez put his hand in his pocket and drawing forth some money said: *t "Here's all the money 1 have." "I waut S100." "If you don't get out I'll call the police," Dr. Mendez replied.

Shot the ilabhl.

With the revolver aimed point blank at Dr. Mendez' breast Mesrachki fired. Dr. Mendez had backed down the hall and tried to get to the street door. The ball struck him just to the left of the mcdean line in the abdomen, His life was saved by the plaiting of his shirt, which was very thick. The ball struck the shirt plaiting. passed through it and was deflected and passed along just under the skin and was stopped by the lowest rib on the left-hand side. The wound is only a flesh wound. The beggar ran out and escaped.

THEY DIED TOGETHER.

Artist Montague Kills Mia Wife and llim. *t»lf In Washington. WASHINGTON, March 7.—Two shots

fired simultaneously in a room occupied by Fcrnleigh Montague, an artist, and his wife, startled the occupants of the house 51S Fourth street, northeast, Sunday. The door was forced open by an officer, when husband and wife were found lying on the bed dead. From their position the woman had evidently allowed her husband to place the pistol to her mouth aud fire. Then he turned the bloody weapon to his own mouth, fired and dropped back on the pillow dead. Despondency, the result of long and painful illness, was undoubtedly the cause of the deed, but the reason for the wife's consenting to the rash act is a, mystery. A theory is advanced that she worshiped the man to that extent that she was willing to die with him, and another is that, having waited upon him so long and being herself worn out, she too became despondent and preferred to die.

DEFICIENCY BILLS.

The l!ou«e Panne* Two During It* Set nion on Saturday* WASHINGTON', March 7.—The house

took up the urgency deficiency bill providing for public printing. 8370,i)00: government insane hospital, S22,000: police court District of Columbia, S1T,-44-J: public building, Fastport, Me., J0,*.'71: capitol building, £9,000 furniture, Washington City post ofiice, S10,'000. The bill was passed.

Mr. Hatch (Mo.) then called up tho bill making appropriations to supply deficiencies in the agricultural department appropriations. The bill recommended S1 .VA,(100 to carry into effect the meat inspection law and 510,000 for experiments with sugar. The bill was passed.

lilt Physician* Say, However, No Cause for Alarm. WASHINGTON, March 7.—The condi

tion of Congressman Springer is worse. There is a recurrence of the virulent form of erysipelas which had once almost disappeared, and the left side of his face is badly swollen and the eye nearly closed. Periods of delirium are also more frequent and there is a tendency to stupor—a new phase in his condition, but one which his physicians declare not to be particularly alarming.

Stimulate the Mood.

Brandreth's Pilla are the great blood purifier. They are a purgative and blood tonic, they act equally on the bowels, tho kidneys, and the skin, thus cleansing tho system by the natural outlet of the body—they may be called tho purgative sudorific and diuretic medicinc. They stimulste the blood so as to enable nature to throw off all morbid humore, and cure disease no matter by what name it may be called.
