Peace, which the poets picture ae a white winged fowl, is now brooding over the hoinn of tLe solon of liristle Kidge and over the county jail—one wing over the l.idge and the other over the jail. When Sheriff Bible went into ofnce Ron. Ben Swank, than whom there is not a better, brainier man, naturally and fully expected to be selected as his legal adviser. Hut he wasn't and henco it runic about tlif.t the two old comrades who from early boyhood had hunted the feEtive coon together on the baroak thus of old Coal Creek, became exceedingly leary of each other. That is Ben became .'.etiry of John, lie is all r.ght now though. When Ben came into town yesterday -lolin hunted him ip. lie said soothing words and tinally nvited him down to dinner at the jail.
Bon went and ate a real hearty meal, in fact, those present say ifn exceedingly hearty meal. When it was over the ^ood Slier.IT showed him all the "purtys.'' He pointed out "Nig" Seering. and also tin' large pile of locks "Nig-' had cracked when he ought to have been cracking rock: he showed him how the cage goes round, the cell Nancy Lighteap used to occupy and many other beautiful and instructive things. Ben is all right now and by the same token old Coal Creek •will be in the Democratic nominating convention.
:, The Man Troiu Mace. Mace as a seusaiional marriage center is out of sight. Elopements, divorces, and romantic matches grow on every bush and tree, and the chief industry of a large and active portion of the community seems to be the harvesting of this iii'-ioua fruit of Masher Cupid's garden. The greatest master in Mace is T. Armstrong, the handsome, courtly and enterprising saw mill man. Many are the maidenly hearts which have bled for him, but he has a penchant for widows.
II will be remembered how during the h'.'lidavfi he went to Michigan to woo a widow whose langorons signs resembled III length and noise the soughing of the wind through the pine forests of her native-State. J't will nlsobe remembered how he crime back without her, she having hiibiintted his errant love to the teat, of time. Mr. Armstrong could brook no di5ay, however, iind straightway began new conquests in the Held of love.
I'wo oid maids, several sweet Misses and a whole drove, of widows fell before his amorous glances like over ripe apples before the cyclone's persuasiveness. It is finally settled, however, and Mr. Armstrong is to bestow his heart and hand on another Michigan widow, who took advantage of the immunities of leap year and Won the blushing prize in spite of all envious rivals. The luiky lady lives at Carur.a, Mich. She has two married daughters and a son who is old enough to plow. More to the point, however, she owns a large farm and a grist mill, llow the widow ever heard of Mr. Armstrong, how she formed Ilia acquaintance and how she won his love is one. of the'great mysteries which only time and strict investigation by rowing society
