A RIDICULOUS ACCOUNT.
The New York Eress Presents Some New Features in the Peterman
DIYO
Case. The l'etermnn divorce case wont tho rounds of the metropolitan press in stylo gaining new and interesting features the further it proceeded from home. The following editorial taken from the Now York Press is not only verv laughable, but serves to illustrate the elaborate and racy manner in which such matters are dished up to the country at large: "A highly curious and interesting divorce case is reported from Indiana. The suit was held in Craw fordsville, and the parties to it live in a country village named Mace, where Clarence Peterman, the defendant, ii prosperous merchant and large property owner. He owns the general stor^ on the corner of the cross roads and runs the politics of the town. He mar ried his wife in 1SS7 under an antenuptial contract by which his wife agreed to bake hot biscuit and cut his liair. lie was to shave himself and ride in the cars whenever they traveled away from home, lie shaved himself nfte marriage as lie had always done, and as ho hail never ridden on tlie enrs in his "life, and never traveled away from Mace, the bride got no rides on the railroads.
A child was born to them on election day in 1888 and named Grovor Cleveland l'etennan.
The suit was brought by Mrs. Peterman. Her petition alleged that her husband had sold a calf which he bad presented her to induce her to take tuei. icine when she was ill, and had ojolly pocketed the proceeds of the sale that when she had on one occasion baked light bread instead of biscuits, making the loaves "very, very small,'' he had thrown the baking away that her husband had insisted on parting Orover Cleveland Peterinan's hair in the middle, which she considered an inult to the great statesman after whom the child was named, "who was no dude" and which she resented to such an es tent that her husband threatened her with chastisement, and that he had refused her money to celebrate the Fourth of July, a terrible thing in Hoosierdoni.
The reply of Clarence Peterman was equally interesting. He averred that he sold the calf because his wife insisted on bringing it into the house and there making a pet of it, and he complained that she made bread instead of biscuit, according to their ante-nuptial contract that she locked Orover Cleveland up in a closet one day and went hickory nutting with her best clothes on -that she bid his shaving tools and insisted on bis going to a barber to be shaved that she cut his hair ragged bocause he shaved himself against her will that she wanted a pair of silk stockings and made his life a burden be cause he would not send to lnaianapolis for thein.
The evidence on the trial excited the risibilities of the audi»-aco to such a degree that tho Judge was obliged to clear the court room. He refused the divorce on the ground that there was no statute requiring a man to eat bread when he wanted biscuit,- and warned the couple that they had been put to gether to stay together, and not to get a-mndi-r They want, out on the streets, kissed and "made up" and wont backtc the Judge to thank him for not divorc ing them. So apparently this marriage was not a failure after all.
For Mayor.
THE
Jorn.vAL to-day announces as a
candidate for Mayor of tho city of Crawfordsville the name of Hon. Thomas Stilwell. the well known pension attor nev. Mr. Stilwell has been long iden tified with the interests of the city and has many admiring friends who would rejoice at his elevation to the Mayor alty. He occuuied the position once before and his administration was dis trnguished for its progressive ideas and thorough business. His well know abilities as a lawyer peculiarly tit him for tho position.
A Leak iu ttie Tank.
""Tt"'" has been demonstrated beyond doubt that tho coal oil spring in the south end is caused by a leak in one of tho tanks of tho Consolidated Oil Tank Company. It was traced from the spring to tho tank and all the air castles built by the owners of real estate in that neighborhood have crumbled like mist banks before the sun of the morning. Goose Nibble is quiet again.
A Chanee for Specu at Ion. If anybody wants to put up SloO on the merits of their goods it makes no difference to us. But if the Bamo is intended to bluff us that is different. We are prepared to meet tho bluffer on their own terms and grounds.and furthermore we willrfay that we'will raise tho sum to 80(10, saying that our line of bread and cakes will outc.ass, (both in quality and assortment,) the goods turned out by a man who is trying to bluff himselt into popularity. R. C. Ross and wife are in Indianapolis attending the bedside of Mr. Ross's father, who is quite low. —Rev. T. J. Simmons will speak at tho prohibition meeting at the Court House at 1:30 p. ui., to-morrow on tho relation of the liquor traffic to the Columbian Exposition. Everybody invited
to the meeting, which will bo open to anyone wishing to speak on the subject from any standpoint. —Lent begins to-day and this throughout the Catholic world is known as Ash Wednesday. It derives its name from the ancient ceremony of the Roman Catholic church of strewing ashes on the head in sign of penitence. Before mass the ashes were consecrated on tho altar and sprinkled with holy water.
Alone On the Prairie.
The day was in that transitory state when twilight lingers in the lap of day and darkeness struggles for the ascendency. The sun hung in a g-eat red ball of lurid flame betwixt heaven and earth there was a feeling of profound quiet which seemed to settle on all things animate and inanimate.' The birds, the insects, the very trees and sprouting plants wore for the moment hushed as if in expectancy of some unforseen, some inexplicable something which seemed to pervade the very atmosphere. A bull frog gurgled softly as he fell back into the limpid water. Suddenly over the brow of a distant hill there appeared a solitary man, seated astride a great bay horse: he cast one long sweeping glance around him and then went back over the brow of tho hill again. And that same night over seven hundred people were turned away unable to gain admission to tho opera house where "She Couldn't Marry

Voiy's Rival.
George E. Byrd, of Brazil, who wants to succeed Vory Brooksliire in Congress was in the city yesterday shaking hands with the unterrifled. Ho said ho oould hardly hope to win the delegates from Vory's own county but for all that he wanted to get their good will and show folks that ho was just about the stuff. Mr. Byrd's first name is probably Jay, and he strikingly resembles the last year's domicile of that interesting fowl. Mr. Byrd will be strictly in the soup when tho convention comes on but he may kick up enough dust to throw the nomination to Beasley, of Sullivan, who it is whispereii will receive the support of both his own county and Vigo.
It Is a Pity.
It is a pity that there are not more combinations like that of tho McGdieny family on the road. Mueic. Hall had a good audience last night and one which fully appreciated tho charming entertainment which was g'ven. Throughout the programme there was nothing so "line" that the ordinary mortal, who has tho somewhat plebian habit of living on earth, could not appreciate and on joy. All was wholesome, healthy an entertaining from the amusing rolts assumed by little Loo np to tho more ambitious ventures of Mr. Hugh. Tho audience was well pleased with tl.e whole performance.
For Oity Marshal.
John J. Brothers is announced in today's JofUNAi, as a candidate for City Marshal before tho Republican primary convention. "Buck," as he is must familiarly known, has been long connected with tho police force of tho city and has proven himself to be a capable and efficient officer. Should he bo nominated he will poll a strong yoto as he is popular with tho people.
