LOST $200,000 IN THE MAIL.
Package of Valuable 1'apern does Astray Between MluueapolU, .Minn., aud Went Superior, Wis.
West Superior, Wis., Feb. 2f.—Two hundred thousand dollars' worth of mortgages and notes have been lost in the mails between Minneapolis and Superior. It is now more than a month ago that the package containing the valuable documents was shipped, though the discovery of the loss was only made Tuesday. Postal inspectors have been notified and are now diligently at work. .lanuary 14 the papers were shipped from the ollice of W. W. Townsend, a wealthy Minneapolis capitalist, by the .Superior bank of commerce for collection. No notice was received regarding the papers, Mr. Townsend arrived in the city Tuesday and went to the batik. He was astonished to learn that the package had not been received and the authorities were at once notified. Townsend is confident that the package was put in the Minneapolis post o'ttice.

It is known positively that Minister l!cid intends to resign. It is also known that Secretary Xoble has resigned two or three times, but that the president hapersuaded him to remain. Should Xoble go out Land Commissioner Carter, of Montana, might succeed him. There is tall however, that Judge Payson, of Illinois, would be the man.
