This afternoon Mr. Joe Devaney grew quite communicative and opened up his heart in great shape to a representative of the law. Ho thus tenderly aired his sentiments regarding Mrs. Delashmit: "Tell Belle I love her dearly and she is all the world to mo. She has everything to gain and nothing to lose. Ah, yes! Be still, my heart, be still! Tell her I love her madly, and no matter whether she sends ine to heaven or hell, I shall remain BB steadfast as the northern star."

Mr. Devaney should have remembered this burning love of his about the time ho stole the watch and money of his sweetheart. •••,.•

A Pleasant Party-

Last Saturday afternoon when Miss Mamie Edwards came home from town she was very much surprised at finding a number of her friends in the parlor. The occasion proved a most pleasant one and Miss Mamie, although greatly surprised quickly rallied and did duty as a' hostess most admirably, fhose who were present were Mary Fry, Edith Coons, Tot Scott, Bertha Sidener, Mary Mills, Mabel Morgan, Fanny Down^ Mand Scott, Mabel Clodfelter. The Goodbar Oase.

The Goodbar case is drawing to a close. This morning upon tffo assembling of court T. E. Ballard begun to argue for the plaintiff and continued until noon. His speech was lear and forcible and presented his case in its strongest light. This afternoon 1'. S. Kennedy begun for the defense and delivered an able argument in favor of his case. At tho hour of going to press A. U. Anderson is delivering the closing argument for tho defense. The case will go to the jury this evening and il is thought that a verdict will bo reached in a few houre.

One Eyed Jim is Back.

One eyed Jim Devaney arrived in the city Saturday evening from l'ana, 111., chaperoned by ollicer Grunes. Jim was sjivon lodgment in the county jail and when asked what ho h. to say. stated that ho was saying nothing but sawing considerable wood. He had "soaked" .Mrs. Delashmit's watch for S7 and spent tho $27 ho found in tho pocket book. To oflicer Grimes he stated that ho just did it for fun and meant no wrong. Mrs. Delashmit called at the jail yesterday to see tho charmer but was refused admittance bv the sheriff.

COLLEGE NOTES.

The BetaB gave' a dance Saturday night. Dole is very sick at hiB room. His condition Saturday night was quite serious but ho is some belter at present.

Rev. S. W. Brown delivered a very entertaining lecture at the chapel yesterday. It was short and directly to the point.

Rev. Horace Ogdon, who captured second place at the DePauw oratorica contest,was in tho city to-day and states that Miss Nelson, the winner, is a line speaker with a fine speech.

Fifty Purdue students are before the faculty for ''shooting craps" in a low Lafayette dive. Teeters of football fame"is accused of giving them away. Teeters ought to have a medal.

Several members of tho Kappa Sigma fraternity were down from Purdue yesterday chnsing around with the Alpha 1'heta Phis. It is rumored that the Alpha Thotau will soon accept a clmoter from Kappa Sigma.

Death of Wm, M. Epperson. William M. Epperson died this morning shortly after six o'clock at his home on the corner of Water street and Wabash avenue. Ho had been down with a complication of diseases for over a year, and death camo to him in the naturo of a relief.

The funeral will occur from the family residence on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. G. P. Fuson officiating, assieted by Rev. G. W. Switzer. Hie Odd Fellows will have charge of the services and tho interment will occur at the Odd Fellows' Cemetery.

Mr. Epperson was born near Petersburg, Va., eighty-seven years ago last October. Ho came to this county in 183 and ha.) resided here ever since. During a greater part of his life h" was a contractor and is well known by all the old citizens in tho county. Mr. Epperson was an exemplary member of tho Missionary Baptist Church and was a man of upright principles and strict integrity. lie was an Odd Fellow for forty-seven years anil probabiy tho oldest member of that organization in this county.

Surprised.

Saturday evening the Commercial Travelers' Association desoended upon the residence of George W. Coons on East Wabash avenue. They came thirty strong and took the place by storm. Mr. and Mrs. Coons were completely surprised and the evening was most enjovably passed. The refreshments were of the choicest, and ovory ono present was delightfully entertained.

Union Meeting.

The congregations of Center Presbyterian and tho Christian churches held a union meeting last evening at the Christian church. Dr. R. J. Cunningham preached tho sermon taking for his text Nehemiah viii, 10-22 inclusive. The 6ermon bore directly upon tho desecration'of the Sabbath as projxisod by opening the woild's fair on Sunday. It was a masterly effort and was well received by tho largo audience.

Dr. W. J. Owsley will retire from the office of township trustee in the near future, and having already disposed of his fancy chickens will devote his full time to the practice of medicine.

An idiotic fellow by the name of Yates was in town last week trying to sell a good horse for S05. which, on inquiry, belonged to Dayton Boyd, of Thorn town. Our marshal took charge of sa'd Yates and will endeavor to get him in the poor house.
