"A Barrel of Money" was the name of the piece presented at Whitney's last evening, and its title aptly suited the state of things in the bqx office, every seat in the house being taken and the aisles crowded. The play is an American character comedy in which the first scene is a country tavern, then a drawing room followed by iron mills in operation and closing with a terrace of a country home. The etTects are pleasing, especially in the third act, when the engine in the mill is started and slowly the heavv bell bears onward its human freight, a girl hi ving been tied to it that she may never reveal what she has seen and heard a designing rascal do.
Just at the last moment she is rescued and the curtain falls. Such was the enthusiasm of the audience that the curtain was repeatedly rung up. The dancing and singing specialties were'clever and the parts were all vveli sustained.— Uclroit Trihiun:.
From Cox, of Boston.
The Joitrnal is in receipt of the following letter from D. W. Cox which c.xplaius itself and clears D. W. Cox of the charging of renouncing his native city: To tht» Bditor'of the Journal.
Sji'iiiNfiFiELD. Mass., I*'eb. 1. '02.—I plead "not guilty'' to thi} charge of claiming Boston as my home. The Hoosier .\thens stands much higher, in my estimation. As to the tights racket 1 submit th» evidence with the statement that the whole thing originated in a school girl story and was brought out Iiv the .Yeir» as a 'Vooop" without trying to investigate the matter, and. was published before we came here to put the show on. As most amusements of like nature come out of Boston in this section it was taken for granted that there is where this originated. 1 wish to state that we are packing the house at every performance and will continue one night beyond our engangement.

other little feats of a similar character, correctly the saw dust on the I which are course, incident to every well regulated lodge. lint while these preparations were going on so merrily,
other preparations of an entirely different character were in progress across the street in the county Recorder's office. Here were assembling the wives. sisters and sweethearts of the members of the lodge, ami each lady came bearing a burden of the good things of this life. Delicious viands of all kinds were piled mountain high upon the tables and counters in iho oflice. and, at. eight
o'clock the array of ladies mid delica' made an array nl once formidable irresistible and boautous to behold. Abcut half prist eight just as the degree work was beginning, tbe guard at .the outer door of the lodge was startled by hearing a sharp double knock which awoke the echoes of the large lin.lding and caused his teeth to chatter most unpleasantly. While he hesitated the knocks came loiider than before. Cautiouslv he unbarred the door and peeped out into the darK an.l gloomy liallwnv. Tii'n with a shriek he rushed back into the lodge room ami cryed in terrorized accenls that "the lady house had fallen down." No need to tell it, for thev were following hard upon his heels ami before the astounded gentlemen could catch their breatli they were ••held by the enemy," But a most pleasant, accommodating and liberal eneniv it proved. They wore royally treated as prisoners of war. and in less time than it takes to tell it the surprised camp had been transformed to a banquet room where everything the heart and appetite could wish was near at hand. Pleasantly passed the time away and it was nearing the hour of eleven when the merry company broke up, and all departed hoping that surprises may in future be a regular feature of degree work. The Odd Fellows are blessed in their ladies as the event of last evening so forcibly and acceptably demonstrated.

Beer glasses waved in air nlong with billi.ird cues, spittoons aud other [trappings peculiar to the well furnished bar room and it really appeared as though there would be "a mix" unprecedented in the history of our beautiful city.
