A Councilman's Oow.
Jim Walter, councilman from the first word, ha6 a cow who aspires to learning and that by the co-education route, too. At least so it seemed one day last week when she was found in the campus by a Big Four freight train which gave her a severe linzing, from which she still suffers. In fact her recovery is doubtful, and the road will likely pay Mr. Walter some damages.
The Weather Maker.
Hicks' February predictions bristle with horrid storms and frightful weather. He pours down upon our innocent heads a perfect deluge of blizzards, floods, and blinding storms. About the eighth or ninth he promises another great oold spell with heavy falls of snow. The fact ic the whole month is to bo a series of snow and rain storms according to Brother Hicks.
Music Hall Last Nierbt.
There was a good audience at Music Hall last night and by the'same token there was a very creditable show. The singing might have been better without causing nnyone to swoon with ecstacy, tut then several of the specialties were entirely new and were very good withal. The gags were most of them new and the dancing was some of it very clever, and while the audience did not break holes in the floor by its applause nobody kicked on the performance. It was a good average minstrel show and everybody had a chance to laugh.
The Wreok.
The freight wreck on the Big Four road.west of Waynetown which occurred on Monday at noon did not prove to be very serious. The noon passenger trains transferred their passengers and baggage which caused a delay of two hours and a half, but the evening trains went through all right. All the cars damaged were empty except two which contained lumber and shingles, and the loss on the:e was insignificant. No one was hurt, but a brakeman had just started to walk over the train as the wreck occurred, and would have been hurt had he started a moment sooner.
Erratic Edward.
The pantaloons of William Morgan, of Pittsburg, Penn., are out at the knees and he presented a sorrowful spectncle
TB
he appeared in the Mayor's Court this morning to swear out an affidavit against his whilom friend,Edward Brady, of Goose Nibble. Mr. Morgan told a harrowing tale of woe. It seems that Edward worked beside him at Thorntown in the natural gas trench and they were "Comrades" drinking often from the same canteen, or, to speak in point of absolute fact, from the same black bottle. Now William had a suit of clothes being made by Coleman & Murphy, of this city, and so when Edward came home he was intrusted with S15 to pay for the duds and express them to Thorntown. Edward did not do it though and blew in the money on Christmas gifts for his lady friends, at teast,
BO
William thinks. Although frequent ly importuned he has refused to disgorge and Mr. Morgan's clothes becoming very thin and airy he resolved on heroic measnres and swore out a warrant charging Mr. Brady with petit larceny.
Oongresa at Last Takes Action. A bill has been introduced at Washington requiring all baking powders containing alum and ammonia to be so labeled. This is a step in the right direction, and has boon long foreshadowed by the action of State legislatures, boards of health, food commissioners, etc., in this matter. The bill affords needed protection to the public, for the evidence as to the injurious effects of alum and ammonia is very heavy, but it will nevertheless be fought bitterly by the manufacturers whom it effects who are accustomed to soil their goods ns "pure Cream of Tartar," "absolutely pure," etc.
The bill is something needed. If a maker uses a drug in his powder, the name of which he does not want to have printed on his label, it is prima facie evidence that there is something wrong. We hope the subject will be vigorously prosecuted all over the country, not only as regards baking powder, but also all other food adulterations.
This bill may incidentally benefit tho makerB of pure articles, but if it should, this is only an additional point in its favor.

Improprieties On GOOEO Nibble, (iixiso Nibble or (.loose Commons, ns your n-slhi'tic sense pleases, is a neigh, borhood long celebrated Tor tlie elasticity of the characters of the enterprising citizenR residing thoreon. Goriso Nibble as we all know, is situated in the region round about the. Junction and, perhaps, it is from hoaring tho rude brakenien swear that a large majority of the small and larger boys in tlyse precincts have acquired that habit together with a number of others fully as exhilarating and choice. Nothing pleases tho ubijuitious urchins of Gooso Nibble more than to fire large stone through tho window of tho "lone lorn widder woman" along about midnight, and then run laughingly away and steal a keg of tho cool foaming from tho beer depot. Many of these promising candidates for fourteen years at hard labor, disfranchisment and one dollar fine, have never been to school and but few have thoroughly mastered the intricacies of Homer or I'orter on tho Human Intellect. But they are carefully trained in all that is moan and low and vicious. Nothing is safe from them, and the property they annually destroy and steal amounts to thousands of dollars. The plant of tho Indiana Lumber Company is one of the chief sufferers from tho depredations of these ambitious disciples of Captain Ividd. Usually tho greater part of Monday is occupied by tho whole force in repairing tho ravages and destruction of the Snnday outlaw's who infest tho mill playing cards, drinking beer and planning foraging expeditions against, the adjoining neighborhoods. Yesterday it was found that the yyung miscreants had let the water out of tho boiler in order to duck an enemy from a ri-al community dowu about the Monon station. Besides this they bad well nigh ruined the circular saw and destroyed many other things of value. The police cannot manage these young barbarians so a few stern examples will bo made in the near future.
This is the Jolly Ground Hog Day. February second has come to be very generally accepted as "ground hog day" and numberless good citizens have gone about town to-day rubbing their hands in anticipation of an early spring and fair weather. The day opened dark and dreary and Alf Woodruff, who was stationed by ground hog hole at an early hour, reports that promptly at eight o'clock the earth pig stuck his nose out and took a long breath. He then slowly drew himself out looking gaunt and hungry and took a survey of earth and sky. He then trotted forward to a little open space aud arrived in the center cf it he slowly turned his head and stared for full ten minutes at the ground on his north sido. Not the slightest shadow could bo seen and the animal seemed fnlly satisfied that there would be no six weeks more of winter. Ho had seemingly just made up his mind on this point when Alf deliberately shot him down in his tracks and took him home for dinner. Thus did Alf make assurance doubly sure and prevent the possibility of the beast staying in for the next six weeks thus bringing down upon us cold and wintry weather.

Must 1'ay Certified Check*. lNriA.\AroMs, lud., Feb. U.—The full bench of the superior court has decided a case of considerable interest to the tankers of the state. Several months ago a cattle thief sold some stock at the stock yards and was given a check on the Meridian national bank. When ho presented it he was unable to identify himself and he got the bunk to certify the check, which he afterward had cashed at Shelbyville. In the meantime the stock-yards Hrm discovered the fraud anil ordered the bank not to pay the money. When the check came up from Shelbyville payment was refused and suit was brought by the Shelbyville bank. The court held that tho Meridian national bank must pay the amount, as certifying was a guarantee for its payment, and simply certifying that the drawer had the amouiiUon deposit.

INDIAN.WOMS. Ind., Feb. 2.— Oov. Chase arrived from Washington Monday, where he went to investigate the status of the state's claims against the government. Under the instructions of the governor affidavits of persons who received the money advanced by the state with which to buy ammunitions of war are being taken aud will bo forwarded to Washington. Judge l'arker. of the attorney general's office, to whom the claim has been referred, was sick wl the governor was in Washington, but Saturday night the governor received a letter from Mr. Parker saving that as soon as certain papers wanted were forwarded from here the claim would be taken up and adjudicated. The claim amounts to STiiti.UUU.

TXIPIAXATOUS, Ind., Feb. 2.—The board of arbitration which was clioteu to settle the differences that caused the street car tie-up here three weeks ago has rendered a decision conceded to be victory for the strikers. The board finds that the company could withdraw the pass badges, but that it could not do so under the contract of employment without providing other compensation for extra labor required of the men. The unqualified recall of these badges precipitated the strike. The matter of extra compensation is still open for mutual arrangement between President l"renzel and the brotherhood.
