Why Does the Coroner "Monkey?" To ilio Killliir rif the Journal.
Can you or nny one else tell why the coroner of this county IKIH been so long "monkeying" around over tho fenrtul railroad disaster which occurred north of the city some days ago? Is there any ilaw requiring, or oven authorizing a coroner's inquest over a railroad accident?
The statute provide that tho coroner shall hold inquest ove1 ''any person supposed to havo come to uis death by violence or casualty." Does this language mean that tho coroner is to hold an inquest over the dead body of every person who couies to his donth by violence or casualty '.J The very language of the statute implies that it must be a case of doubt and uncertainty as to how the person came to his death—a case where the cause and manner of death are not
It
known—whv hold an inquest to ascertain what everybody already knows? Take the Case of Col. Melvillo McKee. Did anybody ever supixj.se that he was murdered? Is anybody to be arrested for an unlawful honiocide when tho inquest is over? Mas there ever been a question in anybody's mind that Col. McKee was accidentally injured in the railroad wreck, and that he died in his bed at the hotel, surrounded by his friends:' And yet the county is to be put to a large expense to ascertain whether he died from heart disease or from injuries received in the wreck. What public pnrpose will the information subserve whec it is obtained? Shall the coroner hold an inquest in every ense whure it is not known whether a person died of some disease or a known accidental injury? Is it any business of the coroner to hold an inquest to determine whether a railroad accident happened from a "latout defect" in a rail, or from the negligence of the railroad company But I forbear, I fear I have already asked more questions than the coroner will care to answer.
The Koad Was Purchased.
Wednesday was the day set aside for the Bpeciai road election in Franklin township when the question of tho pur chase of the Crawfordsville, Smartsburg & Eastern pike was submitted to the people. The election was a jumbled a'Tair at best and in many precincts the polls wero not opened. Only Ci» votes wore cast of which 4'J were in favor of the purchaso and 10 against it. Some ot the polls wero not opeqed as the citi zens were expecting all the paraphernalia incident to a regular election. In the road elections, however, all the red tape is not required.

Gus Landis. of the Dolphi Journal, visited the northern prison last week and writes it up, most of his article going to show how much more popular French is than Murpock. Among other things he says: "Warden French, who succeeded Murdock last spring, has made himself exceedingly popular with the convicts is a statoment that will not admit of question. 'It does 'not seem like t\ie sumo place it was before French took charge,' said Pettit, tho preacher convict. He t»ld how much bettor they were treated in every way. French's hobby is cleanliness, and if a prisoner wants to be hauled over the coals he net'd only get slovenly about his cell."

Republicans Hold Convention*. INDIANAPOLIS, lud., Jan. -J2.—The district conventions lor the election of state ccntral committeemen from the Fifth and Seventh districts were held here Thursday, Great interest was manifested In the result in this (the Seventh) district, where anti-ad-ministration talk is loudest. The convention was called to order at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon by SV. T. Durbin, district chairman, with 201 delegates. A contest of factions was precipitated by a motion by a known Harrison delegate for the appointment of a committee on credentials to settle the several contests in the various wards. A call for a yea and nay vote called out several heated speeches. The motion prevailed however, by a vote of 108 to 15. Harrison delegates were seated by the committee. The resolutions adopted closed with a call for President Harrison's reuoinination at Minneapolis in line. The convention burst out in loud and prolonged applause as the motion for adoption was put and carried without a dissenting vote. The election of committeeman followed, J.
W. lless, of this county, receiving 15U votes, and It. A. Black, of Hancock, 47.
In the Fifth district Jesse Overstreet, a Harrison man, was chosen committeeman. The resolutions urged the reuomination of President Harrison. J. C. Bellheimer was elected committeeman in the Second district, and the administration was indorsed. ..The Tenth district chose Charles Harley for committeeman, and indorsed President Harrison. In the Ninth C. C. Shirley was reelected committeeman, and the renomination of President Harrison was urged. Cieorge Osborn was made a member of the state central committee in the Eleventh district, and resolutions indorsing the administration were adopted. Made Money by Fulling*
GOSHEN. Ind.. Jan. 22.—The recent failure of Sargent & Smith, a retail grocery lirinof Elkhurt, proves to have been a fraud. Last Saturday two men went to a livery barn at Napanee and hired a team and sled. For some reason the stable keeper was suspicious. He followed them to a house on the outskirts of Elkhart, saw them at u.^htfall load up the sleigh with fancy groceries taken from tne cellar of the house through a trap door, turn the load over to another man, who started toward Napanee. About midway between the two towns the sled was unloaded in an old, unoccupied building, and then driven to Napanee. Bubcock informed the officers at Elkhart, who simply laughed at him. While in Elkhart, however, Mr. Iiabcock ran upon a Chicago grocer who had lost much by the failure and told him of the circumstance. They drove to the house in the country and secured the goods. Sargent & Smith had made arrangements for shipping the plunder to Ohio, but had taken alarm and flown, with the officers on tlieir track. While in business they sold goods at much below cost and it is thought that they have gotten away a great deal of cash.
Havoc CaiMetl bj a Mad Dog. SPENCEK, Ind Jan. 22.—Wednesday morning the hunting dog belonging to George Zinimerle, at Worthington, went mod and bit Frank McCusick, a boy residing with Mr. Zinimerle. That gentleman attempted to drive the dog away and was himself bitten. The dog ran into the street and bit several dogs before it was killed. Ziminerle and MeCusiek have gone to Terre Haute to have the madstone applied.
Fell Dead Whlln Building a Fire. CONXKHSVII.I.E, Ind., Jan. 22.—A. S. D. liall, an ex-sheriff, while making a fire Wednesday told his wife he felt a cold streak going down his throat toward his lung and fell over dead. He was 50 years old. About a month ago he dropped a S2,500 insurance in the odd fellows, and about a week ago the atfent offered to reinstate him for five dollars, but he refused.
