Tuum: in quite a wave of sentiment paHsing over tlio country, not confined to any political party, favoring the election of Senators by the people instead of by tho legislature as the constitution provides. Amending the constitution is a tedious and difficult process and ii is not likely that the friends of this idea will bo able to accomplish thoir purpose this year. Hut iu effect the plan ot the Democrats in Illinois is the same na a direct eloction of Senators by the people. At the Democratic State convention Gen. l'almer was named as their choice for Senator and tho party pledged to elect him if they had a majority of the legislature. Gen. Palmer made a uiviiFR of the Stale his own interest and being elejted the effect was the same as if the peoule hud chosen him directly.
10.—The
state auditor's office, through M, 13ul:e, chief of the insurum*o department, hns given out that the "Iudianu Farmers' JMH)1 Insurance Company of Khvood" 1,301 Is a fraud of great propor-
tioiiH. Several weeks npo Auditor Henderson began receiving letters of 05 inquiry about the company. An infl.2o vestigation was made, winch resulted in the company bcinjj blacklisted, and the prosecutor of Madison county was instructed to bring proceedings against the otiicers of the company. The latter part of last week
Mr. Duke received word from the Madison county prosecutor that the company had no oilices ut IClwood, and that he was unable to get any trace of the men who were practicing the fraud. Further investigation by Mr. Duke showed that the company had never been incorporated under the laws of Indiana, and that some one outside the state was evidently working the concern. On Monday Mr. Duke was put in possession of information which shows that the men who are operating the fraud reside in Chicago. The names of the swindlers were obtained, and a government post oflice inspector will be asked to arrest the men on the charge of using the mails for fraudulent purposes. The. company lias been doing a large business among the farmer?* of Indiana and ichigan.
